I played Nancy in a production of "Oliver" in 2003. This song, "As Long As He Needs Me" occurs just after Nancy is struck in the face by her thieving, thug boyfriend, Bill.
I keep coming back to this video! It's such an emotional and heartfelt performance of this beautiful song! Her voice and acting are incredible. This is Broadway talent.
omg lisa!.......What an AMAZING voice you have! I've seen Oliver countless times on video and next to Shani Wallis that was the BEST rendition of this song that I've ever heard. Well done!!!
So here's the funny thing. I saw this video ages ago and loved it. Then, I worked with the lovely and talented Ms. Fishman and now I love her. Go figure that in looking her up online, I discover that she is, in fact, the brilliant performer from this video. Isn't life funny? LOVE YOU FISH!!!! Adam
you are really good at this:: i have watched all of your videos on your oliver performance to help me with mine:: i hope i could get close to being this good lol =] bravo
I suspect this vocal rendition is based on the original stage Nancy (B4 the movie) Georgia Brown. I dont like affectation in songs. Those bad glottal stops and unneccessary affectations that just make the song go from tragic to dreadful...but, in this instance it kinda works. Its Raw, untamed, and powerful whilst not being as OTT with the acting and protestations as Georgia Brown was. The thing that actresses seem to forget when playing Nancy or even a role like Grizabella is that the emotion should be lead by the characters inner monologue and physicality, not just being swept along by the music and tbe fact that it happens to crescendo at certain points. Doing that only makes the character a 'BRAND' Not a flesh and blood human with real feelings and emotions. This is one of those songs that can cause an actress to step too far over the line I think sometimes, thus rendering the trauma unbelievable.
amazing! set and actress!!! i am doing oliver tonight (iam mr sowerberry) for 4 shows we are doing it in a proper theatre, but our set is smaller, that one is amazing, also she has an amazing voice!!! where was this shown at?
@muzikbeauty She asks him if he loves her and he answers that of course he does, he lives with her doesn't he. In the original script he should answer "of course I do, I fuck you don't I?" Our director loved that cruelty in Bill, so he put that in
@muzikbeauty no, they're just living together. =] being the "dregs" of society, it wouldn't make sense for them to be in a holy marriage.... that's how lower class london worked for the most part during the industrial revolution. hope that answered the question
