@Donald J Can't the same thing be achieved with virtual machines for free, and without needing to use a crapbook? If you have a nice, powerful computer, you can have a nice, powerful virtual machine. Not only that, but you can run a Linux distro as the main OS and then run Windows or your preferred OS on the virtual machine. That way, neither Windows, Apple, nor Google can steal any data that isn't on your virtual machine. Another benefit is that you can have as many virtual machines for as many uses you need so all the data is stored separately from eachother. This way, you could use your physical computer for anything private/secure, and if you want to travel to any dangerous websites you can use a VM. Also, it's really not porn they're interested in. If they wanted porn, they could just visit the same sites their viruses are on. Hell, with a VM you could even download one of their viruses and get rid of it by deleting the VM. It's a completely self-contained virtual environment. Doesn't let anything affect your physical computer.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, and maybe I have missed it in the video but I am going to say this here: *ONE IMPORTANT THING AFTER INSTALLING* (in xfce at least) *:* Got to synaptic package manager (synaptic-pkexec) -> settings -> preferences choose "concider recommended packages as dependencies" and tick it. When installing packages now, there will be a notification saying "requires the installation of … packages" In many cases, newly installed applications in linux mint (and maybe even other OS from the ubuntu derivatives) don't work because some necessary libraries aren't installed. _For anyone trying out linux mint, I strongly recommend changing this preference before installing anything, as it fixes many problems like "app doesn't even start"._

No doubt Windows 10 had a hand in helping Linux become more popular. I'm still on Windows 7 and I'm looking around to see if a Linux distribution can do the job someday for me when it's finally time to ditch Windows 7. I'd be OK with Mint if it weren't for the sketchy Wine game compatibility that still plagues it these days. I haven't tried Wine but I can't just delete Windows and see if Linux + Wine works and later find out it's not for me and have to go back to Windows. And how's trying Linux and Wine on a VM? Like there would be Game > Wine > Linux > VMware > Windows layers already, not counting drivers sandwiched between some layers.

Linux could of taken off earlier. I feel we had a missed opportunity to take more share of the Desktop world when Windows Vista launched and fell on its face. We had Ubuntu looking really good, with compiz and all the great effects, looking nice and polished. But no marketing... Now Ubuntu has taken a plunge and Mint 19 is looking really good to pull new users. Great video by the way.

@@ronch550 I would recommend Manjaro for gamers, there is a good reason its leading the Distrowatch charts for quite some time now... Yes, yes, thats not indicative, yadda, yadda, nevertheless its undeniably popular, and rightfully so. As for parallel OS'es, you can just resize your Windows partition and dualboot until youve moved in your junk and set up shop. And sure, you can run Linux in a VM ofc, alltho Virtualbox handles gaming rather poorly(only allows you to allocate a whooping 128mb of vram for 64bit Linux). I havent really bothered to try VMWare yet, but i allso really dont think its much of a difference(the other way around makes alot more sense, see below). Allso, keep in mind that allmost every Linux distro comes as live media theese days, so generally "testing" them shouldnt be an issue. The good news is, theres allso KVM(Kernel VM) which is capable of PCIE passthrough, and offers full feature, near real-hardware performance. Off the top of my head id only know how to set up a Windows VM that way if it had its own dedicated grafics card available, with which Windows can do whatever it wants, but im confident you could "somehow" get it to work with just one(well lets say maybe. :p dualboot is still an option if everything else fails).

My hobby is making my own personal computer. I also bought second-hand computers cheaply and are installing various OS and playing. I am fiddling with three desktop computers and five laptops. Today I installed Linux Mint on two desktop computers and four laptops. One for accounting is Windows 10, but all seven have changed to Linux Mint OS. It became Linux from the old Core 2 CPU to the latest Xeon. I was surprised that it will work comfortably even with Core 2 CPU 10 years ago. Of course the latest CPU is tremendous speed. In personal use, Windows is not necessary anymore. I use personal computers to gather information on the Internet, e-mail, watch DVD movies, listen to jazz and classic music in a PC audio environment, and watch RU-vid videos. Linux Mint meets every individual needs. There are also many free software, and it seems to be able to cope with new hobbies. A particularly nice thing is that the developers of Linux mint made a wonderful OS. It is a good design and easy to use. And that is free so it is very appreciated.Since the graphics card is made by nvidia, nvidia graphic driver can be used and it is comfortable. 4K video can also be seen easily. I recommend Linux mint.

