I've used Cinnamon for years and love it! I've used Linux since Slackware 1.0, which installed from 18 floppies. The panel config is the thing I enjoy the most, of all the distros this has to be the best panel app! Mint has detected every device on my desktop and my HP15 laptop.
I put Linux Mint Cinnamon onto my aged brother's 10Gen i5 laptop which has 8GB RAM and it runs beautifully. He's very happy with it. I've also used Mint XFCE on a 2008 Dell Core2 duo laptop with 2GB RAM and it was just fine. Of course I put SSDs in both machines as no one has time to wait for old HDDs to spin up.
Great information as always. As an aside note for info: If anyone puts LM Cinnamon on an old Surface Pro 3, the touch screen works fine, but I would still use an USB mouse for the installation. Just in case!
I'm a senior and long time Windows user (started with DOS and CPM). I just installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.3 in my recently acquired Lenovo M920S. Primary use will be as a Plex and general file server. I have it plugged into my router via ethernet. At the moment, the M920S does not have WiFi capabilities. Looks like Linux sees the ethernet connection but I have no idea on how to get it to establish an internet connection. So at the moment, it sits alone with no connection to the internet. Which means I'm not able to download anything. If I can't figure it out, I'll just dump Linux and load Win10 where I at least can figure out the connection because I don't have to use the console.
Kind of sounds like you made-up your mind of not using mint? Not sure what advice I can give you if that is the case. However if your router does not have eathernet port turned on or maybe cable, or DHCP ? Which is generally the case. Sometimes I will recommend USB network adapter for wifi ( Linux friendly) , take a look at Amazon.com for products, or if you suspect Linux is your issue could be driver for your laptop did not get detected, if it works on Windows, your Computer sounds very old if it has no WiFi, if that is the case maybe you could try Xfce instead of Cinnamon. Best of luck in either case.
