Greetings my Excellent friends! And welcome to my channel. I'm an old skool RC addict building, running, modifying, and painting RC cars, trucks, and buggies. I'm a total Tamiya and Kyosho fan, given that I grew up in the 80's and 90's, during the glory days of RC!
I chose the name "Poor Boys RC" as a bit of an homage to the good ol' days, when I was a poor boy, and many of us couldn't afford these amazing kits that we saw in magazines, in stores, and on TV. Well patience is a virtue, and now in my 40's I'm able to enjoy these kits, create fun content for other like-minded RC enthusiasts and try and recreate the experience of RC back in the 80's and 90's.
Stick around, soak up some nostalgia and enjoy the ride. And as always... Be Excellent to Each Other.
I know this is an old video but I've just built the 2024 re re. Absolutely love this car. You get a fair bit for your money and with a couple for cheap upgrades it's a solid chassis.
@@poorboysrc yeah did that as the motor mount is cheese. Also did the prop Shaft.. Got rid of the metal gear parts for the extra speed plastic ones. Also did the front ujs. Also added the Topforce undertay 👍
@@markgreenhalgh8344 oh sweet! Great mods! If you haven't yet, check out my Top Force in Action video. I dropped it a couple weeks ago, I think you'll like it!
Damn that's some bad luck. Sorry brother. Is it possible you might have some fault in either the front or rear differential? Possibly some tiny pieces of nylon plastic that maybe you missed when cutting off from the parts tree sprue? I get pedantic about that and not only cut them really finely but sometimes also shave that little tab with a blade or a file. Other things I have heard of is a guy in England saying the Nova Fox has a faulty rear gearbox/ differential. I brought a rerelease Nova Fox and never had that problem , but the guy in England said he had to buy a new gearbox differential housing and new diff gears. Just a thought . Anyway wish you the best. I was going to get a Super Sabre but opted for a Hot Shot 2 ( not block head , but the black 2024 version) instead. I'm quite a fan of the Hot Shot series of buggies from Tamiya. Good luck man 👍👌
Funny you say that, because I did not ice the front diff feels a little chunky. The tires don't rotate as freely as they should.im gonna get it apart today and take a closer look at it. 👊🏼
Blimey mate, carry on at this rate and you really will be a 'poor boy'!!!!! 😂 That's an expensive day, made even worse by the fact that you didn't even manage to get enough footage for the planned video. 😩 The RZ motor is salvageable, they are fully rebuildable, and I'm pretty sure that you can buy new rotors for them. You may also need to check the metal bushes at each end of the rotor shaft as well, these can seize, and I would highly recommend replacing them with proper bearings. As for the ESCs...... made in China no doubt! 🤷♂️ I've had many bad experiences with ebay special HW1060 knock offs, some are glitchy , some go up in magic blue smoke, and some don't work at all...... not worth it mate! I make sure to pay more now, from authorised dealers, those cheapies are false economy. Looking forward to the speed challenge dude..... better wake up Mr Hanky the speed run poo! 😂 💩 Your holiday looked awesome, those were some beautiful views fella..... and you even got some rc cars In to! 👍 👍 👍
That's some good advice, pal! I'll take a closer look at that motor and see if salvageable. I hope you're right. It's a shame throwing away $50 motors after 20 minutes of driving. Lol! 🤦
@@poorboysrc I've burnt out a few superstocks over the last few years matey, they do run very hot at the best of times, especially in Tamiya Monster Trucks..... But, Kudos for killing one in 20 minutes Sir!! 🙏 😂 One of the reasons that these are expensive is the fact that they are fully rebuildable. Just unclamp the two brush springs, remove the brushes, then undo the two screws on the bell end! 😂 Then carefully remove the metal plate inside and slide the rotor out (magnets are strong on these so takes a bit of force) I'm guessing the rotor will be fried. I know you can buy new rotors in this country from Tamiya retailers, not sure what the spares supply is like in Canada? I would advise removing the metal bushes in each end to and replacing with oiled bearings..... This gives you less resistance which means they run a bit cooler, more battery time, and more RPM for clearing beach log jumps!! 😂 Once you have the new rotor and bearings just reassemble, brushes should be fine as it's hardly had any use. You should be good to go buddy. We actually done a video on this over the winter for the channel, but the file corrupted and it never got released. 🤷♂️ Good luck Fil! 🤞 👍 👍 👍
@yodadarksideGreenHawksRC that's awesome advice, pal. I'll give it a whirl later today. I'm happy to hear these can be rebuilt. These motors look so nice, it'd be a shame to throw one away. I've had superb luck with the SS BZ, it was my go-to motor for some time.
