I tryed it on my Legion GO but switched back to Windows becouse it jist works better in my opinion. Becouse some things dont work in nested desktop and when you are not in nested desktop you dont have on screen keyboard. And the Steamos keyboard is really bad if you use other language than english and my favourite keyboard called onboard didnt work at all.

People who say "Gaming is hard on Linux" haven't tried proton. I don't mean to diminish the difficulty; I do most of my gaming with GOG games on Lutris, and it's fine, I'd say 80%-90% are basically out of the box, but Steam Deck and Steam OS are seriously on another level. This Bazzite content is so needed. It's more or less my first linux distro as a PC gamer and someone who uses office software. The transition has been mostly seamless but the community could definitely benefit from a comprehensive guide to gaming on Bazzite or linux more generally. Like from initial set up, automounting drives and making new steam libraries(unexpectedly tricky), to things like hardware tips like what components work well with linux or cpu/gpu/ram tuning or setting up an NVME raid game drive. An easier onboarding could really help open up the pipeline of PC gamers who are getting off windows 10 and don't necessarily appreciate windows 11.

12:01 I tried bazzite a bit ago and had to switch off because it gave me audio skipping issues on my Nvidia 4060 ASUS laptop, but the _layout_ of how it functioned and installed was nothing short of beautiful. I love how Ptyxis feels designed for easy distrobox use out of the box. If I could guarantee that audio bug wouldn't happen to anyone else I recommend it to, then it would be an *effortless* recommendation from me. And frankly, when my only complaint with a distro is "I had a few bugs with it (that might be fixed in the future)", that's extremely rare in my experience, because often times if I have a complaint, it's because of the core design of how the distro does stuff, which isn't the case here. Goes in B tier for now, but would be S tier if it was bugfixed a bit. I would switch back instantly if I could do so in a manner where nothing went wrong with it.

I've actually been daily driving bazzite for about 5ish months now.. and previously I was just on silverblue, so it was just an 'rpm-ostree rebase' away for me.. I've actually been using silverblue for the past couple years. The beauty of fedora atomic is really being able to flip between base images at will, as well as the stability of course. One of my side projects is to work on forking Bazzite to customize my rpm layers into a base image, although it's broken right now.. When you deviate away from the base image, updates get kinda slow.

For retro gaming / emulation there is also Batocera which offers pretty much everything out of the box in a console-like fashion. Updates are rare but it's very stable considering all the projects it is based on. I daily Bazzite's sibling, Bluefin. It's great as a developer OS and for gaming. Everything works pretty much as expected as it would in Windows - except for those titles that are known not to work. There are still some similar quirks with it as you're seeing in Bazzite. As for Linux gaming - I've been working on some content creators lately on covering Linux more as an alternative for gaming. This is especially for the low budget gamers out there that are going to be up against it when Win 10 is sunset and Win 11 won't be an option. The prevailing opinion is "well, Linux is cool and all; but, you can't play Fortnite and CoD, and those are the only games that really matter to gamers." The reality is that there are way, WAY more games that do work on Linux than those that don't; however, since a few of the more popular titles won't work because the publishers are unwilling to enable support for Wine/Proton on Linux - it's not even considered as an alternative. Personally, I'm not going to stand for it, and will continue to evangelize Linux-based operating systems are solid alternatives to the mainstream - particularly for those with aging hardware that won't be able to move to Windows 11. The days of compromise are over for the Linux desktop, it's ready to be seen as a viable alternative. We just need more people with a larger reach to start showing how good it can be.

Bluefin is from the same “collective” group, and is geared more towards “productive” tasks. It can also install Steam and does the same Nvidia magic. And you can rebase from Bazzite to Bluefin Aurora is the same as Bluefin but for KDE The stuff it does to make Nvidia “just work”, and does that better than anyone else is the killer feature for me. That is the main thing get makes Steam OS unviable outside of the Deck and whatever future Valve hardware. Also, there is a GUI to set up distro box instances (minimal versions of “normal” Linux installs.) so I have an Ubuntu setup and can install stuff with apt from my “base” terminal window (so no dropping into some other system like WSL…it’s perfectly seamless)

Bazzite is a cool project and I want to use this as a HTPC to replace consoles as most of my library is in steam anyway and its something I have been chasing since Windows Media Center! The question becomes if Nvidia is not recommended on it due to some issues then for an AMD system what are the benefits over Chimera OS? Also there is a lot of smoke that the next "XBox" is going to be a pc console hybrid. And MSFT wants to fix their OS for handhelds use. Also there is a lot of chatter about ARM cpus. Exciting times ahead for pc gamers and tech enthusiasts.
@HikariKnight
@HikariKnight 2 месяца назад
nvidia images do not have gamemode (same with desktop images), gamemode session is exclusive to the handheld, deck and htpc images which require amd gpus or intel arc gpus. nvidia and desktop images still have access to gamescope though so you can run it nested in desktop with "gamescope -e -f -w 1920 -h 1080 -- mangohud %command%" as launch options for a game, but you will not have access to all the gamemode session functionality. If you do use nvidia though, it is recommended to still use the X11 session due to the nvidia driver (this will most likely change later) Also there is testing being done with the NVK driver in the non nvidia images, and gamemode will most likely work on that in the future.