I decided that I was done with Windows last year, for a number of reasons. (Ads, privacy concerns, constant updates interfering with my use of the computer, etc.) I've been using Linux Mint 18.3 (and other iterations) since then, and I'm happy. I realized that I've gotten away from gaming and I haven't really had an application within the last few years that has 'needed' Windows. It's been a great experience. I haven't updated to Mint 19, simply because Mint 18 works and there's no reason to update. I haven't had a single point in recent time where I've wanted to go back. I remember the old days of Linux where I'd try it out and it just wasn't good enough for daily use. (Back in the 2.6 kernel and previous.) The applications were simple, the UI was ugly and sometimes didn't work right, or the functions I wanted weren't available. Now, Linux is just as good as Windows in some respects, and often better in others.

Congratulations PVD! It is good to hear that it works out well for you. I hear many people complaint about Windows for all of its known problems (I have an extensive list myself :)) but most people don't do anything about it. You improved your desktop experience. I myself dual boot because I like to play games but soon it won't even be necesary to do that anymore for most users. There is a trick to run Windows in a virtual machine alone so that you can still use all Windows software but without dual booting, in the next years it will become possible to runs most games in Steam without using anything of Windows. Google for Steam Play Proton in the news section to find out more. Basically they automatically translate DX11 to Vulkan and use Wine, the user only has to click on install and the developer and Valve take care of the rest. Cool. :) I had the same experience as you, I started to use LInux in the late 00's but it just wasn't good enough yet. Too many issues with sound-hardware. Now most of these issues have been solved and my sound even works better in some Linux distros than in Windows, my internet immediately works while in Windows I have to first download and install a driver for my ethernet card (brilliant, Microsoft :')), with my electrical piano I can immediately record while in Windows I need to install a proprietary driver from Yamaha (for the MIDI interface). Also my mechanical keyboard (Corsair Strafe) and gaming mouse immediately work. If I want to use LaTeX (used for most professional publications, probably Christopher uses or used it too given his academic background), in Linux it takes me around 1 minute to set it up, in Windows it takes fifteen minutes to set it up and it is more complicated (if you do anyhing wrong it won't work, in Linux you simply click on install).

I run my Linux desktop on a 240GB SSD. Most of my media is on a NAS, so I don't really need a lot of storage locally. I do still have an old SSD that has Windows 8.1 if I ever do have a need for it and I have an old system that has Windows 10 on it to keep my knowledge relevant, but that hasn't even been plugged in for like 3-4 months. (I'm still a few major updates behind.) The only thing I have to troubleshoot is hardware video acceleration. I have a GTX 1070 running on an FX 8350, so I should be able to watch a video at 1080p on RU-vid (fullscreen) without stuttering. It does that sometimes.
@peterjansen4826
@peterjansen4826 5 лет назад
Yes, the lack of hardware-acceleration in browsers in Linux is quite annoying. The same probleme here! My CPU can handle it fine (i5-750 with 3.3 GHz boost) but it still is annoying because it is much better to let the GPU handle this. A GPU has a few thousand processors and that is ideal for video-transcoding because that way you can keep the clock frequency and the voltage very low. On the GPU you would get a 3% load on average while on the CPU you get 20% load for a simple 1080p video. Only I prefer to have 1440p or higher because it highy improves the sound quality on RU-vid because RU-vid compresses the sound even more agressively on lower resolutions (112 kbps for 1080p, 128 kbps for 1440p, it is ridiculous given the tiny amount of data that is shaved off compared to the data for the video!). Anyway, I would like to see browsers just support hardware acceleration, in Windows this has been a thing for at least 10 years, in this regard Linux is running far behind and that is a shame given how much better it is in many other regards. Do you have any advice on how to get the hardware-acceleration to run in the browser? I myself have a AMD-card and my next card will also be an AMD card. It has to do with keeping some competition alive, GPP, Gameworks and PhysX (all anti-competition behavior which I disapprove of).

A few notes for those making the switch: 1) Most Linux users in fact never have to do the command line. Sometimes, it is just easier to do it that way because someone can say for you to type the magic incantation: sudo thing stuff something and you can just type it. Try explaining in an email where to click to do something with the GUI and you will see the issue quickly. 2) Some people new to Linux keep thinking "I want to run word" rather than "I want to make a nice document". It is a habit that works against you. Remember that you don't Toyota your way to work. 3) Many Linux systems want only one click on an icon when Windows wants two. This is often the hardest thing to actually get over in the switch. It takes some people as long as a few hours to stop double clicking. Don't get upset with your self if that happens to you. 4) If you want to tinker around with making your own software, unlike other OS's, there is no cost of entry. The best tools for the job are the ones you can get for free or come with the system. 5) Because "wine" is on most modern Linux systems, you can run all well written Windows programs. The biggest catch is that Linux is a lot more careful about not letting programs meddle with stuff they haven't asked to access. Things that Windows will let slide will cause Linux to kill the program for breaking the rules. The upside is that it means a Windows program can't make a total mess of your computer by fiddling stuff it is not supposed to.