@@poorboysrc Oh yeah man, I love me a superstock! And those shiny bell ends are delightful! 😂 They are my weapon of choice in most of my vintage Tamiyas..... The perfect balance between speed, acceleration and battery life..... at the same time as not being too harsh on the vintage gearboxes! Think I have four RZ, two BZ,, and one TZ. Hope you manage to save yours mate. Need to contact Mr Hankey, and tell him it's speed challenge time again soon...... he's gone off the rails a bit over the winter, I think the fame of being on RU-vid went to his head last year. This new challenge may well be what he needs to get him back on track!! 😂 💩 👍 👍 👍
I had the G1 Traxxas hawk had a blast with that car back in the day. Went through a lot of chassis they cracked up in the front near the steering all the time I even accidentally warped one trying to dye it on the stove lol Love the Transformers throwback commercial, dude !
Hey Fil. Ooh buy cheap buy twice with those ESC's. Mind you 3s! 🤨 Anyway glad to hear of your family adventures. Looking forward to the speed run challenge this year. You might need a bigger white board! Best wishes mate 😁👍👍
Yeah I was tempted by the $17 price tag, and look where it got me... 🤦 Ah well, onward and upward! Hope to see you catching big air again in the 2024 SRC. 🤣👊🏼
Nice place there in BC 👀🐻 I thought for a moment there you were going to send the Land Rover down the hang glider path 😂 Too bad about your Super Sabre, maybe stick to HW 1060 from now 😉😄
Fil wonderful memories from that holiday mate looked epic! Now back to RC and boy that was a fun time you had lol it does go that way sometimes and things just don't go to plan! A light brushless system for the Sabre next trip will do the job👍 Great stuff buddy.
Great update. Hope you get the Sabre fixed. I'm guessing there must be something inside the gears jammed. The hot silver can is the best indicator for it. Looking forward for the 15th of July. Have a great weekend Fil
Nice one, Fil! Looks like a really nice adventure, that trip you went on, I love the mountains myself, and who doesn't love a bit of 4x4'ing? I'm excited about the speedrun challenge, and of course looking forward to watch your Axialfest stuff. Like you said, so much crawler content, I prefer watching your retro/vintage Tamiya videos. Bummer with those ESC's, in the bin! About the receiver, I'd be interested to know how you manage. I have a couple with broken wire antennae, might use them in micro crawlers, or something... Or I might research replacing the antenna itself, I just saw Amazon was suggesting I buy some the other day, haven't done it yet, he he...
I have run 12t stock motors on 4s lipos in a clodbuster and yes iv had them smoking and burnt out many of them. but hey it was stupid fast for while at least
Hey mate. If you're burning out 2 motors I'd look at the buggy. How free is the drive train without the motor hooked up? And then check the gear mesh, make sure you're running the motor in the correct position for the teeth on the pinion, if that's all good, drop a couple of teeth on the pinion to save the motor. Your channel is rad, thanks for the positivity you put out to the world in all your videos
Yeah, I think there's some binding up front. I'm gonna get it apart today and have a closer look. Thanks for the kind message, it's always nice to get these. Positivity is the name of the game. Hope you have an excellent day! 👍🏻
Don't try to fix the coax receiver cable, you can buy replacements, they are cheap. I think I have spares, let me know and I can send you some. Open the receiver up, it should just pop off the coax connector on the board. I can't believe how much trouble you had with electronics in one day...that's crazy.
