This week was a heck of a time to be a Linux enthusiast. We’ll talk about the major xz backdoor and how it effects the Steam Deck (spoiler alert: it doesn’t). Plus, we’ll drill into the numbers from the March Steam Hardware Survey, and we’ll touch on a new 3DS emulator that definitely isn’t Citra. All this and more today! Let’s get right into the news.

I just wish Valve would release official steam os for desktop PCs. I wonder why there still been no word why steam os isn’t out yet. Next year windows 10 will be EOL.

I think problem is with hardware comtarability. Valve can't be sure users will have good enough experience on Steam OS if they use some ancient as mammoth laptop or Broadcom card or RGB-LGBT featuring hardware that cannot he controlled in Linux. I guess its Microsoft's doing, why hardware makers aren't concerned about Linux. I remember they banned laptop makers from making Chromebooks in the same lineup as windows laptops, but turned back

@@theworldoffun8997 Wouldn’t doubt it. Ms has bullied out all other OS companies out of business. Like IBM OS/2 Warp was shut down by ms. Many other were also shut down or bullied out of business or by ms lawyers. I still own physical copy of OS/2 warp somewhere in storage. Yeah I tired HaloISO while back when steam os 3.2 (I think) and on my GTX 1080ti. Game mode was very unstable. Out 10 reboots. 7-8 time it would crash just after to Game mode. And few time it get in and actually able select steam game. Would freeze up or just reboot. The pop up menu to start/shutdown/reboot desktop mode didn’t show 90% of the time. After 10 reboots I’d get lucky and get to switch desktop mode and it would run fine. Once got desktop mode. It ran decent on my 2700x/16GB/1080ti/ssd. Got Subnautica play not bad and played many hours of metro exodus. If anything it ran better under steam os then did Win10. But yeah been waiting for Valve to say something about steam os, and hope they have decent GTX drivers. Yeah I’d would love upgrade to 3090, but here it’s like $2500+ which make no sense. It’s more money then new 4080 is. Which $1800 Canadian atm here. Or like upgrade to Amd Rx 6900xt is like $1000 Canadian here. So gave up, not till Canadian gpu prices comes down some. But still hoping steam os is coming sometime soon. Before Win10 EOL.

This was a way of hedging their bets when Microsoft released the Microsoft App Store; Steam was at risk of becoming redundant. With the precedent of Excel killing Lotus 123 and Internet Explorer killing Netscape; Valve felt the pressure. Currently, Game Pass is more of a game rental subscription service, but you never know if Microsoft tries to go for Valves head. By showing Linux as viable for the mainstream user is basically Valve's ultimatum.

The XZ Backdoor did effect me as I run Debian Testing, I updated to fix it after its discovery, but I can't help but wonder how deep the damage went, and how many other types of attacks were attempted with other core components of Linux. The reassuring part is it was discovered before it caused widespread damage lending to to the narrative of more eyes on the code helps discover such attacks.

I think SteamOS for Desktop would be a good choice for new linux users. Being immutable it would prevent people from breaking their own system and it there would be less choice paralysis for which distro to choose imo. We need a flagship linux distro, and one that could be shipped preinstalled on gaming computers bought in stores.
@Soletestament
@Soletestament 2 месяца назад
Im not the biggest fan of immutable systems. Yes it protects the lowest common denominator. But it also locks users out of tinkering with their systems. Also the flatpack only model steamos uses sucks. Not having functioning antialazing in libreoffice makes your eyes bleed. And its not the only program affected. Flatpacks break a lot of programs due to their isolation from hardware. Even discord has issues in its flatpack release. So while i get the appeal of immutable OS....it really is better to just learn how to use a regular system safely. Only place i see immutables being good is for appliances. But that kind of flys in the face of valve's claim that a steam deck is a handheld pc
@DaftBlazer
@DaftBlazer 2 месяца назад
@@Soletestament If you want to tinker with your system, other distros will still exist. I've had friends new to linux try to install some program and they reboot to a black screen. Even linus from LTT decided to just not read and broke his system. It honestly just doesn't look good for Linux when stuff like that happens and I want Linux to succeed. We need to be able to give even common folk a good experience. Then the computer enthusiasts and tinkerers will decide to go further and use other distros and learn more about the operating system. Flatpak will also get better with development, the more people we bring in to linux will bring in more developers to build and fix more things

It so happens to be that I got the Steam Hardware Survey again last week (I got it around 5 times in 4 years while I never got it when I still used Windows) and I took a look at the operating system market share. On Steam the Linux-marketshare dropped a little bit back then. But this week it has a 0.18% increase. It seems that there are some fluctuations just because of the sample size being too small. It is consistently a bit under 2%. I don't care about a majority marketshare but 10% would be nice just to get better support from game-developers, especially in regard to anti-cheat, because EA is about to break a few games for Linux and this time more permanently.

