Thanks for you thoughts on this! Wow especially when it came to sound and recording, you can really hear that A1RM4X did a lot of research and is still experimenting! I'd love an extra video about content creation.

My mother never used a PC before, now for the last 10 years she has used Linux mint no problem, sending email- looking at cats on facebook and doing some banking. No problems at all. She used Windows for a few weeks, things broke and I installed Linux and she never had a problem since.

You are 100% right about using BWAV. It's still the pro standard (or AIFF). Also, the moment you enter postproduction stay away from inter images compression. Stick to 'I Frame Only' aka Intra only. So if your rushes are H264, transcode to DNXHR or Apple ProRes proxies for editing. Relink on the RAW images and conform the timelines for color grading and Delivery. Resolve, Fusion, Nuke work great on Linux. I very recently tested Debian, Ubuntu and Rocky with NVidia. (550 driver version). I had to install OpenCL and a couple of other packages, but it works fine. The only issue is the disappearing of quicitime Pro Res from the 8.6 to 9.4 version of Rocky with Davinci Resolve. I tested Rocky 9.1, 9.3 and 9.4. 9.3 was very unstable but 9.4 stabilized everything. Debian boockworm was a near out of the box success. I tried Gnome, KDE 5 and XFCE. All these desktop worked very well. PS: Mac are still the best platforms for sound production. Linux is far behind.

I had to stop watching CTT due to the number of times he presents his opinions and experiences as fact, and the number of times he is just plain wrong or inaccurate stating that there’s no solution when it’s a simple settings toggle or some such. Frankly he quotes his time at “Geek Squad” as the basis for knowledge way to often and frankly, I’ve spent way too much of my own career cleaning up messes geek squad made. He’s fairly competent as a power user, but falls short of an expert often enough that I just simply can’t.

Totally the reason why I rip on the guy in my reaction videos to him. The opinion as fact stuff, and speaking from a position of authority, (that he definitely does not have.) On top of him being inaccurate many times. Along with the clickbaity headlines, is why I see him as a detriment to promoting Linux than a help.

I noticed that many people have different experience in Linux. Like nvidia for example. Some ppl say that its just works on Wayland. For me its not. As for environment kde fill nice from customize perspective but its also fill buggy(especially if you overdo it). Gnome after updates does freak-out with extra mods. Now i wonder what ppl say for Cinnamon. Is it more stable? I need a workstation not a system that i need to tinker after each update. So far i do wonder to switch to Mint to have less problems so i can focus more on my work. If it comes Davinci is there solution for exporting mp4 on Linux? Does it support as many formats as windows does. Or is it solved in payed version? Problem is not solved if it works but also how it works.

Fair feedback. However Nvidia issues are mostly ironed out since the release of 555 drivers. It is not perfect yet but we have come a LONG way. When it comes to DE, I am on the KDE side because of its features. Yes, plasma 6 is not polished yet but once setup to my needs (latest stable version 6.0.5 + kwin patch for explicit sync + beta 555 drivers + custom shortcuts + ICC profile for my screens) gave me the best experience. GNOME is struggling with multiple monitors + mirroring, only way around is a script like the one Chris uses in his video. For Cinnamon, it is really good however it does not support wayland yet... It will come but we will have to play the patience card (specially Nvidia users). If you are willing to stay on X11 for a moment, it could be your go to. The main value added from Wayland is multi refresh rate support (huge difference in term of experience if you have more than one monitor) and better perf in game (not in term of avg fps but in term of input lag / responsiveness). Yes you loose global shortcut (there is workaround for that too): it is not perfect but still better than x11 for my usage. For DaVinci I double checked on my machine and I can export in mp4 container (AV1, H264 and H265). How does it compare in term of feature versus windows: all the scripts / plugins I use are functional. Only difference is that it never crashes on Linux, and I push it a lot... On windows, lets say I had some issues... Your argument is on point though, but it is fairly hard for me to compare ALL the function from Resolve windows vs Resolve Linux (nor all the functions for each DE / each protocol display) knowing that next patch could make my work obsolete. This video is long and I have the feeling I said nothing in it if I really start to dig in the details...

i's still not perfect on nvidia and 555 drivers, looking at forums people on 40X0 cards seems to be doing good and anything older is still funky, and that my experience, running 30 series and 555 with explicit sync patch and even firmware off still have lot of stutters and general strange behavior, like Kwin using 100% of one cpu cores some times. But that's okay, it's still beta and i working way better then older drivers.