I found this distribution of Linux a few weeks ago & decided to give it a try on my old machine. I'm glad I did. It indeed has a bit more learning curve than a new distribution of Windows but nothing insurmountable with a little effort. I had looked at & tried several Linux distro's but nothing seem to work right for me until I found Linux Mint 19. It reminds me of a good clean install of good old "XP" with no bloatware. NZ never had the equivalent of BBC OU shows. I was fascinated by them when I came to the UK in the 1990s. I remember watching them, but don't remember ever coming across anything that was *completely* unfamiliar or un-understandable. They were a great example of the original intention of the BBC charter. I should also say that in my teens I read every anthology of Isaac Asimov's science essays I could find (published from the 1950s to 1980s) which fed my worldview and knowledge. RU-vid channels like this and many others keep both those streams of learning alive, much to my pleasure.

@@andrewdupuis1151 I hate Windows? LOL I've been using it since Win 95 and I loved it until Win 8. MS dramatically failed and continues to fail at seeing what their consumers want since Win 8. No one wants touch interface on their desktop. No one wants metro apps. We just want good old Windows. The whole concept of continuum died when MS killed the phones. There's no point that Win 10 has "touch friendly" interface now. You can't customize Win 10 properly. You can't change the settings of Win 10 properly. MS just treated their users like they're braindead people. Also Win 10 does have spyware (incl. a keylogger!). Check the privacy settings. It can basically log everything you do on the computer and then send it to MS. You can't even completely turn it off if you don't have group policy editor.

Thanks very much. This single video did more to demystify Linux for me than anything else I've ever read or viewed. Very well done. It prompted me to create a bootable USB flash drive and fiddle around with the live Linux Mint media for awhile. (I didn't actually install it.) I looked at the LibreOffice apps, experimented with playing music and videos, browsed the internet, and fooled around with various settings. I might be getting my daughter's old laptop that she's replacing soon, and I'm think of installing Mint on it for further exploration. I appreciate your straightforward, non-judgmental approach to the subject. It seems to me that Linux's many strident online evangelists are the operating system's greatest deterrent to wider adoption. I don't like being told I'm an idiot or a sheep for not already using it - or that the transition from Windows 10 is obvious and simple, when common sense (and forty years experience using computers) tells me otherwise.

I switched to Linux when Windows 8 was released, because I refused to accept the terrible UI it had. I never looked back. Having used quite a number of distros myself, Linux Mint is my favorite. I'm a casual gamer, so Linux works great for me as a gaming OS too. Especially as Steam has native Linux support, and they've released their Windows compatibility system too now, which seems to work reasonable well for games without native Linux support. (Just for the record, I mostly play Cities: Skylines, though 40 of my 60 games on Steam are Linux compatible) But yeah. I used to make fun of Linux and Linux users. One of my friends is a Linux user and I used every opportunity I had to tell him how crap Linux was compared to Windows. Boy was I wrong, and I'm so ashamed of what I said now... I've definitively learned to never to say something sucks before I've tried it myself!

+1 for enjoying Cities: Skylines on native Linux Mint 19.1. I just bought the Industries DLC and after playing a near ten-hour session that Linux (with the Nvidia driver update) runs C:S a lot better than the Mac OS did. Before I installed Linux on my near-five-year-old machine I was about to give it to my folks as I had become more disgusted with the macOS and Apple’s practices, and though I bought a full version of Windows 10 Pro (a $200 USB stick), I did NOT want to install it. My iMac, a $2,300 machine, was collecting dust since I graduated from college until I accidentally corrupted my Mac recovery partition experimenting with Linux. Despite a Windows game or two having audio or video problems and having to live without my iTunes library on the desktop, I haven’t regretted it since.