It was a rough one, pal. Worst I've had in some time... I'll look into those replacement antennas. I'd hate to have to throw away a receiver for that. 😳
Nice trip you had, looked a bit like Switzerland, 100x bigger 😊 Poor Super Sabre, wasn't his day 😢 And yeah, another speed challenge 👏 Can't wait. And what a beautiful Traxxas, much better looking than the current one 😮 Take care 🤝
As far as your receiver antenna, the wire is coax. If you look at the wire, you should see about an inch or so of bare wire at the end. Strip off the remaining wire to expose the same amount of bare wire and you should be good to go. But, range test it after! The actual receiving part on a 2.4 ghz frequency is the bare part. You just won't have as long of an antenna wire, though. I'd go into radio theory of why, but it's boring and I can't remember all the mathematics involved pertaining to it. 2.4ghz short antennas is why some receivers don't need an "aerial", but have just a bare trace on the receiver board that is about an inch long. Notice, some transmitters don't have antennas that stick up, they just have a butterfly shaped dipole inside on the pcb. I'll be quiet now! (add, after all this I see someone said the same thing earlier. I'm an idiot.)
Good stuff, pal. So how do I re-attach the wire? Or are you saying that I don't re-attach it? I just strip off some of the outer coating on the piece that's still hooked up to the receiver? 🤔
Wow nice holiday Fil!! Looking forward to seeing more videos 👌 I've just burned out a torque tuned motor and standard silver can 🤷 no idea how or why 🤦 never had any issues before 🤯 i was gutted 🤣 so you must have been well gutted going through All that electronic expense 😞🤣 have you got a blazing blazer??? See you soon 😊
Sorry to hear all your troubles. Just to share, you can salvage the receiver wire. You need to strip the remaining wire of its coating and have the exposed antenna the exact same length as before. 👌
Man, I would have been so frustrated with all the failures! Hopefully it is good to go now and no more smoke shows! I am glad you guys had such a good time on your trip, it looked terrific! The Traxxas truck was a great score and it looks amazing! Looking forward to seeing what else you managed to pick up as well! Take care Fil and looking forward to seeing what this years challenge platform will be!
Yeah buddy, it was a frustrating day! Add to that, I left my GoPro on the beach amidst the chaos! I didn't realize until I got home. Thank the RC God's it was still there when I got back. 🙏
@@poorboysrc oh man, now that would have ruined everything!! Some cheap ESCs and some motors was already bad enough but to lose a GoPro would have been awful! Laughable now but I am sure it was a high blood pressure day for sure!!
@@Hillbillypunk well stay tuned, you might just see that in the future. These commercial breaks are fun, and it's been well received. I think we'll see more of them in the future. 😁
You can "fix" those antennas. They are different because they are a coax cable. The active part of the antenna is only the very end where the shield has been stripped back. The rest is shielded. Measure the length of the original end that was stripped back from the factory and carefully reproduce it with what remains on the receiver (if it is still long enough). Practice on the broken off scrap if you have not worked with coax before. You want to strip the outer insulation and the braid shield wire, but leave the inner insulation intact.
Was that a Traxxas Haux Tuah??? Love the commercial break Fil!! Sorry to hear about all those motors and ESCs going up in flames pal. Glad you had a good vacation and inspiring the next generation of RC legends 🙌🏻 SPEED RUN BABY 🔥🔥🔥
I am totally out of the loop spend too much time on the road. I’m gonna have to figure out what this Haux Tah thing is,. Guessing it’s political? i’ll keep politics off of Fil’s page
@shannonnufer I didn't know what it was, either. Hahaha. I thought Craig was doing an accent or something. But my fb is full of the Haux Tuah memes now. Haha.
