I don't know why this channel has so few views. It's one of the best home building/improvement channels on RU-vid and the production quality is very high. I don't know why your videos haven't been picked up by the algorithm and getting 10s-100s of thousands of views. Just thought you would know some appreciate all the effort you put into your videos!

If you can get a customer to pay you for the time and materials to do this great. Find them and do it. But most people will not pay for arts and crafts hours when tape works. Just saying, not complaining.

I know it’s for product placement and there’s nothing wrong with that especially if the brand gives you a good deal on their products. However a cheaper method and still a good one would be to: 1. Buck out the opening with the Zip Paneling instead of the advantech. Zip is cheaper. 2. Either liquid apply the seams/joints and nails or use zip tape. This option is more budget friendly compared to the one shown. Both work and are great.
@ProTradeCraft
@ProTradeCraft Год назад
He did not buck out the openings with Advantech because Huber sponsored the video series, he used the 3/4 inch material because he wanted stiffer window frames. (There was a boatload of ZIP sheathing on site as well).

I've wondered how everyone is into renewable energy, why not pay attention to the energy we are loosing first.
@jimroth7927
@jimroth7927 4 года назад
True. We can sometimes save a lot of energy by doing very simple things, like making sure we have adequate air intake in our (unconditioned) attics, so the roof vents do not draw air from inside the house which will, in turn, draw outside air into the interior. Just an example.
@oggyreidmore
@oggyreidmore 4 года назад
@mister clean Wow, every part of your statement is wrong. "Renewable energy is worse for the environment than fossil fuels." No, they aren't. Fossil fuels increase atmospheric carbon dioxide, which creates a greenhouse effect and warms the planet - altering the climate, creating more extreme weather patterns, killing the jet stream, and destroying ecosystems. Renewable energy does not do this. "Air power kills more birds a year than anything else already" Buildings with glass windows kill about 100 times as many birds as wind turbines. And if you want to be technical, chicken farming kills 1000 times more birds than that... "solar panels wear and out and you can't go burying heavy metals in the soil or you'll poison everything" Coal ash also contains heavy metals and coal power produces orders of magnitude more waste than solar panels. Solar thermal power produces no waste and can be completely recycled when use is finished. "Water power destroys ecosystems." Unlike the chemical changes fossil fuels make, an ecosystem can adapt to the physical changes of building a dam or the physical addition of a wave turbine. Which do you think your body could adapt better to, a wall between you and food, or a different atmosphere? "Fusion and fission efficiency are where we should be aimed." If you were concerned about solar panels creating poison waste, why on earth would you want to create waste that is both poison AND radioactive? Besides, we already have a fusion reactor that can supply all of our energy needs. It's called the sun.
@oggyreidmore
@oggyreidmore 4 года назад
@mister clean The entire planet uses about 21 billion megawatts of power per year. If you used solar panels that are 10% efficient (which would be awful quality. Cheap panels get 15-18%, and top of the line get 20%+ efficiency) you could generate that much power with 200,000 square miles of space. The United States is 3.8 million square miles. That means you could power the entire planet with only 5% of the space of the United States. To put that in perspective, that's less space than is already being taken up by buildings in the US. And this is assuming you only use solar panels for renewable energy. This doesn't factor in wind, tidal power, geothermal, or biomass. It also assumes that no buildings are constructed or retrofitted to be more energy efficient, but rather stay as they are now. And that is without expanding hydropower or adding nuclear. So wrong again. You are WAY off.
@oggyreidmore
@oggyreidmore 4 года назад
@mister clean How much would it cost to build the 1.4 billion automobiles that are currently in the world? OMG are there even enough raw materials on the planet for such a huge undertaking? And what about the millions of miles of roads and bridges and parking lots and infrastructure needed for such things - not to mention the hundreds of thousands of fueling stations we'd have to set up, and the extraction and refinery systems we'd have to build just to make the fuel in the first place? It's impossible! There's not enough money in the world. And just think of how this will devastate the horse breeding industry. Better stick to riding horses... That was literally the argument against cars in the late 1880s, yet look at us now... It's amazing what humanity can do when we want to get it done. If all you can do is make excuses for why something can never happen, then it will never happen. There are plenty of materials to make as many solar panels and storage batteries necessary to run the entire planet indefinitely. And again, that assumes the ONLY solution you embrace is solar PV panels. There are lots of renewable energy sources that do not produce greenhouse gases and don't involve PV panels or lithium batteries at all. That also assumes we do nothing about energy efficiency to drive down the amount of energy we need in the first place before we even bother with the energy source. The figures I mentioned before is to power the system as it is today - not if it were optimized to use far less power.
@oggyreidmore
@oggyreidmore 4 года назад
@mister clean But cars aren't just made of iron and steel. What about the platinum or the palladium in the catalytic converters? What about the gold in the electronics? What about the neodymium in the alternator? It's true, Lithium is rarer than Iron and steel, but not so rare that we can't have grid level storage. Also, one of the reasons lithium is rare is because we haven't really been exploiting it commercially that long. Iron has been commercially important for over 2500 years. The technology for lithium ion batteries was invented in 1970, but have only been commercially viable since 1985, and really only saw mass production in the late 1990s. So the scramble to find sources is only 20 years old, with veins of lithium ore popping up all over the world and mining interests popping up accordingly. But even if you think lithium is too rare (which it's not), magnesium, tin, and antimony are not. Those are the components of a magnesium ion battery, which can be produced cheaply and scaled to grid level storage. Granted the technology has only been around since 2009, but it's not a theoretical thing. There are actual working units and a company already producing them. It's only a matter of time before grid scale renewable storage systems become commonplace. If we gave the same dollar amount in subsidies to these ventures as we did oil companies, we'd already have them in place everywhere to help balance the load for coal and natural gas power plants. But again, this all assumes that the only way you envision storing energy is with electricity. There are lots of ways to store energy. Biogas can be stored in tanks the way propane is stored. Solar thermal and geothermal can be stored in molten salt or hot glycerol. Tidal power is stored inside sea walls or water towers. There are lots of options.