Recently tried wayland on KDE RTX2080 with the 555 driver and it mostly worked, but some qt applications didn't launch at all, some games did stutter really badly (they do so on x11 with 555 too) and KDEs "launch as user" feature did only work for some applications which is a critical feature for my workflow. So yeah wayland and NVIDIA still have a long way to go.

I used my GTX 1060 6GB card in Windows and Linux Mint (Before LMDE came out) and Ghost Recon Wildlands always had some screen tearing when the scenes would get really busy. With Mint, i eventually got an AMD RX580 8GB and the same thing happened. Still very playable. Skip ahead a few months when i started using Fedora to daily drive on my hardware, and MAN did Wayland make a huge improvement. I believe the game runs better on Fedora with Wayland than it did on Windows and Mint (no offense Mint).

As a Linux user and an honest guy I have no problems to list Linux problems. Linux is more customizable and for this reason it's not an ""easy and ready to use OS" like Windows or Android. Somethings can get ugly to make them work. I'm facing a pain in the as to make the Mame Emulator to work properly on my computer. On Windows Mame works fine and easy but on Linux I'm having 3x more work.

I am a Linux and FOSS-advocate, because of that I also am hypercritical and I point out any problem on Linux, because I want it to improve so that I can legitimately recommend people to use Linux instead of Windows if they can. 😉 Biggest pains in the butt for me which I can think of so quickly: default audio-volume being 100%, media-encoding/decoding being pretty bad in some cases, pretty bad bundled filemanagers with other software, XDG being difficult to use (you have to play a guessing name to find out how to set a default application for a particular type of program), setting Qt-theming being a Herculian task compared to setting GTK-theming. Customizability is a great asset! Don't forget that no user is forced to customize Linux, for those users we have a few hundred distros with a GUI-installer and a lot of preselected programs and 1 preselected desktop-environment. I don't like to use that (I am a tweaker, Arch and dwm here) but for those people who do it never was easier to choose one and use it. 😆 I never used the Mame Emulator. Have you tried RetroArch or just another emulator for those systems?

Just wanted to add that his amd issue is most likely the same one which I experienced way back on my r9 390x, where it wouldn't switch profiles on the fly and it remained in powersave so only 40-50% utilization you had to manually change to performance or use gamemode by feral interactive to force it to performance.

People keep neglecting x11 allows way easier interaction with window management than wayland. Here's my thing: I use bash extensively to manage my day to day UX. I've literal global hotkeys for applications with start/toggle and sometimes context dependant interactions. I use my window manager (i3) bindsym commands AND xdotool when it's not enough. On wayland ?: only half feature complete projects. Nowhere near enough control to replicate my way of doing things. Even if I'd love to run wayland with another wm with new Nvidia drivers: I just can't, it throws out my whole custom UX out the window.

I had to go back to Windows because AMD decided they don't want to support GFX8/Polaris anymore. You need to install an older version of the entire stack essentially, otherwise you have no OpenCL. You can't just install the older OpenCL part because some apps will not work with new drivers and old OpenCL. And in some cases, even with the complete stack of older drivers, applications will just decide you don't have OpenCL and either not open or refuse to use it.
@vindu2011
@vindu2011 2 месяца назад
The main problem right now is Fedora 40 KDE. They decided to remove X11 before the entire explicit sync stack was ready (Fedora doesn’t ship Mesa 24.1 yet, KDE 6.1 is in beta, Nvidia 555 driver is in beta and not included in RPM fusion for Fedora 40). This was a decision made with anything but the end users in mind

I like your content and I follow CTT as well. But I still agree CTT on that Wayland and Nvidia drivers. The point he is making is, that he talks about stable drivers. Even Arch stable driver is 550 and not beta 555. You have to force this update to beta 555. I know that we are tinkerers but there are more users who wants a stable machine.

