Lionel's O Scale Camelback Steam Locomotive 

For the first time ever, I spent over $400.00 at the grocery store for stuff that usually lasts two weeks. They are a lot smaller and have a lot less in the package. People like me that only get about a grand a month to live on, that is a LOT of money. I wish people would have a concept of this, because when people say "It's not a lot of money" the people that sell things hear the message that people will pay whatever they want to charge and think "That's not a lot of money."

Can you make your content inclusive and accessible by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning? it is sadly very hard to watch relying only on the auto captioning (Im Profoundly Deaf)

Fun fact about the camelback's there's actually 3 still existing one of them that i know Is reading 1187 aka strasburg #4 witch Is currenly undergoing a cosmetic restoration at the age of steam roundhouse in Sugarcreek Ohio

I received one of these for Christmas and I have no complaints- it has the best smoke capacity out of any locomotive in my collection, sounds great, and has really bright headlights/lamps. I love it!

I got the Blue Comet version for $579.00 from Nicholas Smith train's in PA......great store....check them out for some great trains and price's....

As always great video! I just picked up this engine recently this week before Christmas. I do also have the MTH Premier version as well. I live only 5 minutes away from where these engine's once ran. The CNJ was the most famous and largest user of Camelback steam engine's. Almost every single major railroad that operated here in New Jersey had owned or experimented with a Camelback engine at one point in time. These engine's were successful but proved to be too dangerous to operate and so the ICC had banned production of any new Camelback type engine's by the 1920's as a result. The Erie Railroad owned the largest Camelback's ever built and the only articulated examples. To give you an example of just how unpopular and unpleasant these engine's were to operate, a CNJ fireman who was firing one of these was so frustrated with the lack of proper communication between him and his engineer and the fact that he was freezing on the tender deck as the train was doing full track speed in the dead of winter, he jumped off the engine and into a large snow bank beside the tracks. The engineer noticed that the train was starting to loose momentum and his steam pressure began to drop dramatically. When the train finally did come to a stop he realized that his fireman had disappeared on him. The fireman quit his job that very day. True story I was told by a long retired CNJ engineer many years ago.

I have an older William's Reading Camelback locomotive and Reading passenger train my grandfather gave me. He was a PRR fireman and then Engineer for quite a few years. Wish I could run the Locomotive, but sadly the rubber "shoes"??? have rotted away and I'm unable to find a replacement so far. Cool engine, train and memory though. And yes, Pap said if you threw a rod, you were wiping the whole side of the boiler off.

My first Legacy steamer is the Blue Comet one. Just picked it up last week and haven't tried it yet. I liked the Horseshoe Curve Beer car. Where can I get one? I have a couple of those beer cans.

I was so glad when Lionel finally updated the camelback with Legacy. I have the originally TMCC one and was wanting a legacy one for a while. I ended up buying this one and the Blue Comet one. They're awesome little engines. Love the whistle smoke.

For added realism on Lionel's O gauge steam locomotives, I've wondered if it would be possible to have a larger capacity smoke generator that would, for a brief time, expel smoke at the cylinders when the loco would start moving. In other words, having a realistic imitation of the clearing of cylinder water whenever a steam locomotive would begin moving. At the same time a small stream of smoke could be emitted constantly (beside that from the smoke stack) from a location on top of the engine near the cab as an imitation of steam pressure constantly being released (in low quantity) from the boiler.

Thanks for giving a little back story about camelback engines. My granddad always loved those, I have a few HO ones, but never really knew much about them.

Picked one up, ran it 20 minutes and the whistle steam stopped... 5 minutes later the sounds crapped out. Argh... This darn hobby...

Great and informative review. Must have been very successful for Lionel because they re-cataloged them again in 2023.

I received one of these as well. I ordered a custom run from Mr. Muffin's Trains in the PRR paint scheme. Question for you Eric, do you notice the coupling between the engine and the tender riding up? I noticed as the engine pulls the tender the coupling slides out a bit breaking the infrared connection between the engine and the tender cutting off the sounds. You or anyone else having this issue?

After watching this, I had to pause it to do some more research into this locomotive. VERY interesting.

Two questions:1) How much smoke liquid is required for this engine and where do you put it in? Also, Can you run all of the sounds running conventional power?

I agree great engine for price and it's great have different types locomotives from each era and rolling stock no matter how layout is designed modern or old era this great on any layout especially tight curves love this Eric .

I actually know the full class of this camelback. It's a new jersey central 4-6-0 T-38 camelback. They ran in the new jersey central for a while until the were retired of course in the 1950s. Sadly none of them have survived and were all scrapped

I like the smoke from the whistle. It's a nice added touch to the locomotive.

Hey Eric, very cool locomotive I do have a question about it though. I have a new “Strasburg camelback” and mine won’t make sounds, and I think it’s due to me only having 18 Volts powering it on my layout, do you know how many volts it takes to run the engine and the sound? (Just curious.)

Also the 5 whistles sounded like 1. The Pennsylvania 0-6-0 switcher whatever it was 2. The polar express 3. One of those Lionel 4-8-4 northerns you have 4. The N&W y6b or Allegheny 5. One of the Berkshires or something like that I can't remember which engine it was
