The main reason the USA lost the game isn't Messi, though he obviously had a huge impact. It's the USA's fear of Argentina. They did not have any faith in their own ability to pull off an upset. They didn't press Argentina at all and just sat there when Argentina developed their passing game. Their legs were shaking and they lost possession even when they weren't being pressed. Football is 90% mental, 10% physical. If you play against a superior team with no faith in your own abilities, then the game is over before it begins.

One could tell once they scored, the intensity dropped with their eyes on the final. I was there in NRG stadium Houston....sitting above the goal opposite to the goal into which Messi took this free kick...I was ready to capture the entire moment with my Nikon SLR...starting from fastening show lases to netting this majestic free kick...when it got in..I started jumping and forgot to stop the recording...so last few second of my video after Messi's goal got tatters...I still watch it and did not remove the last part...still gives me goosebumps with the feeling that I actually witnessed and recorded history when Messi became the highest goal scorer for Argentina....
