The Berkshire was never gonna win because it traveled more distance than the Strasberg. He needs a staggered start like in track and field.

Need a crossover like they use on slot car tracks to switch but I bet that would have catastrophic results, haha! I tried a second race after this one and switched tracks but the 89 still won by a landslide. I think the gearing and speed control systems are just too different. Thanks for watching!

That was a fun race Chris. I love racing! The 89 mogul is just like Mario Kart, Gordon, Scotsman, Spencer, Connor, Catlin, Stephen, Kenji, Lightning McQueen from Cars, and Freddie. In the episode, Fearless Freddie, Freddie races Rheneas and Skarloey down the hill, but he cheats by taking old short cuts. Sir Handel remembers Freddie. That blooper made the mogul going backwards like Lightning's buddy Mater. Can't wait for the 90 and the base 3! You will love the 2023 volume 2 catalog that Lionel just released because it has fantastic new items! That's right!

Now that was fun Chris! And I'm sure we're all guilty of falling into the temptation of wondering: "Gee, I wonder how fast it'll go?" I gave that up after I was doing a speed test on a MTH "General" 4-4-0. It was fast all right, it flew off the temporary dining room table layout and landed in a chair! Thank goodness it didn't land in the china cabinet, the wife would have killed me! Anyway, that's a nice aquisition, that Strasburg 89! That whistle's probably as close as you can get to the real thing, and the size versatility mirrors the real 2-6-0 Mogul types. Six-coupled engines like that were economical go-anywhere engines that lasted right up to the end of steam. The Boston & Maine used them into the 1950s on commuter trains and if I remember right were the last B&M steamers to go. Fun video! Thanks for posting! (PS: If the worst happened and your 89 "crashed and burned" on the floor at least you could run it up to Sean for a fix! As we know he got a crash course in fixing 89's. Poor guy! He must have the patience of a saint!)

Cool video. The train race was nicely done. The MTH Berkshire the engineer forgot to disable the governor. The 89 must had something added to the coal. Maybe one of your Lionel postwar steam locomotives with postwar passenger cars could keep up with the 89.
@TomedysTrains
@TomedysTrains 9 месяцев назад
Lionel's model of Strasburg #89 is a very nice digital era locomotive, looking very much like the real thing. You can tell that Lionel really put attention to detail in this locomotive where it's not a repaint of a Mogul type steam locomotive from another railroad. For example, they added the Canadian National-style number boards on the front (both the angled number boards and the "license plate" number board) as well as spoked pilot wheels. One of the only major inaccuracies on Lionel's model of Strasburg #89 is the shape of the steam chest. Lionel incorrectly used the saddle shape steam chests, which is inaccurate for the Strasburg/Canadian National Moguls, but is accurate on the Boston & Maine Moguls. The Strasburg/Canadian National Moguls have flared square steam chests. The original scale Mogul tooling Lionel had was based on the Boston & Maine Moguls and then all other scale Mogul models were derived from that. I guess changing the shape of the steam chest was too much for Lionel to do to make an accurate model of the Strasburg/Canadian National Moguls. Oh well, I guess you can say "close enough" compared to some of Lionel's other models that they made that were not accurate to their real counterparts, like their [infamous] model of Chicago & Northwestern Ten Wheeler #1385.

Interesting idea, but I have a recommendation. So, I sometimes race my trains on a double track oval layout, and what I do is when the lead engine is completely clear of the second engine, I switch tracks, so the lead engine goes to the outer track, and the second engine goes to the inner track. I like to do this to see if the second engine really is capable of passing the lead, and Ive never had a derailment! (Ok, some close calls but we dont count those), Be that as it may, great video! Keep up the good work!

@tomrogers5516
@tomrogers5516 11 месяцев назад
That was interesting and even funny, Chris. Too bad about the unintended reverse start. I agree with some fans that the Berk had farther to go and (I'd say) it's a heavier loco. I like the staggered start suggestion or the loco's should have been started on the opposite tracks, so that #89 would have the longer distance. As you pointed out, the Lionel system doesn't have a speed limit per se. The use of the word 'highball' for fast is interesting, because a number of railfan video guys like to use the word 'booking' to describe a speeding train. I personally don't like this because it's kind of racist. It was a term used by the lookout for petty thieves who were stealing from convenience stores in the small neighbourhoods of major cities in the '50s. Usually many of these small gangs were young black teens and the lookout's warning was 'Let's get booking! The cops are coming!' The term came from 'bookitty-book' which was the sound their shoes made as they ran through an alley. At that time, many jr. high guys, me included, had taps put on the heels of their shoes. It was the 'cool' thing then!
