@Krashs I don't try to take his words out of context, nor do I strawman him. I just get razzed by his approach on how he presents his sponsors, it looks like the emotions in his demeanor turns to plastic and porcelain and his joints get slightly tighter, like there almost robotic, subtle but not enough to be obvious. ................................................................. I don't hate linus, however I do admit I get way to worked up by his sponsoring mode. ................................................................. I can't say that I'm comfortable nor supportive of what seems to be his new found shadow banning desire, it definitely feels like a form of censorship, like what are the boundaries, is criticism banned? or just hurtful speechs, but what is criticism, okay fine, then lets say its super obvious, like there's no criticism being aimed at a topic and its JUST hurtful words, then thats easier to accept. however I feel that shadow banning is somewhat of a slope, like it becomes easier and easier to a point where one might accidentally snap someone in the shadow realm of the hushed who was just voicing how he disagrees with something he said, and something to happen like not getting remorseful for accidentally snapping someone who didn't deserve getting shadow snapped opens the window of the possibility of maybe wanting to do it on purpose next time. ................................................................. what I'm also worried about is that I might get shadow banned for making this comment, because its like this, nobody likes ducktape being placed over there mouth, and shadow banning would definitely silence anyone who is hit by it, and if I get a target painted on me for having expressed criticism thats somewhat uncomfortable in the feels department, yeah, I would say I'm a little lot worried, I felt I must worry that any of my criticism that might come off as harsh, unpleasant or uncomfortable might eventually land me in the shadow realm of the hushed. but it seems like he reversed course on shadow banning, but I was definitely more worried and uncomfortable about posting my thoughts until seeing this time part 0:20 to 0:49 of this video, seeing that really did put me in a more comfortable state of mind, and am thankful he clarified that and more thankful I was able to discover this video that shows him clarifying it. anywho, live long in purpose and prosper in contentment.

5:37 The really greasy thing about the rise of the unboxing embargo is that NVIDIA altered the deal so that outlets like Gamers Nexus, who just don't do unboxings ever, couldn't repurpose it to be a teardown embargo. Because they were able to do that when the concept of an unboxing embargo first became a thing, but then tearing the card apart became part of the review embargo instead.

I really feel this. Far too many people start from a misconception and really dig in if you try to correct the misconception. Occasionally we're able to meet in the middle, but far too often things just keep getting hotter until one of us breaks off. The unfortunate flip side of this is discussion-fatigue. At some point you start expecting poorly thought out comments and lash out at people who don't deserve it. Now you're the guy doing exactly the thing you were so upset about. I've been on both sides of this (sorry anyone I've unintentionally lashed out at!) and it sucks. I really do think this is a challenge of internet communication. It's too impersonal at too large of a scale. The way we humans are designed to interact just doesn't work. I don't know what the solution is -- and I'm fairly certain there are no _easy_ solutions -- but I hope we figure it out at some point.

Wow I've never heard this feeling/observation put into words so well. I totally agree
@hybridtheory9938
@hybridtheory9938 Год назад
I think it ultimately boils down to there just isn't a code of conduct for online interaction because the internet was -- or maybe still is -- the wild west of discourse. Can you honestly go into a public space and scream something like "I WANT TO RAPE THE LITTLE GIRL ON "SPY FAMILY"" out loud and expect people to just be fine with it? No, you wouldn't. You also wouldn't intrude on a conversation somebody is having with their friends or co-workers yet nothing is stopping you from doing so online. I think there isn't something we can do to fix that online discourse, but we can change how we as individuals respond to it. For example, I decided to just put my thoughts out there and if anybody feels the need to tell me how wrong I am or how dumb I am I will not engage. If they take that as a "win", I just shrug and go, "All right, you get nothing for that win that I wasn't even competing for but good for you I guess." And if I want to engage, it's because I am getting something out of it. Another example, I want to feel like my feedback in games is being heard, so I post on a Steam page made by the developers and I respond to the developers and only them. If anybody else besides the developer responds to my feedback, I purposely ignore them because that feedback was not meant for them, it was meant for somebody else. Going back to that point earlier about somebody intruding on a conversation with a friend or coworker: yes, the forum is a "public place" but so is a food court at a mall but I don't see anybody getting into heated discussions with strangers after passing by. The same attitude is applied on that Steam page example, only now I have the added benefit of not having that person in my space. I know this doesn't help Linus, but maybe for somebody like yourself going through discussion fatigue, it helps knowing that at the end of the day not only is that person refusing to meet you at the table not worth your time but they can easily go back to being nonexistent again very easily just by doing nothing.

