This lesson covers the speechreading basics for the TH sound. Lipreading and memory skills are involved.
Working memory is important while listening in situations that are more challenging, such as in background noise. There are many links between memory and hearing. See my blog articles on this topic: heara.ca/hear-... and heara.ca/heari...

Thank you for the info re: memory. I am struggling with memory and now I understand why we do memory excercises in lipreading class. I am going to show my wife this end section. It is very illustrative and helpful 😊

Thank you so much. I’m doing your lip reading course all in readiness too! Loving it so far but not getting it all yet. But I will get there! Thank you for giving your time and expertise.

The visual cues are a huge help - facial expressions and gestures. I really have to concentrate and if I get distracted for even a second, it throws me off the whole sentence. Excellent info on working memory.

Visual listening is effortful, huh? Glad you liked the working memory information. Strengthening working memory is time well spent.

That is the plan, to go over it again and again.

Even after memorizing the TH sentences, I still only could lip read Sentence A & C. There is lots of work ahead to become proficient and confident at this.

Thanks for your comment! I wonder what would happen if you went back to this in two weeks? It would be an interesting experiment.

I'm really enjoying learning about lip reading, it's something that I've always done I just didn't know how I was doing it, I've always had problems with my hearing but never had it checked, I went to see an audiologist who noticed right away what I was doing, it turns out that I've got an Auditory processing disorder, i waited until I was 56 to find this out!

So glad you went to an audiologist to get this checked out, Patrick! Have you seen Angela Alexander's TED Talk? She is an audiologist with APD. The link is www.ted.com/talks/angela_loucks_alexander_escaping_the_hidden_prison_of_auditory_processing_disorder?

Oh wow! I watched the TED talk on APD thank you so much for sending the link, I found it really relatable and informative. Once again thank you! I think I'll send the link to our family group chat which might go some way to explaining APD to them 🙂

Thank you. It’s 28 June 2024. I wear hearing aids but am seeing someone next week about a cochlear implant. I’m learning as much as I can before I see him. Are there any questions I should ask or things to be aware of?
@HEARa

That’s exciting! If you Google “Questions to ask about Cochlear Implants” there’s a lot of great information. In particular the ones from UCSF Health and the cochlear implant companies (Advanced Bionics, Cochlear, and Med El). If you are a candidate and have to choose between devices, ask the audiologist to point you towards a way to talk to cochlear implant recipients who have the same hearing health history as you with each company.
