I went through this struggle a while ago and found the "Gartpot" batteries on Amazon fit most of my Tamiya's. They're the right length, plus the wires and balance leads come out of the center of the pack.
That is Really good to know Brother. I am constantly checking dimensions of batteries before I buy them. I also put spacers between the bottom brackets on the Pumpkin chassis.
Thanks for the tips. I just got into the hobby, and I do love the tamiya kits. In my limited RC/tamiya experience, I found that it was harder to find the right length Lipos for my Wild one. So far, I have found oval lipos that fit most of the tamiyas but not the buggy. 13.5mm.
@@nighthawkj30A4 you do you man! I've seen some guys get stressed about the mod weakening the chassis, but I gotta tell ya, after 5 years, mine is just fine! 👊
The lipo was a wee bit longer in the M05 chassis, but it fit. The wires caused the body to fan out. Great video bud, keep up the great work. I like the shirt btw!
I am still using Nihm but not say one day I won't go Lipo. Good information 👍🏼 Mate, that Sledgehammer video was one of my all time favourite running videos. Watched it several times and I have it saved 👊🏼
@@DustyFingersRC yeah dude, I loved that show as a kid! The cop with the big gun, right? Had a bit of a comedic twist in it. My mom and I watched it back in the 80's!
For the HotShot, SuperShot, Boomerang, Super Sabre, etc Tamiya made an extended battery holder to allow for the bigger 8.4 nimh batteries. It is part number 50296
I see where you're going with this... Hahaha. But hey, keep scrolling through my vids, and you'll see I've upgraded my Sand Scorcher chassis and it'll now accept this battery! Lol! 😆
Thanks, great video it was so helpful. I have that traxxas sledgehammer, also a blackfoot, mobster beetle all original. My question is, will it fit my new GF-02 Squash van? Thank you
I don't own a Super Blackfoot, so I can't say with 100% confidence, but I do own a regular Blackfoot and they share the ORV chassis and this battery fits nicely in that application. My gut says it'll fit the Super Blackfoot no prob. 👊
cut the plastic of the battery where the cable come out, fill the cut area with silicone and you are ok. i did that on my m01 tamiya i have video converting a m01 to 2s lipo battery
@@poorboysrc thanks for trying sir. I've been wanting a Hornet lately but that is kind of a deal breaker. I've got 2s hard packs fitting in my frog and blackfoot.
Answer is really easy. Just use a shorty battery and if needed a little foam padding to stop the battery moving around in the battery compartment. I've found reedy wolfpack 2 S lipo is 95 mm long and slim enough to fit , plus gens ace make a redline 2 S lipo that is 95 mm long and fits plus it's 130C discharge rate . And NXE battery's make a shorty lipo 2 S battery that fits also. Plus many others , you just need to look around. Most of these batteries use bullet connectors on battery which changes to deans plug ate end of battery cable where it connects to ESC. And on an open type bathtub chassis that's not going to be a problem. Quite a performance boost over nickel metal hydride batteries and the runtime is hugely increased. Nickel metal hydride batteries might give 5-8 minutes running time on a charge and that's pretty much a waste or time and money when recharging the nickel metal hydride battery. Like paying for expensive electricity for a battery that only lasts 5 minutes. I get over 30 minutes run time on my Super Hot Shot with Tamiya super stock RZ motor running a 2 S 4500C nvision lipo battery.the car gives 44-45 kmh or 26 mph. The nvision battery is 138mm long and won't fit rerelease Tamiya Hornet or Grasshopper. And when I switched back to nickel metal hydride just to compare the difference the nickel metal gave me 5 minutes then was dead. 👎 Screw nickel metal hydride batteries. Go lipo for sure 1000% you won't regret it 👌💪👍 the Hornet battery compartment is 136mm + or - 1mm long x 50mm wide x 25mm high. Just find a battery that fits these dimensions.
I bought a LIPO from Venom that fits Tamiya kits. I never measured it but it has fit every Tamiya kit that I have. Now for the bad news. Venom is going out of business, so this battery will be hard to get now. I will now find another LIPO battery. Thoughts?
I had the same Venom pack years ago and it was perfect! Until it puffed... lol! And they don't make them anymore... too bad. These are the best bang for the buck I could find!
I must say that when you are looking for a LiPo battery with a Tamiya connector there is far less choice. I am still running NiMH on my Tamiya cars and indeed even on my latest crawler, a Cross-RC AT4V, I have stuck with a NiMH battery simply to get compatibility of equipment across my RC collection. It is such a pain to have lots of different connectors, especially when you have a collection with multiple different RC car brands. Call me old fashioned but a high spec NiMH battery still works for me in most applications. Having said that, I am really tempted to use a LiPo on the AT4V as it is a good spec truck, what do you think?
I think you should try lipo out, the power difference is really outstanding and the larger battery capacities are great in certain rigs. I tried using a nimh to film my Traxxas Sledgehammer video a couple weeks ago and the lack of power was numbing. I've become so accustomed to lipo power it's hard to go back. Give it a try, I think you'll love it.
Switching out the connector or getting a Tamiya to XT60 converter is not a big problem I've converted most of my stuff to XT60 and higher power stuff to XT90.
Thanks for commenting. I tried measuring the battery space on my 2012 Egress and it's really tough to measure... It's an odd way of mounting a battery in a chassis, kind of have to slide it beneath the upper deck and between two support posts. I couldn't get a good measurement, but I can say that a conventional 6-cell nimh pack fits with ease. I have a 4000mah 2S lipo shaped like a rounded nimh pack and it drops right in. My 5000mah hard case 2S lipos will not fit. My 4200mah 2S shorty lipo will fit. So basically any battery shaped like the old style round packs will drop right in. 👊
@@poorboysrc thanks for the reply man... So your 4200 rounded lipo is good? May I have the measurements please? I'll try to see what's available in my country. I will run lipo for sure.
Many of the vintage tamiya kits needs the weight of a nimh pack. I use nimh packs in all my vintage cars from Tamiya, HPI and Losi.. And a silvercan or other mild motors do not need a lipo in my opinion.
I just tried on my Grasshopper rere, and it's super tight. I bet you could squeeze it in there with a little more effort, but it's not coming back out easily, that's for sure! Hahaha! 👊🏼🍻
Pretty sure that kit comes with the TBLE02S esc, which is lipo compatible. Only issue is that it doesn't have low voltage detection, so you'll need to either run a separate voltage detector with alarm, or ( do what I do) and as the performance starts to drop a little, I remove the battery and put in a fresh one. 👊
Unfortunately I don't have a TA03 chassis to try it on. 😭 I can say that this battery is just slightly wider than a standard 7.2v nimh pack. So if you have a little wiggle room in your TA03, you should be good.
I do have a Manta Ray, just tried it and it does fit but it's EXTREMELY tight! And the length of the battery prohibits the use of the Manta Ray's battery holder (little plastic piece held in with a body clip). But it fits so tight, I don't see it ever falling out, I had to fight to remove it. 👊