I'm quite disappointed with steam.I do have Linux as my os. December 2023, I'm looking forward to the new Mount & blade 2 update, a couple of days prior I updated my Linux mint to the newest. From that day to now Mount and blade will not run. This month April new up dates to my games, Wartales, Fatherest Frontier, will not play. My favorite Outward now refuses to play. I have contacted Steam 3 weeks ago now to highlite the challenge and to date they have ignored me. I have tried many times to fix the problem. I have decided to now replace my OS, and completely rebuild my pc. The only thing I can think of.

On one hand, yeah, if you buy a game and it stops working after the purchase, then you should be refunded, but on the other hand, you bought a Windows game that was never officially supported on Linux. It doesn't need to be a Linux port to actually qualify as support either. It could be like what Capcom did where they broke the game for like a week on Linux, but then fixed it because they actually wanted Steam Deck players to be able to play it.But if you buy a Windows game with no official Linux support from the developer and then it stops working, I don't know. I feel like from a legal standpoint, that's on you because the company had no obligation for a platform they weren't supporting. Now if the game ever had Linux support, and then they broke it, then they would absolutely warrant a refund.
@theBoomerDoomer

As a consumer who purchased BFV as a Linux user, I feel wronged. They should either refund me the purchase price of the game (and any other Linux users they rear-ended), or fix the game. Somehow, I think fixing the game might be the cheaper (and better for them) option. EA needs some image help... if they extend an olive branch to Linux users, maybe it could help with turning the tide for us.

lol... good luck getting either one done. Maybe if Valve pushes for something related to Steam Deck purchases... but EA doesn't care about you.

We can’t blame abusive comments, that sounds like a slippery slope towards stagnation and yesmen. I think big projects run by small teams or even single individuals should be avoided and forked. Something as important as xz shouldn’t be in the hands of a single mentally unwell person.

As if: A) it's predictable which projects and packages will become popular and/or mission-critical for ansulary userspace subsystems B) you're going to be able to find someone with the 1. Skill 2. Passion and 3. Time to dedicate to such a project C) there's some governing body that can make such determinations and fulfill the above criteria to satisfactorily remediate the problem Unless the US government sets up a FOSS standards body and properly funds critical package development then this is the order of things.

@@gardiner_bryant Thanks for the reply! A) In my mind it's less of a critical need, and more of a chronic insecurity. Checks and balances are lacking when the weakest link is on the top. While we can't stop every troll and malicious actor, we can reinforce ourselves for when they appear. B) Talent is plentiful, especially when people are organized and directed towards an end goal. Even if individual people are less skilled than the single executive, division of labor allows them to focus their efforts. C) I wouldn't ask for a centralized governing body to enforce my points. I'm more hoping people are swayed by the facts, whichever way they point, and as a community individually choose the right path.

People aren't swayed by facts. That's something I've had to learn the hard way. Especially not nerds. Despite what we want to believe, we are emotional creatures and human beings will ALWAYS be the weakest link in any security apparatus. No matter how secure your code or your supply chain, people are the broadest and most vulnerable attack surface.

EA breaking games on Linux Don't get me wrong, I'm a Linux user since 2008 and play games exclusively on Linux. But I have to say something here I don't agree with. That's because EA wasn't lying, at least not to the supported customers. I mean EA does not support Linux for their broken Battlefield game. It is in fact Valve who supports this. Look if someone take your product and let's say it does not work in Windows or MacOS, because you don't support it, and the product is broken on these systems. Is it your fault? No, off course not. And I think this is something similar here happening.

Regardless of how many total players play Battlefield V on Linux, the steam page says under the system requirements that 64-bit Windows 10 or later is supported and says nothing about Linux. It's nice that Proton allows us to play these Windows games on Linux, and it sucks that this update breaks that, but it is a tad disingenuous to say they are lying. Currently the Steam Deck Verified status of the game is Unsupported. I'm not sure what it was before this change...if it was Verified or Playable, and someone bought the game while it was labeled as such, I do think they deserve a refund, though it's still kind of on Valve rather than EA. I have no love for EA, but I don't think they are beholden to this use case they never claimed to support.

Battlefield 5 is just a lie. All, really EVERY game with community servers, will always have no cheaters. Removing the chance for community hosted and controlled servers means CHEATERS enter the playing field. I know so many games: Enemy Territory Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Command & Conquer Renegade, Renegade X, Rising Storm games, Red Orchestra games, Day of Defeat, and many more which just are free of hackers. Squad probably too. All of the modern Service games, can not get rid of hackers and cheaters at all.
