One of the many standout performances by the incomparable Lisa Fischer at this years Proms - Nina tribute. I hope it stays up for a while, and more people see her talent!
There is such a huge difference between singers with great voices, which are really a dime a dozen. and then there are vocalists whose voices are like musical instruments, whose user finds a way to take that vocal ability to a new level. That is Lisa Fischer.
Lisa Fischer can sing virtually all genres----all with breathtaking interpretations and stunning vocals covering deep lows and soaring highs. She has a powerhouse voice for those songs that require it, yet an ability to use a quiet sophistication to build into certain songs and then pour out her talent into breathtaking finales. And to top it off, Lisa is a true performer who commands the stage and draws in her crowd with her voice, physical movement and expressions perfectly matched with her song renditions.
Dido’s Lament reveals a talent and skill I’ve never encountered before. Lisa uses both jazz and classical tecnique seemlessly in one song and it works. Shocking maybe to both jazz and classical purists but astonishinly effective. We can only hope, given the recording industry appears to pretend she doesn’t exist, that she takes on vocal pupils in her retirement.
I've seen your comments on a few videos, and I must say that although they acknowledge her talents in true ways, the way you see & describe her talent - continually framing it in the classical - is really only a singular description. As one of THE most practiced, Grammy winning vocalists in popular music (primarily), your desire to continually seat her in styles you believe have more prestige or 'codified technique,' actually does her talent and career path a disservice. She has one, amazing vocal instrument that is incredibly versatile. You might try to credit her stint in classical training for that, but its giving credit where credit isn't due. Music existed before theory; classical music isn't the center of human vocal instrumentation. Her mastery across styles is the talent, not the way she applies the classical technique to those other styles. That assessment is merely your opinion.
She has no ‘classical technique’ to be honest. She is singing a ‘classical European’ piece using R&B and Jazz styling. She is making it her own. But that is all.
I am an avid fan of the trinity of vocals, celine dion, Mariah and Whitney but I tell you this, this is the first time I watch Lisa and no one can ever do it like her. I even watched her how can I ease the pain, she can definitely stand among the divas
I'm also a lover and respecter of the Vocal Trinity of Whitney, Mariah and Celine esp Whitney. However, having seen Lisa Fischer in concert back in the 1980's as Luther Vandross' back up singer, I've always thought it should be renamed the Vocal Quartet with Lisa's inclusion.
@@Sttephy30 Whitney Houston didn't need Classical Training. She already had IT aged 19. She was trained by her mother, Cissy Houston, a Gospel Music legend and former member of The Sweet Inspirations who sang with Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin and on all of Luther Vandross' albums. Unfortunately, Whitney Houston was a heavy smoker and had other issues which contributed to her losing her singing voice.
Yes well said uploaded this for that reason, her talent needs to be shared! I can only confirm your statement, I was in London for the proms and this single performance stood out among out all the proms I went to. The atmosphere in the hall after this performance was something else, people were in tears!
@@CodebladeWielder006 I got to work at the Proms last season and seeing this in an empty hall during the rehearsal at lunch moved me to complete tears . Always come back to this clip so thanks so much for uploading !
@@CodebladeWielder006in a live podcast with Ledisi, who also sang at this Proms tribute to Nina Simone, Lisa Fischer said that she was singing to her mother who passed away when Lisa was 17.
From 5:20 - 6:00 is an entire moment. Lisa MASTERS this control. I felt EVERY MOMENT. It’s unearthly sometimes hearing her (and Ledisi) sing! Whew ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I can't believe she sang Dido's Lament like this. I never thought it could move me more than how it was written originally. This is so beautiful. Bravo. My heart is full for performing one of my favorite Arias in the most unexpected way. I'm like Ledisi....shaken my head blown away by the Brilliance and emotional gravitas of her performance. ❤️
I am a proud classical music snob, but this was a very fine and musical performance. Even the impossible coupling of Gershwin and Purcell worked splendidly.
I heard/saw Lisa and Grand Baton on the 15 of Feb 2019 in Stockholm, and the song that got the deepest soulful reaction from the audience I would say was " Dido´s Lament "; its such a good song, I have reacted very positively on that song since many years back and I love that Lisa have picked it up. I think she did it publicly the first time in Tbilsi, Georgia on the Golden Wave Awards 2018 with a big orchestra where she was a honored guest.
The incomparable Mr. Quincy Jones once wrote, "What good is a song if it don't move you..." Oh Ms. Fisher, you took me to church. Your skill and musicianship are other worldly. This is one of the most moving musical experiences I have ever had. You have made believers out of nonbelievers. Ms. Lisa Fisher, you gave me life. Thank you.
This song is so poignant. it's saying when I pass, may my wrongs create no trouble to the living. Remember me, but my fate if it impacted you negatively. Profound.
@@CodebladeWielder006 Phyllis left some body of work and appeared with McCoy Tyner, Grover Washington Junior and on Norman Connors albums among others, too.
Whitney Huston also sang I loves you porgy, Ella Fitgerald sang it too', but hers is a slighly different vergion of it. BUT NO ONE HAS EVER LAID IT OUT LIKE LISA!!
Gawd she only gets better with time. I 💜 Whitney’s’94 AMA version & how she did it and Lisa’s is every bit as insanely amazing. I will never understand how Tommy & Mariah (along w/Sony’s unlimited coffers) taught an entire generation to believe an awful, untrained, inexperienced karaoke style singer was the vocal standard. Thank you, Lisa!!!!!
Lisa Fischer sang background vocals on several Luther Vandross albums and accompanied him on tour. After one successful album, for which she received a Grammy for the song 'How Can I Ease the Pain', she decided to retreat away from the limelight. Lisa Fischer is well known and much sought after among Jazz, R&B Musicians - watch the film '20 Feet from Stardom' which features Background Vocalists.
"When I am laid Am laid in earth May my wrongs create No trouble No trouble In thy breast When I am laid Am laid in earth May my wrongs create No trouble No trouble In thy breast Remember me (remember me) Remember me (remember me) But ah Forget my fate" Its in English