Tried a bit of both. In my opinion, Bazzite is a lot better because its desktop mode is way more powerfull, which also means you have more options setting up your HTPC. For example, I could simply make an web app of a RU-vid for TV page and add it to gamemode in bazzite. Doing the same in Chimera OS was hell. Also, it is way easioer to make installed apps in bazzite gamemode while chimera OS only supports flatpaks, and that only using the plugins

So how does this work with discord or trying to pull up RU-vid while gaming? Is this exactly like the steam deck or can I minimize game mode? Pull up RU-vid to like search how to do something in a game?

Any chance at a direct comparison to Nobara Linux? I'm now on the fence between these two distros for a dedicated gaming box.

8:17, Wootilty!! that would be so useful for me cause I have a few Wooting keyboards I use each day and setting them up requires messing with udev rules on Linux, luckily, the wootility download page has step by step guide, but its still an obstacle to new users if they are on Linux

Could this distro be usable as a daily driver for pc? Or is the immutable part too much of a limitation?
@augustdeer
@augustdeer 2 месяца назад
Immutable isn’t that much of a limitation if you’re willing to work within Distrobox/Toolbox. Plenty of people use Silverblue as their daily driver.

What I've done was set up a gaming rig to run an application called "Sunshine" and then just use a streaming client called "Moonlight" on my other devices and just play games like that. I only ever play games at the desktop now when it's something like Quake or some other FPS that requires me to have the highest framerate and least amount of latency, it's really nice.. the latency on it puts Steam's streaming service to shame, Im even using it right now to watch this video on my TV 🤣

This is it. This is the OS I want to build a small PC box for, because "a more powerful Steam Deck that sits connected to my TV" is all I want anymore. Damned if I can't figure out what's budget friendly and will do 1080p Ultra AMD-wise nowadays.

CachyOS uses Arch and is probably interesting. Nobara uses a highly modified Fedora, and supports stuff like Resolve out of the box, but I would not run it when possible.

What's going to be really interesting is when the Strix APUs start trickling down to the miniPC makers. These will have 16 RDNA3.5 APUs (up from 12 RDNA3 that the 7840 has), and presumably AMD aren't making such large APUs without addressing the memory bandwidth limitations. A quad-channel Strix box would obviously cost more than a dual-channel 7840, but it's going to be a *much* more powerful device in very much the same form factor.

Oh this is interesting for some reason I thought this was based on a Arch Linux and not fedora like the steam deck. That's why I went with Nobara which is made by Glorious egg roll who works on proton-ge. I am curious to see a comparison between the two. Also just out of curiosity does Bazzite fix the issue in game mode where the mouse stutters and jumps around? The other issue I have found for the steam deck and steam is is that when using the game mode you can not unlock it if you have the pin password unless you use a controller.

I haven't had any issues using Proton Experimental layer in Steam for my games. I run any of my purchased games, whether it's for Linux or not, without any issues. Even AAA games like Red Dead Redemption 2. So I don't really see the need for this OS. How does this OS run the Windows games anyway? Doesn't it use Proton too?

Change the VRam to 8GB from the bios. It's not going to double your fps, but some games could benefit greatly from it

I switched to Linux just after Christmas after using a steam deck for 3 months I decided to jump right in and not even keep my windows partition on my boot SSD, opting to wipe the whole thing and start fresh. I chose Kubuntu as it felt similar in layout to windows and it auto installed my driver's for my 3070ti and everything. I tweaked a couple settings but other than that every game I've launched on steam has worked perfectly, some in some cases it's even better than under windows in terms of FPS.

Most anticheats themselves work on proton, but most games that use them specifically disable Linux support. For example Fortnite. So yes, but actually no. My solution to this specific problem is to simply have two graphics cards, and one get passed to a virtual machine running a stripped down version of windows, and then using a custom compiled version of qemu to bypass vm detection. The game gets “streamed” back to the main Linux os over sunshine and a virtual network adapter so there is little to no latency / stutter, etc.

I’m using POPos and would switch to Bazzite but there are two issues in Bazzite I cannot seem to solve, I play Clone Hero and both Clone Hero and YARG on Bazzite crash on startup. Also I need to install xone in order to use my Rockband 4 guitar but I need DKMS in order to install it but every time I tried to install DMKS it fails. Right now both of these things are working correctly in POPos

i have installed the htpc edition on something as old as an i5 4th gen with an rx570 8gb with 16gb of ram on the nvidia part we really recommend anything RTX 20XX or GTX 16XX or newer (mainly due to NVK support and the chances of gamemode working on them in the future) but realistically you can use whatever is currently supported by the nvidia driver (i believe 10 series and newer?) We have also had people install it on a decade old imac (dont try this please) Personally i also run bazzite desktop on my laptops i use for work which are 10-14 years old respectively but i installed it on them expecting to not use them for gaming.
