I recently started dipping my toes in the world of Linux. So far I've tried Mint and Pop OS. In today's video i take Ubuntu for a spin on an old HP Office PC.

yeah the new Ubuntu installer doesn't work right. I think you can download a ISO with the old installer I remember having issues with the new one as well. This problem has been there for a while now they should make it clearer on the site.

I love Linux. I'm on the latest release of Ubuntu, both on a Yoga ThinkPad and a Lenovo Desktop PC. Both came with windows pre-installed, i wipe off windows and strictly uses Linux.

24.04 has a new installer which I had no issues with, but some might have. Until 24.04.1 comes out 22.04 might be a better fit for the average person simply because it's pretty mature by now. Some have had some other issues with 24.04, but not 22.04, I had none at all, I love this release. But there is a reason why for example users on 22.04 cannot upgrade to it yet, at least without forcing an upgrade. There's still some things to iron out. For most people 24.04 should work just fine but it's not perfect for everyone just yet.

Same computer but using the Xeon(R) CPU E3-1265L v3 (uses less power) and the Radeon E9173 low power needs as well. Nice little emulation system. Can play up to some PS3 games.

The reason why you have issues installing and I have had issues before as well is because of Balena Etcher. Balena Etcher for some reason corrupts usb flash drives while flashing ISO's and makes the USB Flash Drives unusable and breaks the ISO. I would suggest using Ventoy to create USB Bootable Flash Drive because you can install a whole bunch of ISO's onto one USB Flash Drive
@basicdadtech

Thanks. Might try that for next time.

I have no idea how Etcher became so prominent, it's the only one of the bunch that I've ever had corrupt flash.

Hey! I have a tip for you, instead of having to flash every OS to a USB drive get something called ventoy. What that does is installs ventoy to the USB drive, where you can drag and drop the ISO image to the ventoy folder, that will allow you to have more than 1 operating system on 1 USB and it is just easier to do than flashing a new one every time. Seriously look into it, you will thank me later.

I just burn an install DVD and connect a USB drive. I pulled one out of an old laptop.

I installed Ubuntu on a HP desktop to dual boot. The problem is i could NEVER get the sound to work. Worked fine on the windows side but not on Linux partition. Kind of pathetic. Anyway i removed the Linux partition. Good thing i made a usb bootable to reinstall windows and remove grub.

That new installer seems to have a bad time with older hardware. It hangs after the driver selection page on my 3rd gen i7. Kubuntu's works fine

Myself useing Linux Mint on a Optiplex 790 with a i7-2600k, 16 GB of ram, and a Nvidia GTX 1650 Super, but mainly for Anime/RU-vid some Emulation. Work's Pretty good for what i use it for. Have another of the same, running Windows 10 for some games that i can't run under linux, it also run's pretty Well, Like Destiny 2 Ect. which will not work under Linux As to fortnight, it use's EAC and BattlEye, Anti-cheat systems, and the CEO as i recall will not flip on the Linux support, Same with Destiny 2

I have a dell optiplex 3420 sff with xeon E3-1245 v5 , 16 GB DDR4 RAM 2133 MHz, 256 GB Nvme 3rd generation and 1TB HDD. I'm looking for the best performance gpu that i can get for it for gaming. Any suggestions?

At most probably a 6600. That's without having a huge GPU bottleneck. Obviously nothing would stop you from getting anything all the way up to a 4090 but the GPU would be held back a lot by your CPU. Plus, in your case AMD drivers have lower overhead, which will help performance in CPU bottlenecked scenarios.

@@thetechdog low profile cards are hard to find in the market in pakistan like rx 6400. i can easily get rx 550 or nvidia quadro p 620,p1000 cards are they good for 1080p gaming? or should i save some money and buy at once the good card?
@thetechdog
@thetechdog 13 дней назад
@@hamzahassan24 Of all you mentioned the P1000 seems to be the best. Though it would be better to save up for something better. The RX550 will struggle with 1080p titles unless you're playing esports. I'd say choose between the P1000, GTX 1050 or a RX560 depending on which one is cheaper. I'm not saying they're powerhouses, they might struggle with some huge bloated AAA games, but they will do better than the 550. The low profile spec is a pretty limiting factor which means you have less GPUs to choose from. Ideally you would save up for a 6400, but I do not know how expensive the market is where you live. In the situation that the 6400 is more than 2 times the price of a P1000 or RX560 or 1050, I'd probably go for one of the 3 GPUs mentioned instead. Also make sure to use upscaling like FSR in games, that will help you achieve better performance.

Ubuntu generally isn't really liked that much anymore in the Linux community, they have there own packaging format called SNAP for application and some code for that is closed source witch is a no go in the Linux community, also the parent company Canonical has made some controversial choices. Some influential people in the FOSS movement even have called it spyware. Non the less its a great OS for the average person.
@thetechdog
@thetechdog 13 дней назад
Snap is fine, I use it everyday and the average user wouldn't notice a thing. The server is closed source but snapd, which is running on your PC isn't. Even then Rudra proved you can create your own snap server if you wish to do so. He created his own server implementation called lol. However, there just isn't any interest from people for something like that. Sideloading snaps is also possible and someone could've created a third party app to manage and install third party snaps that way. If there was any interest, of course.

@@thetechdog I just don't see why you would use snap over flatpak though
@thetechdog
@thetechdog 13 дней назад
@@jackrenders8937 Because I prefer it. I just install it and forget about it as it auto updates, and if something goes bad I can roll it back to the previous version. Plus it can do more than just desktop apps. Command line experience on flatpak also isn't very good. And on Debian based systems snapd supports reexecuting itself, which means it can update itself independently from the system's repos. I can understand the snap experience isn't as good on non Debian distros, though. Flatpak is good, don't get me wrong, but I prefer snap. And both have their own strenghts and weaknesses.