I tend to agree, but would probably use tape at least for the first few windows until I got the hang of it... would help as a visual guide to not over or under apply this gunk. I'm guessing it's expensive, but has a minimum overlap onto the wall exterior.
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb 4 года назад
@@defenda1Not very difficult to master how much to use. For exposed areas like concrete to sill/sheathing I'd use tape because that would be visible. But under siding, nobody cares. Can just make a few pencil marks around rough openings to give guide. Can find much less expensive STPE liquid flashing sealants than what Zip sells. Henry/Fortifiber sell Moistop - seen it at $8.50/20 oz sausage from SouthernCarlson. BASF MasterSeal NP 150 for $10.50/20 oz sausage from S&S Sales. Henry and BASF are big companies and have economies of scale that Huber can't match. Read Zip resells Prosoco as their own but in black, so that's why it's ~2-3x more expensive - markup on top of markup promoted by paid "building science" influencers.

Exactly, the best application I've seen for this kind of product is when you want to flash where the wall sheathing meets the concrete slab, or you're flashing where a roof meets a wall behind the tail of the rafters. Taping a window is just easier but the liquid flashing does have a few nice uses.

Thank you for the great video. I have a question that I can't seem to get an answer for. Using liquid flash on the top and bottom of the 2 x 4s makes sense to me, but, why use liquid flash on the sides (vertical) 2 x 4s? Once the window gets set won't it all be sealed around the nailing flanges anyways? Plus when the window is sealed from the inside with either spray foam or "Air Dam" won't that add even more protection? I really love your video and I am not a hater. Just trying to learn because I will be doing this to my house and the windows are showing up soon. I know everyone online does it this way but WHY use liquid flash on the vertical 2 x 4s if the nailing flanges will also be liquid flashed?? Thank you!

You didn't really explain anything. There is no loss of square footage on new construction- if the customer wants a 12x12 room, they get a 12x12 room. It's the outside footprint that grows with this type of framing, if the customer requests certain room dimensions. And cost? The subject here is a 12-inch thick wall. Two 2x4's is still cheaper than one 2x12. And being that the inner and outer wall studs do not touch, there is no loss through the stud as with conventional framing.

Well a couple of comments.... What’s with the church organ music? The liquid stuff seems good but basically seems like caulking in a tube… Which is OK, however it’s so darn thick and it’s taking him forever to apply to the surface...whereas maybe if it was more liquidy you could put it in the area a lot quicker. Which makes sense because a master carpenter is quite pricey when you look at the amount of time it took him to lay that out. Also since it’s in small tubes it’s pricey. If it was more in a block like a box of drywall mud it seems like you could save a lot of time/money. And if it was more liquid you could lay it out quicker and save even more money. However the price of the gooo would need to come down considerably. Also what kind of fumes does this stuff giving off? Is it poisonous? Obviously this guy is outside on the application but still… And then the blue painters tape I’ve always found to be quite pricey. So in summation… It’s basically Henry’s that he’s putting on there… To seal up a window. So working with those points that I raised… If those could be dealt with and minimized then; yes, it would be much better to have A window glued into place for sealing against wind,Rain and weather.

