When you travel from Washington to New York, let's say you can choose to either take the plane or the train. Buying a train ticket, so to say making the decision to travel by train, reduces your short term opportunities as you can not choose anymore your way of transportation (short term). But through the decision you are making your way to New York. Being in New York gives you new opportunities to do stuff in New York (mid/long term)
