Till now, I was thinking that networking needs lot of knowledge (of course, it needs) but you made it so simple for the beginner. Now I can practice the stuff with a good understanding rather than copy-paste from web. Thanks to you Eli.

Eli, I just wanted to say, I have been viewing your videos for a few weeks and you are very informative. I am currently learning Linux to better myself in the computer industry and the way that you explain and teach is unrivaled so far. You take a very dry and bland text subject and turn it into an easy to learn atmosphere. You are doing a great job and hope you keep it up. Thank you again man!

Resolvconf gets populated with information by a set of hook scripts related to network interface configuration. The most notable difference for the user is that any change manually done to /etc/resolv.conf will be lost as it gets overwritten each time something triggers resolvconf. Instead make your change here > /etc/network/interfaces add this line to your interface "dns-nameserver 192.168.1.5" without the quotes of course.

You can use a 24-bit subnet mask with a Class A (10.x.x.x) IP address. If you're getting an error when you're trying to set this on a router, remember that you have to have the command "ip subnet-zero" enabled. Otherwise the router will look at the first octec of the IP address and sets the default mask to that range ..... 10.x.x.x=/8 172.16-31.x.x=/16 192.168.x.x=/24. I hope that helps

10.0.0.0 is a private reserved address range. It is not routeable and is one of the address ranges organizations use on LANs. It gives you a large pool of addresses.

It seems the init.d/networking restart is deprecated hence you have to use the following sudo ifdown -a "to turn off" sudo ifup -a "to turn on" correct me if wrong.

Thank You for this. I was having trouble with the sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart. It was not updating my network settings after changing the interfaces file. I tried your method and it works nicely.

TTL= TIME TO LIVE. That is a counter, when it gets 0 the package is killed, it the maximun size is 255. Wheneve a ping pass through a switch or something this ttl gets minus 1, until it gets 0. When gets 0 the package is killed for it does not keep going around using bandwidth unecessary. For change the ttl, you can use a parameter -t [NUMBER] ping -t 255 [site or host] Hope this helped.

No, you don't need to pay anything to host server (except indirect cost of running computer), besides there lot of solutions that runs severs on your computer and most likely you not even aware of that. If you have LAN you need to forward server port from your computer to public IP (IP on internet side) in router configuration, you use that port for minecraft server and it should work :) without that only computers in LAN will be able to connect to it

@123456iambelial Nevermind, i figured it out. For those who does not know you would need to edit two files: /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts then just change the current hostname. The /etc/hostname there should be only 1 line, so change that then for /etc/hosts there are 2 hostname you need to change and both are located in the 2nd line. Cheers

great video. helped me refresh my memory of some networking bits i had forgotten. One little gripe: this is debian oriented. that's fantastic and it's really great for linux noobies and debian users, but i was actually looking for a way to configure my CentOS box but this class doesn't cover red hat based distros. not knocking your classes because i've watched and learned a lot, but i would love it if you could cover red hat based networking/administration because it is slightly different.

IMO it's poor form to just type "ping [destination]" causing it to ping forever and then entering Ctrl+C to every time stop it. Use the option -c for count like this: ping -c 4 [destination].