I've been using Linux Mint for several years now currently version 18.3. My Lenovo X230 laptop originally had Windows 7 installed but I got fed up in particular with the nightmare which was Windows update which took forever and often had to be repeated on several occasions at the most annoying and inconvenient times always involving a reboot! In the end it was just taking up space on my SSD so I deleted Windows permanently and have never regretted it. Linux Mint is so intuitive and functional now that my wife and daughters and even my elderly mother all now use Linux Mint. I can do everything I need to do with opensource software and there are many options which are cross platform and available routinely for Linux like VLC media player, OpenOffice or LIbreOffice, Thunderbird, GIMP, etc. One thing I was particularly pleased about was learning how to use DVDStyler to encode DVD disks complete with motion thumbnail menus for films. Although I am not super good at the command line or terminal I am able to use it when needed for instance to run NordVPN if I want to be very secure for any reason. The great thing about FOSS is that usually there is an abundance of help online via Google to help solve any problems or issues which arise as someone else has always seen the same issue before! Thank you for posting and encouraging ordinary PC users to use the amazing and free opensource software which is Linux Mint.

Hi, I think you did a very nice job of explaining Linux Mint to the newer windows users who are willing to give it a try. Also as you covered, but I will restate it you CAN use both Windows and Linux mint on the same computer, even on the same drive. Just Dual-Boot when installing it (if in doubt there are many videos on youtube showing how to) and then when it first boots up it will ask which way you want to go. So yes you can have your cake and eat it too. LOL. I have been using Linux mint for some time now and I have to say that the Linux Mint community is getting closer and closer to the Windows experience WITHOUT the Windows hassle. The auto-update feature is great and better then windows because it isn't asking you to reboot every 5 minutes and works much more seamlessly then Windows does. The "Time shift" was in fact developed for windows users so that like windows if something gets messed up you can just go back a bit reinstall to that period and your back in business. Also less hassle with anti virus programs. Can Linus mint get a virus - yes, but far less likely then windows - also if you noted in this video YOU have to approve everything you put onto you hard drive with a password!

Really good stuff from Chris(as usual), as a long time Linux user there are just a couple of points I would feel are worth adding to this basic over view. First, there are many flavors of Linux so a new user from the pc world might ask "why Mint" well it's about the same thing you like with other things, "dependability, stability and so forth", some Linux flavors, Mate and Manjaro for example will have more bleeding edge updates, but they are also managed differently, they do something called "rolling updates" which CAN have some bad tendencies like bricking your machine. Mint doesn't do that and that's another reason we love it. Secondly for Windows users start getting used to the term "Wine", you may soon find a large number of programs familiar to you that run in a Linux program(Wine) and while not all are easy to get installed and running, your's might be! That's it, happy Linux computing.

Then just for fun I installed Chromium / Chromebook with less than OK results. Since it didn't take advantage of the installed hardware it was very slow. I did learn a lot but realized my laptop was too powerful for Chromebook which doesn't make functional use of the installed hardware. Then just before Christmas I installed Linux Mint and WOW!! The first thing I noticed was that the sound was louder and the display was far more crisp! And with the SSD and the streamlined OS this old laptop is rather fast. 18 seconds to boot up and only 6 to shutdown. HAPPY am I!

Really an outstanding instructional video - many thanks for sharing! Like me, many viewers will give this distro a try only because of your clear step-by-step guidance.

Installed Mint Cinnamon - Tricia after seeing this video. First distro I've installed in a decade or more. Thanks, as others have said, for the no muss no fuss guide. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos. Subscribed.

Been using couple of debian based distros before. Just tried cinnamon mint on a chromebook out of pure curiousity and man, this distro is slick! Spent like an hour playing with themes, shortcuts and UI elements. No wonder people like it so much.

Pro tip: While installing Mint or Ubuntu alongside Windows, first shrink any drive (for eg. C:/) on Windows by creating a 20+ gb unformatted partition. Restart your PC, boot to Linux live cd, click on the first option in Linux installation (Install Ubuntu/Mint alongside Windows). It will automatically select the unformatted partition you created earlier and start installing Linux. You just have to sit there. No need to create root/boot/swap partitions or dragging the existing ones.

Another great video. I’m currently downloading Mint as I type. Once you get the Linux bug it’s hard to go back to Windows. Only problem is it doesn’t take long to develop a condition called disto-hopping 😂

Thank you so much! I just had a look at your video this morning to see if I like the looks of it, but you made it look so easy that I went straight ahead and installed mint on my laptop, and now I finally have an OS i actually like. (seriously, screw windows 10,it felt like someone else was owning my laptop, installing stuff all the time -.-) Now i got mint fully setup and customized and everything is working smoothly. So much freedom, i can and will have a smiley as start menu button :3 Thank you!

Thanks Chris for explaining how to install linux. Your explanation and teaching manner are first class and I was able to create a bootable usb to install on a msi u130 which had windows 7 starter on. It now runs faster and works better.
