www.crosstraini... How to choose a hybrid rear knobby tyre if the super soft gummy tyres don't suit your riding. Gummy tyres! Ever used them? Should you use them? About 10 years ago everyone started talking about the incredibly soft rear knobby used by Graham Jarvis. The Goldentyre GT216X. Need hard enduro training? Work through our video lists. Many riders decided if Graham Jarvis was constantly winning hard enduros with this tyre then it must help them ride better too. Read about them in gummy tyre reviews. Of course then all the complaints started about this expensive gummy tyre only lasting one to three rides. Gummy tyres work best when you avoid wheelspin, so throttle jockeys complained a lot. And of course the soft rubber does wear out faster. Years ago I reviewed the incredibly soft GT216X. I avoided wheelspin. I only rode in technical terrain. And I still only got eight rides from the tyre. How to choose a hybrid knobby? I normally get about 50 rides with normal rear knobbies. Should you use a very soft gummy rear tyre? Probably not. These are ideal for riding over rocks, roots, rutted trails. It probably be no better than an normal knobby in everyday dirt riding. Hard enduro techniques are covered in our training vids. And it can be poor at speed due to all the flexing of knobs and the tyre carcass. And it can be terrible in mud. I remember being stranded at the bottom of a slippery clay climb while beginners got to the top. The super soft knobs kept flexing and not digging into the clay. Very embarrassing. There is good news though. There is a range of hybrid tyres that can last a long time and suit more dirt riders. Here are some examples. They are called hybrids because they use a combination of trials tyre features mixed with enduro features. First? Into enduro and dirt bikes? Check out our dirt bike videos. The rubber compound. Some manufacturers are using a semi-soft compounds to try and get more durability. Second? Extreme enduro training vids are our focus. The tyre carcass. Gummy tyres are usually lighter and have less ply so they wrap around the terrain, but they can tear easier and flex too much at speed. But hybrids often use a stiffer carcass with more ply to counter this. Third? The tread pattern. Some hybrids lean more toward a trials tyre pattern but with more ply and harder rubber. Others like the Motoz Arena use a motocross tread but with a soft flexible carcass. If you are enduro riding get into our enduro training vids. Our dirt riding tips are great for developing your hard enduro skills.
MOTOZ MOUNTAIN HYBRID: One of our top choices, the carcass is flexible, the knobs generous and the grip outstanding - has proven to be incredibly durable.
SHINKO 505 HYBRID CHEATER: Finds traction in the most extreme conditions-it’s almost like cheating! Strong in braking and loose soil conditions. Prefers dry, harder conditions.
SHINKO 525 HYBRID CHEATER: Shinko’s newest enduro/extreme, designed for soft/intermediate terrain.
SHINKO 216 MX SERIES ULTRA-SOFT REAR: Large lightweight and flexible carcass with an open tread design that clears out well in mud, strong grip in extreme terrain, DOT-approved.
DUNLOP GEOMAX AT81 EX: The AT81 enduro knobby but with ultra-grippy compounds added to the equation.
IRC VE33S GEKKOTA: A new gummy compound that doubles for riders looking for a little less knob flex than the standard Gekkota.
KENDA EQUILIBRIUM K787: The DOT-approved Equilibrium offers the best qualities of a trials tire and motocross tire all in one. It’s a super-sticky race compound for unbeatable grip in both wet and dry conditions.
KENDA IBEX K774: A very tall knob works well in looser terrain mixed with rocks with an appetite for gummy rock-crawling and hill-climbing.
MAXXIS MAXXCROSS EN: Tacky compound and a compliant carcass designed to grip the gnarly obstacles found on an EnduroCross track.
MITAS XT-454: Mid to soft terrain tire for Cross Country and Hard Enduro, excellent grip on wet roots and rocky terrain.

TRY LOWER AIR PRESSURE FIRST? Most guys in our group now use TUbliss. We usually run 2 to 4psi for our hard enduro rides and the traction is incredible - even with hard compount mx-style knobbies. Running the right air pressure can be as important as your tyre choice. Mousses? Remember using the right size for the tyre is important here as well. Short summary of gummy/hybrid knobbies that appears to be objective: MOTOZ MOUNTAIN HYBRID: One of our top choices, the carcass is flexible, the knobs generous and the grip outstanding - has proven to be incredibly durable. What's your opinion on the motoz s/t & i/t? I just ordered a set of 1.85-21 / 2.5-18 rims for my fattiboy (890 adv) I don't do any highway and rarely do much street riding unless it's to get to the trails (I'm aware of the irony of buying a highway focused offroader& not using it as such.) I have terrain of every kind around me - sand pits, dirt hard & loose, pavement & wet variants of each. I'm thinking of running an S/T front I/t rear.

Love the Shinko 525 Cheater for geneal purpose trail riding. Soft enough for non-pro-level technical stuff, big spaced knobs to clear mud. Has stiff enough sidewalls, decent wear.

Had that for awhile and it got me stuck in a few instances, ie one greasy hill that wasn’t really a hill and other spots which I’d thought wasn’t hard but I don’t as left there spinning, now on the golden tyre gt333 mus hard and never looked back. Plus the 525 was hard to put on and take off

I've honestly found the shinko 525 Cheater to be the best tyre I've ever run. In the past I've never even thought of what I wanted for a tyre. Didn't think it made much difference (generally speaking). But the shinko seemed to have the best of both worlds. With tubeliss its soft as, traction on everything including mud. Perhaps my riding control has improved, but I actually found it lasted longer than the mid compound tyres I was using before. That could be because I get up the hill in one go though....