Either don't feed the trolls or you feed them so hard they explode and everyone can see they were full of shit. Of course not everyone has the time or the patience to do so. And really, Linus' biggest mistake was publicly announcing he was shadowbanning people. When there's a stream going on there's not much else you can do if they're shitting up the chat. Despite his biases and shortcomings I overall trust Linus' judgement to ban the actual trolls vs those just disagreeing with him.

I do wish the LMG titles were a bit more closely related to the videos though, if for no other reason than the number of times I've shared a video with my friends which talks about something I think they'll find interesting but the title makes it seem like something completely different. For example, just the other day I shared the video talking about different Windows power tools with the group (cos we'd talked about PowerToys a few weeks before) but I got ribbed for sharing a "Windows is great" video (as somebody who's been highly critical of their dismissal of Windows in the past) without actually watching it. And if you've seen the ones from Hardware Unboxed and Gamers Nexus, you kind of know enough for a purchase decision. Those two have kind of established themselves as in-depth channels. And watching those two videos probably took 45 minutes😅. Only if you intend to buy a product, you'll watch more reviews because of the built-up enthusiasm. And GPU's aren't selling well these days. The Short Circuit video was a great idea because no other channel is releasing a similar video on the same day, and LTT will probably release that type of video faster than other channels.

Personally I think the people who don't add any value to the community who are also just being downright offensive should be shadow banned. The people whose sole purpose is to offend the creator when they can just as easily click off the video and move on with their day, they're the ones who don't deserve the attention from the rest of the community. The other way to look at this is that when people are offensive, abusive, rude etc, the backlash and harassment they get from the hard-core viewer can be quite brutal. They get attacked to the point where it could cause problems for them as a person and be construed as cyber bullying. Those are the people who need to just be banned. No questions asked, just hit that button and move on with your day

The only way to manage a community like youtube (coming from my experience with game dev, where again you have a huge number of people with incredably critical negative opinions that you arent allowed to respond to) is to actively moderate and be tough about it. Every person with an overly rude post that goes unmoderated is an example to the thousands of people that sees their post, that that kind of content is ok here. And then it gets worse and worse. You feel mean doing it, and with a small community a manager can go around warning and reminding people to keep it civil, but in large audiences you just gotta hit the nuke button and cull people the second they step over a pretty fucking restrictive line. Temporary bans (with an automated warning to the user) is probably the most fair way to do it on youtube, if that is even possible.

@@alainportant6412 It's like playing with wildfire. Look at litterally any bad game launch, and look at the way people talk about the communications from the community moderator. If people are upset, they will find and focus on the perceived negative parts of your response. Even if you have a flawless, accurate and well meaning response, it will still be received negatively. Negative sentiment in the community is like a tidal wave, once enough of it starts moving, they take the whole community along for the ride. I've worked for studios in the past that have really positive communities, where completely out of the blue one day a few core members of a discord decide that they dont like your historical record at fixing bugs, and now for 2 weeks you have your whole discord up in arms. If you defend, you're just trying to cover your ass. If you promise updates and fixes, you're lieing. If you actually push out patches (and they miraculessly are bug free dispite the rush) you will be acused of not trying hard enough. When communities get worked up about stuff, they as a singular entity, cannot be reasoned with. Its a scary force of nature. Best left to calm down.

