I am a huge Messi fan and have been following and enjoying his career for years, but the Ballon d'Or is not an objective award. It is story-driven, it is social driven, it's hype-driven award. Think of it this way: Emmi Martinez doesn't make that last minutes kick save, France win back-to-back World Cups with Mbappe scoring a hat trick in the Final and awarded FIFA Golden Shoe. The narrative totally changes completely, all because of a fraction of a second that had nothing to do with their individual performances in the tournament. An INDIVIDUAL award that is heavily weighted by TEAM success is ridiculous. If that football is a few inches higher above Emmi's leg, Messi is not winning the Ballon d'Or and the story changes to he "failed to win a World Cup" and "Mbappe is the new GOAT". Messi's performance would have been EXACTLY the same, but we could have had a COMPLETELY different narrative, all based on a freak chance moment that could have gone either way and had no basis on Messi's or Mbappe's performances. Totally agree with this. In 2014 people were saying to be the best of all time, Messi needed the World Cup. So Higauin and Palacio miss chances that prevent Messi being the best. The Champions League has also been the same. There were years when Ronaldo did very little in finals, but won the award because his team got him over the line. So his brilliance was only fully recognised because his team stepped up. It's a very difficult award to say who deserves it, because there are so many factors that go into it. Putting the World Cup aside like Jules said, Messi had a good season in Ligue 1, had most assists, scored crucial beautiful goals winning the League by 1 point difference. He had to carry them as PSG were really poor. Haaland doesn't have much individual performances if you take away his Premier League tapins. He was invisible in all the Semi-Finals and Finals which City played. City's key players were the likes of Rodri, Silva and Gundo who turned up in big games.

I think Lionel Messi deserved to win yet another Ballon Dor this year. He had 38 goals and 25 assists for club and country last season and it’s not just his individual performances that stood out he played a critical role in helping Argentina win the World Cup because he was responsible for their offensive actions throughout the tournament and he excelled at both scoring and creating and he also won the Golden Ball. 8 Ballon Dors is crazy and I get it Erling Haaland had a great season with Manchester City and we’ve seen the unstoppable form Jude Bellingham has been in since he joined Real Madrid and despite that we should appreciate Lionel Messi for not just collecting yet another Ballon Dor to his name but he also won the World Cup and despite his greatness so many people tried to discredit his achievements because he didn’t win the World Cup saying he isn’t a leader he only functions well in the Barcelona system and he couldn’t win without Xavi and Iniesta and winning the World Cup shushed up all the critics but unfortunately we hear people trying to push a narrative that he won a rigged World Cup and it was only a 7 game tournament and winning the World Cup it’s a trophy that means so much to a player because it’s the most prestigious tournament in football and it happens just once every 4 years and what a player does at the World Cup plays a role in deciding the Ballon dor winner and I think Lionel Messi deserved to win it again this year.
My biggest issue is he didn’t play great for psg , you can’t score over 50 goals and win a treble and not win the ballon dor but you know they got to find a way to give Messi the award

That 36 year old dude had the highest assists in Ligue 1, second highest in Europe, was top 10 in goal scoring in Ligue 1. 16goals, 16assists, 32g/a for a league season is a great performance definitely not as great as his older standards but still better than 98% of other players in Europe. He even had a better league season than Debruyne, who was even arguably Mancity's best player in my opinion.

That is incorrect. If you calculate like that Messi made MLS win 2 trophies, won the WC, won the league in PSG, and not to mention its not including also winning Copa America 2021. Having an impact on playing weak teams is different than having an impact playing the best team. Jude is a great example of a player who can win this trophy. When you need a person to step up. He is there. Haaland is an example of a good player who can't lead a team. He is great at being lead.

People acting like Haaland was way ahead of Messi in stats this season, but their total G+A for club and country overall was almost dead even. So that's not really a deciding point here, it just comes down to what you value more out of the World Cup and the Treble, which is very debatable for sure, but historically the Balon D'or has always put more weight on the World Cup so it's the only logical conclusion to give it to Messi. The difference is Messi creates for his team and makes solo magic when the team is bad, while Halaand needs a midfielder to give him chances to score and does nothing at all when he has to create alone, which is why Norway watched from home while teams like Iceland and Scotland and Ireland have been to the tournament

I personally think Haaland should have won this one, but I understood why he didn’t. I thought at times, Messi played poorly at PSG, and I think that if this award is based on 1 collective year, it should have been Haaland. Individually, he had a better year with just as meaningful of trophies with a treble. This felt very much like celebrating Messi for his career, but it shouldn’t be about that.
Haaland plays in a team where his duty is just to score and he is good at it 100%. argentina was a team who was struggling to qualify for wc and he turned them into champions.