I have the IBEX on both my Betas and maybe I'm the exception but they last very well for me. I ride rocks, mud, roots, hard pack, but try to to spin too much. I've had the same tire on for 2 years. One guy told me he hated the IBEX since he and his son lost all the knobs in less than 2 hours. Then he said they road at 40 to 50 mph on some old rocky fire roads. Well no wonder they didn't last! It's very much application specific and personal preference. If something works for you, then use it. The same tire may be garbage for the guy that rides the same trail with you.

I'm still on my Ibex. Some cracking around the knobs but nothing missing so far. 20h+ on this one. Slow speed, not much wheelspin. I think I might sell the bike before the tire is completely done.

I've been a Shinko guy for years. I recently started racing (hare scrambles) and felt I was loosing time from wheel spin and clogging. The tire is great and will still use for rocks and roots, but the 505 knob pattern is too tight for the amount of mud we see. Yes, I know the 525 is more open, but I decided to try the IRC JX8 gummy for the next race. I'll give an update after the race.

It's worth mentioning that correct pressure (mousse, tubeliss...etc setup) is critical to gummy/hybrid gummy performance as they work by conforming and "sticking" to terrain instead of digging like a regular knobby. Even the best gummy with 15 psi will only be good at leaving burnout marks on every rock :D I find that tires are really location/terrain specific, so it's worth asking the locals who ride similar terrain. Here on the east coast 140 width tires have become popular and the current hot tire for hard enduro racing is the Dunlop EN91EX (or Michelin Enduro Xtrem for those who can find/afford it) - you will see that on the back of most of the front of the pack. A big difference with those is the side knobs that stick of the side of the tire, which provide increased traction/support on sidehills. They last 1-2 events however, especially if rocks are involved. These are all in the $150 range in the US. Kenda Knarly and IRC JX8/IX09 are also popular from the budget side, and you'll occasionally see someone on a Dunlop AT81EX (was much more popular last year before EN91EX became more available) or Mitas. I ran the AT81EX at TKO last year and it works okay, especially at higher speeds, but the EN91EX is on another level. I'm speaking specifically to organized hard enduro racing here (BOG, Kairos, RORR...etc), as what one considers "hard enduro" trail riding is very subjective. The IRC JX8 is my personal favorite all around trail ride / practice tire for medium-hard terrain. The knobs are pretty big, well spaced, and the sidewalls are relatively stiff. Even on a well used soft mousse, I've done some faster races on it in Michigan sand and was impressed how well it handled at speed. It's not directional, so I flip them and run them until the knobs look like little pyramids. This tire is typically in the $100 range, about 50% cheaper than the top dogs. For trail riding, a lot of people around here prefer the IRC VE33s because it will easily get 40-50 hours, has huge knobs made of rubber that's a good compromise of stick and support, and the carcass is very supportive. It is not a true gummy however and not however provide enough traction when things get really gnarly and amount of pushing/dragging increases by 2x. This tire is also usually in the $100 range. I've tried the Shinko 505, 525, and the Kenda Ibex in the past and I think that gummy technology has moved on from what is implemented in that generation of tires. The VE33s, for example, is superior to all of them in the terrain around here.

I’ve tried a lot of the gummy tires other than the FIM stuff. Prefer taller lugs for bite and lasting longer. I actually really like the Ibex. I’ve probably run about 6 of them. Usually can get around 35 hours out of them as long as you don’t spin a lot. They will tear knobs if you do. They are one of the cheaper options and I like the tall knob height. The AT81EX is my favorite. Amazing traction and 35 hours with no tearing. The IX-09 and JX8 are on par with EX for traction but don’t last as long and aren’t as good in loose stuff. I like the Arena Hybrid Gummy but the price is too high in IMO. Not as much traction but lasts. The VE33S is similar IMO but 50% cheaper. The 505 cheater is ok. Good traction in the rocks but braking isn’t great. I hate the 525 cheater. Carcass is too stiff and doesn’t have the traction of the others and it doesn’t last. My least favorite of all the ones I’ve tried. I also tried the Mitas XT454 double green is a good tire and similar to the VE33S.

It's just debating semantics though, isn't it? In everyday language, truth is typically applied to things that aim to represent reality or otherwise correspond to it, such as beliefs, propositions, and declarative sentences. It gets really interesting the deeper you dig! Personally I think postmodernism can lead to too much scepticism and overturning all the things like reason, knowledge and 'truth' that come from the Enlightenment. Of course there's a healthy degree of scepticism, but I figure it's way too easy to throw out the baby with the bath water in our alleged 'post truth' era. We have been condemned to live in interesting times (as the Chinese curse goes!). My personal angle is that reviews tend to only hold some value if you get multiple opinions and especially ferret out the negative ones. Statistically it makes sense. I admit I did feel a bit uncomfortable with Dallas mainly presenting his opinion but he says all his customers for that summer really liked the traction. Plus I did my usual googling around to find lots of opinions which seemed to correlate well.