I really like that rule about not making your audience the butt of the joke (ok that's not exactly the rule as read but it's the example you used). Not making categories of people the butt of the joke (though making fun of individual people [eg Bezos] is different) is like THE one big step for inclusive content, and what certain ageing comedians (you know the ones I'm talking about) don't realise is the reason nobody wants to watch their stuff anymore. If you can get your point across without making a category of people the butt of the joke, your content is almost always going to be better. Sorry this ramble probably wasn't very clear, but I hope you get the general gist of what I'm saying at least and that it's supportive of your stance ❤

i have a problem with you using comedians as an example though. Comedians... or atleast a good edgy comedian shall we say, should make a joke about everyone. If a comedian is making constant jokes about everyone then it shows they have a problem. But if a comedian is making jokes out of everyone then its clear they are pointing flaws at all people not a certain set of people. Jimmy Carr is a great example. He takes the piss out of everyone, everyone is fair game. Comedy is comedy for a reason, everyone has different styles and tastes. Just becuase you dont like a certain taste thats not the comedians problem thats your problem, you go watch a different comedian. i will watch mine. Comedy is like art, its subjective. 30 years ago almost every comedian would never have a job if they worked in the present day. Comedy should be taken lightly becuase its just comedy. Everyone can be offended at any kind of joke and if we shout out at comedians becuase everyone takes offense comedy would be and is a dying art.

@@ashleygoggs5679 The reason I said "certain ageing comedians" is because there's a certain subset of comedians who were popular 1-3 decades ago whose main act was "Look at this minority group. Aren't they so weird? That's funny!" These same comedians are complaining now that the "woke police" have come after them just because modern audiences don't find them funny anymore. Because we live in a more tolerant society where "somebody is different" isn't actually a punchline, it's just a thing. It's lazy comedy and people are turning away from it because it's lazy and boring. It's harder to make a joke that doesn't lean on those lazy topics, but the jokes you make when you put that effort in are, generally speaking, just better jokes!

@@Respectable_Username actually thats not correct at all. If you dont like it thats fair enough. Comedians just dont like being told what is and isnt funny. Everyone has their own tastes. For you tp say x comedian isnt funny, and yet i find him hilarious thats dosnt make them a bad comedian it makes them a comedian thag dosnt fit your taste. Its literally as simple as that. Just because you dont like their style or what they say dosnt give you a right to shut a comedian down and ruin my entertainment. I'm a designer, and have worked for companies with 3k+ employees in very senior roles, and you'll never quite get used to the criticism and challenges when you know its wrong, evidentially so. I've had situations where we split tested things against me and my teams judgement, theirs lost (badly, like £50k+ revenue a DAY badly) but we still went with it because it was their want and they "felt" it was better. A lot of people won't change their mind just because facts are presented sadly, and the skill is learning to just mentally go "yeah alright whatever" when it's ultimately not going to effect you or the people you care about. You have to learn to pick your battles and on which hill die on if purely for your own mental health. Very much easier said than do though i know.

I'm an Industrial Quality Analyst. That screwdriver guy, good grief. We have a really bad habit societally of buying the cheapest crap possible instead of spending a little more on something that will last and serve you well, but come on dude. Maybe in 50 to 100 years when our manufacturing abilities improve significantly, we can make LTT screwdrivers for $10, but not now even in your dreams. But to everyone else, I HIGHLY encourage you to spend a little extra on stuff when you can, treat it like an investment. Buy the $40 Japanese gooseneck kettle instead of the $20 Chinese one. The $70 screwdriver instead of the $10 one. $150 PSU instead of the $50 one. It will save you money in the long run. President Jeanne Perreault of Rivier College said before, "We cannot afford to purchase equipment and buildings at the lowest price. We have to be careful." Remember that, you cannot afford the cheapest price.
@iroccata
@iroccata Год назад
I'm an Industrial Engineer and would agree up to certain point. Of course buying the cheapest most of the time will mean bad quality, but how high should you go in price and still have gains? I believe that LTT scrwedriver is an overkill and would never recommend someone spend that much money on that screwdriver, because there are many good brands at 1/3 of the cost that will exceed what people need on a screwdriver. It depends what you are looking for.... do you need a car because you need to go to point A to point B? You shouldn't buy the cheapest, but you clearly don't need a Ferrari. I'm not saying LTT screwdriver shouldn't exist, but is it worth paying for most of us? I don't think so, just the same as Ferraris.