I followed Chris until about a year ago. Chris comes to Linux from predominately a Windows Server background. So his preference for the terminal is understandable. My Linux usage is far simpler than Chris's. His typical setup is far more complex than anything I would consider. As the complexity increases, so do the potential problems. The other thing is that Chris loves to try new things. He jumps into new software and technology at the drop of the hat. This too creates problems. For the typical computer user today, Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc are pretty much plug and play.

I miss arch already and I just swapped to kubuntu last night. It took me all of 3 hours to do the swap and get all my programs on, but its not what I want 😕 Cross referenced commands and solutions, with constantly building things and customizing , I never actually used anything, and I worked on it for a week 😂. Kde and all the other desktops are annoying, hyprland was it. I need to learn a little more about the system itself because I was stitll missing some things that are pretty basic, like microphone and some of the organization was a mess. I tried using some drive cloner and borked the whole hard drive, so i couldn't save it, but i made notes while i worked before so going back shouldn't be hard (plus I kept all my dotfiles, where a majority of my time was soent, so thats most of the week saved there)

For the vast majority of people who want to run Linux the only distros that matter for “newbies”: - Ubuntu - Debian - Linux Mint - PopOS - Manjaro (ick) - Arch (for the tech savvy) - Endeavor OS (for tech savvy people) - OpenSuse Any other distro should be considered after trying at least 2 or 3 of those. That’s not counting the other flavors of Ubuntu, Manjaro, etc. Don’t get me wrong other distros have their value but there really isn’t 500 distros that matter. I understand it was hyperbole.

You're right, I've been using Nvidia for years on my desktops and I've never, EVER, had these problems that people cry about so much. There is a hypocrisy in the opensoruce world of blaming Nvidia. As far as I understand, the problems come from notebooks with Intel graphics, where Intel, which is the manufacturer of that chip, should have provided a way to switch to another GPU from the beginning. But it's easier for people to curse Nvidia and accuse it of the problems. And yet she was the one who came up with the solution, but they continue to crucify her. Just look at serious programs like Blender that have long shown how to use all the power of Nvidia and there are still those who like to talk nonsense. There, i said it!

e aí safadão, vc fala português! vc está sempre no lance. Everything in the Linux world is too complex for me. That's why I can't give an opinion with propriety, but some things I say: Gnome marks the screen of my monitors with shadows from their desktops according to the time of use and itemity, unfortunately it is an inconvenient truth that no one wants to comment on. Wayland delivers noticeably superior HDR playback, and Linux's audio system is inferior. I can't explain why it's just a fact that I see every day. In fact, I hope for the constant evolutions of linux and this type of content helps a lot and is fundamental. Thank you guys!

Chris is 7800 XT problems are weird. He was not clear if it was just in one or two games (Chris loves the NVidia-sponsored Cyberpunk and the brand new Helldivers 2) or in general. I just know that my 5700 XT does get 100% usage on Linux. The 7800 XT is sufficiently old that I wouldn't expect driver problems. It is known that RDNA3 is a broken architecture, it doesn't get the performance which it should get because of some issue with the architecture, that is clear from the lack of progress (almost 0) from RDNA2 to RDNA3 if you compare the same number of shaders. Honestly, I prefer not to buy NVidia simply because NVidia has acted anti-gamer and anti-opensource for 2 decades. I am well aware that AMD is more opensource-friendly because it needed that more but AMD never was so anti-gamer (abusing closed-source code to gimp benchmarks, locking PhysX on their brand, NVidia did by using X87 for rendering it via the CPU). Having said that, AMD makes it damn difficult to choose AMD, look at how long AMD only had low midend with Polaris, RDNA1 and in the near future RDNA4 (250 mm² die). I might be tempted to choose an Intel-GPU the next time if Intel makes sufficient progress. Intel also has a rather shady past (DEC, all or nothing rebates, abusing their own compiler to cheat with benchmarks) but at least Intel seems to have changed, I don't see any improvement with NVidia.

What is a power user? Extensions on Gnome break, because the Gnome developers don't want you to use extensions, but use it as the developers meant it to be used. CT obviously knows about Linux, but he also did a lot of clickbait video's like Ubuntu is the devil and that you only need 2 distro's Debian and Arch. Saying that everything else is useless. I absolutely don't agree with that. I find it insulting. A lot of distribution developers put a lot of their time into making it and a lot users enjoy using it.
