Linux in your pocket / SQFMI Beepy

This is a tiny computer that fits in the palm of your hand. A pocketable cyberdeck. The full power of linux. Hackable. Tactile. Simple. Featuring a very unique reflective memory lcd, a physical keyboard and powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero. This is Beepy by SQFMI. Very useful as a portable pen-testing tool or for SSH'ing in to a server for some quick maintenance. It suffers from one huge flaw though.

wow, a lot of hate for this in the comments… It’s a nice piece of quirky tech - a few people buying this to play around with is hardly generating ewaste, especially when the keyboard is repurposed from a blackberry and you could use the pi in other projects if you no longer want to use it with this. I talk to my friends through matrix so this paired with a terminal matrix client could be neat for when I’m not at my computer.

Since you're one of the top comments I need to cling on and ask, whats up with the comments? Sorted by new they are all strange and about random geopolitical events or wars. whats up with that? I just wanted to know what the song that played at 0:00 was.

the issue is it has to beat an old android phone and a bluetooth/usb otg keyboard which IMHO, it doesn't, postmarketOS makes a lot of older powerful devices go a long way, only issue is the lack of mainline kernel support for a lot of phones, but you can even tape a zero style SBC to the back of it and ssh in from the phone, works great and costs very little in comparison, I get about 36 hours on a single charge with a battery bank, and all it cost was stuff I had lying around my apartment and an OTG adapter. I'd rather see investment in postmarketOS and the like than vaporware like these things, they're fine as a niche but it really doesn't solve anything that can't be done with a bit of patience and time invested

It would be really cool to see a version of this (or a competing product) that uses the keyboard, form factor, and square aspect ratio of the Blackberry passport. As many software problems as that phone had, the keyboard and text-centric form factor made it one of my favorite mobile device experiences to date, and taking those elements from it and using them in a Linux pocket computer like this one would be an instant purchase for me (provided it didn't share the few crippling issues this device has).

My 6 year old Garmin fenix has a colour memory-in-pixel display, and they didn't have any trouble implementing a backlight.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 10 дней назад
Well the problem is that a small operation like this can't order a custom display module from Sharp, and the back of these is silvered, it doesn't have a removable lightbox. Besides not all memory LCD types can even fundamentally be converted to backlight. Frontlight is perhaps an option.
@PaulSpades
@PaulSpades 9 дней назад

I know I would have to resist to buy a device like this one because I already know I would stop using it after a few weeks but I love the nostalgia vibe it brings to me when I was discovering Linux (2.0 at that time I think). Maybe it's due to the colorless terminal or the simplicity of the device :)

Debian 2.0 came out in '98. Are you referring to just the kernel? No specific distro? I bought the Debian CD form a vendor's desk(imagine that!) because it could boot up, before (and for many distros after) you had to boot from 3.5 floppy, and copy files to hard drive. I love the OPTION of a monochrome terminal, but as a daily driver? ugh

I have a SQFMI watchy and have found the company frustrating to deal with as a maker. Questionable documentation, the first version being more a beta with broken features, then afterwards opaque hardware versioning that effects how you program for it, etc. It's cool to see the playdate screen in something else, but I would never trust that hardware manufacturer to come up with something wholly functional.

They sound a lot like many Linux software projects in the 00s: hobbyists just doing their thing, not realising how much extra responsibility and workload comes with making their work public. I guess the use of a Pi could be taken as a yellow flag (if not a red flag); Pis have never been the most open or best value hardware and it's worth shopping for other options.
@squirlmy
@squirlmy 12 дней назад
@@eekee6034 best value? What are you comparing to? Libre boards have been more "open", but more expensive, Orange Pi zero and Geniatech zero might be alternatives, but where else, for less, are you going to source wholesale numbers of boards? The only options for an entire computer are cheap China products, and you won't find better quality there. For a niche project like this you're talking nonsense. And China chip-makers are going bankrupt in the thousands, so expect even less alternatives in the future.
@eekee6034
@eekee6034 8 дней назад
@@squirlmy Well, to be honest, it's old info. Sometimes I forget how old my memories are. The Pi 4 was the first good Pi, there were plenty better alternatives before it, especially when the first Pi launched. I didn't know how many chip-makers are going bankrupt, so maybe it's a good thing the Pi range is so popular. As for wholesale though, it was buying retail which was harder before the Pi. Some parts seemed to be only available singly in expensive dev kits, though that was starting to change.