I actually didn’t know the screwdrivers were made locally. My only issue with them is the price is in USD when it’s Canadian manufacturing and you are based in Canada. Why charge Canadians USD pricing? It’s a HUGE deterrent for supporting local. If I’m going to spend $100 CAD on a tool, it’s going to be something that I trust and has a warranty that I know will always be honoured. I’d rather support float plane than pay $100 for a screwdriver.

Short story: Linus shouldn’t go down the shadow-banning rabbit-hole. Long story: there totally should be shadow banning, but Linus can’t be the sole arbiter of who or who isn’t making bad faith commentary. He should create a team dedicated to shadow-banning bad faith actors so nobody’s individual ego gets in the way, and give that team a ruleset that they can objectively set out on their mission of identifying bad faith comments and shadow-ban the poster… We’ll want to share those rules of good faith discourse publicly of course because the entire LTT fan base can’t just ‘trust me bro’ that you’re not being arbitrary in your enforcement…. Do you see where I’m going here?? Edit: I’m saying Linus is going to more and more face himself with the exact same challenges as Twitter that nobody can solve. The rules would then be broken, then you’d add ambiguity to fight that or invest all that in a broken system. Why did you people read my long story and think ‘what’s the prob bro’ - how did that strike you as an easy thing to just do in a business?

I think you got it a bit backwards, Linus. The audience _is_ to blame but not for what you said. Their short attention span is their fault. The fact that they will rush out to buy something day one without knowing anything about it and thus demand reviews be made ahead of time--is also their fault. But the algorithm makes things like this even worse. By appealing to the lowest of the lows, the absolute most worthless opinions (IE: the masses) everyone else suffers. Content gets more rushed (to meet faster and faster deadlines), more controversial (to stir up more drama and views) and more clickbaity. All to get those sweet, sweet views. This turns away good viewers, or worse, mutates them into bad ones. The explanation is that we live in a world where the customer doesn't matter anymore. The only one who matters is the braid dead zombie masses. They may not even _buy_ a product. But they click on stuff and clicks earn money. So RU-vid promotes and brutally *enforces* the idea of appealing to the groaning walking dead we call modern humans. Humans may be bad, but we're making them worse than they need to be. We no longer need or want to think for ourselves. The corporations have infected our society and we can't stop the hoards from rushing the gates every time fresh blood appears. Giving in is our fault as well, but the issue is the overwhelming odds and the distinct lack of flamethrowers to **ah hem** address the problem.

The best "shadowbanning" I've seen in the wild was in a forum. Before a comment was made public, an algorithm checked the sentiment. If it was bad or spam, the user had to solve a captcha. But now the important part: The probability of the site refusing the captcha solution was proportional to the probability that the comment was nasty, and had nothing to do with the actual solution. This lead to trolls getting incredibly frustrated over time and at some point gave up.

Once you realize it's a bad faith argument...it's best to disengage. I'd argue the majority of people on the internet have no idea what they're talking about & a good chunk of those people just want to "win" the argument with no concept of being objective or hearing the opposing side (or the actual facts) whatsoever. It reminds me of years ago when I (a datacenter engineer that's been working in IT for 20+ years) got into argument in a Facebook group with an unemployed streamer whom never worked in IT that just streamed from his parent's basement about the hardware requirements a person would need to stream PC games from the 90s. Coincidentally, JayzTwoCents made a video echoing the same sentiments about most people not knowing what they're talking about yet are embarrassingly arrogant on online forums around that time too.
