The 2023 Linlithow Marches morning procession westwards along Linlithgow High Street on Tuesday 13th June 2023. The procession, led by Standard Bearers and Linlithgow Reed Band, were marching through the town from the Burgh Halls out past West Point as they made their way to the boundary at Linlithgow bridge.
Following the band were the Provost and members of the Court of the Deacons of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, carried in the horse drawn carriages. This is a voluntary organisation made up of male and female deacons from town organisations, other duly elected men and women members and all living past Provosts.
This is the beginning of a wonderful full day of marches and celebrations, an ancient tradition that starts with a series of early morning wakening marches through the Burgh.
Linlithgow is one of Scotland’s most ancient Burghs, having received a royal charter from King Robert II in 1389. This gave the town’s authorities the right to hold markets, claim revenue and administer the port of Blackness. A condition was an annual payment to the king - and the need to patrol the town’s properties and boundary every year - the origin of “The Marches".