So there's no sealant on top of the flange of the window (on top and sides)? I don't understand how this doesn't stop water from getting in the top behind the flange. If it truly seals against the window somehow, then you've got a problem at the bottom not letting water leak out (from the angled sill).

@@cyoungso What minimum and maximum temperature you need for installing. And look like is really time consuming. In Boston most plywoods it's painting with waterproof . It's like rubber membrane that micro movement on all structures not making cracks and every nails shut in siding is sealed

The tape is a acrylic based polymer adhesive. It cures, but never 'dries out' or cracks.still vulnerable to UV so make sure to cover it up! The liquid flash is something call STPE or something. Very similar chemistry to the adhesive used to attach car windshields in their frames. STRONG stuff and cures with water!

Will tar paper, or modern equivalent, go on the outside wall? If so, it might be good to have the paper under and beside the window opening be overlapped by the liquid flashing, so water can not get under the paper?

It looks like this sheathing has an incorporated water resistant surface, as the inside of it looks like OSB Might be the “brand partner” Huber engineered woods the credits mention... Hopefully someone will correct me, and provide useful info, if I am guessing wrong. I like the taped seam system for air infiltration on regular OSB, but LOVE the idea of not having to do tar paper or other barrier over the sheathing.

I think this is their wall sheathing with integrated exterior “envelope” and seam tape, part of the ZIP system apparently... www.huberwood.com/zipsystem/products/zip-system-wall

@mister clean I think he means: how does liquid flash hold up to screws and other penetrations: does it reliably self-seal, as some tape flashings are meant to?

What's the story with the 4' thick walls?
@TheREALJosephTurner
@TheREALJosephTurner 4 года назад
It's only 12 inches, but the idea is the ability to install more insulation, thus raising the R-value substantially.

I think it is also to provide a thermal break between the inner and outer walls. If the inner wall studs are not connected to the outer wall studs they cannot transfer heat and cold in and out...

@@joshuat7171 Framing is a trade for nail guns ...... There is ZERO need for screws when framing houses except maybe hurricane clips or something , but attaching OSB ??? Hale no , you pow pow pow nail it , done ..... The owner of this house must have a LOT of money to pay for all this nitpicking stuff they're doing in the video ..... TAR ??? AROUND WINDOWS ?????? Ridiculous ...... Double walls ???? Good grief this is some overkill .... I'd just frame 2x6 walls and be done ....... you can insulate the hell out of 2x6 walls + add 3/4 " foamboard outside , hell that would be like an ice chest insulation ...... Can you imagine your house catching on fire and you have TAR around all your windows ???? Ya that would be a problem
@ronh9384
@ronh9384 4 года назад
Actually that sheathing system is designed in such a way that you don’t want the nails to over penetrate. And on the edge there around a window opening it is better to set the pressure so the nails set a little proud and then hammer them to their proper depth. If your nails over penetrate you have to either tape them or use their liquid flashing on them. Nails are better than screws in this situation because they have a little bit of give for wood expansion and contraction. Screws are less likely to allow for expansion and contraction.
@shure46
@shure46 4 года назад
@@ronh9384 that OSB is going to be sheetrocked or finish plywooded over ..... a "set nail" is NOT going to be a problem ...... you are attaching plywood in "rough framing" , not building a piano , and they tarred over the OSB plywood anyway !!!!! The only nails you hit with a hammer in framing are nails that didn't set with the gun
@shure46
@shure46 4 года назад
@mister clean if you're that anal about the "bonded resin layer" then you should spray it on after the plywood is installed instead of hand nailing plywood when you have nail guns .... you want a good seal ??? Spray the resin on after installation and you'll REALLY seal everything in , nails and all ..... hand tapping every nail is nuts and slow .... This entire home building technique is nuts and slow and very expensive .... if you have buttloads of money , fine , go for it ... who cares , but this technique will save $100 a month in energy and add $100 a month to the mortgage payment ....

A lot of extra work considering that todays window are sealed very well. If you worrying about laps apply a little sealant and as always it is inly as good as the installer that is using the product, easy to just call it good
