The next chapter of LISA comes in the form of a fangame, LISA the POINTLESS. Get the game here: gamejolt.com/ga... SOCIAL MEDIA / nitroradofficial / nitrorad
As a Lithuanian who left my country, I intimately understand the garbage island metaphor. That aside, I'm still strangely proud to be from the same small country as the creator :^)
Way too late for this party but now that I’m completely invested in this series and fangame, I found a really neat detail regarding the flashback sequence! So in the present day, Alex is exactly like Brad, right? Martial artist, uses WASD combos, and uses the SP system for special moves. But during the flashback, Alex is using TP for his moves. It could be a subtle detail in that Alex’ moves aren’t connecting because he’s a novice using a very complex fighting style, (his aunt gave him the Grandmaster tape), so he’s not following the style correctly. Only once he’s old and forced to fight does he actually connect his moves and re-hone his skills. Again that’s a detail that seems like something straight out of LISA, using the gameplay itself to intricately tell a story. Absolutely love it!
Nice, but it's universally agreed (IIRC even by the developer in the Discord channel) that Alex's moves couldn't connect due to the other guy actually being a competent martial artist, while Alex is cocky and uses a bullshit style. This game contrasts to the original LISA in that it's about lame people fighting lame people, not strong competent survivors fighting actual treats. Even the joy mutants are softballs compared to the Painful.
I think the main reason Alex was missing in the flashback like that is also mostly because of the opponent's fighting style. He uses an Aikido stance, Aikido being a martial art focused around counters, joint locks, and essentially using your opponents weaknesses against themselves to throw them around. It's a great defence around Alex's striking focused moves, redirecting his attacks and using them to throw him to the ground, ending the match. It's not established what kind of tournament it is, I assume MMA, I'm not familiar with rules of things like this, but I imagine using something that isn't Kung Fu in a Kung Fu match is probably a no no and such. I don't think it's considered an illegal move here or else he would have been disqualified or something, so Alex really did lose for simply not being good enough, or cheating if you choose the groin kick.
If we're doing comment necro, I'll just point out as a member of the Pointless community that Alex's switch to an SP-based combo style has more to do with the fact that SP is more defensive while TP incentivizes dealing and taking damage and is thus more aggressive. Either due to being old, or due to being humbled by his big fight against Stan Curien, Alex switched his entire approach to his fighting style.
The game being harder is probably because Alex uses a fake martial art, Velvet Fu which he only saw 1 tape of it on repeat. Brad has been training and teaching Armstrong Style for most of his entire life.
@Bradley Harrison i like to think that as the chapters go on, Alex's style becomes a lot more pragmatic and reserved - that can already be seen with the shift from an advancing stance in his twentys to his receding stance of middle age. maybe something like sweeping the feet of enemies with a kick instead of the goat hoove maneuver. call it "burlap fu," or something
idk man the enemies they fought are legit dangerous ones like joy mutant chaz a warlord that can walk into the walls Silvester de Maistre and ofc cola can with hitler moustache
@@alperenakdas3479 Chaz was immobile, Silvester was a minor warlord who only knows basic fighting moves and relies on magic (which is defeated by a bottle) and the only reason Arnold is relatively hard is because he's armed and knows an actual martial art instead of making stuff up
Traditional story with genious writting, i mean, the one bullet, an insta-win, no matter how powerful your enemy is, and the guy who has it can't use it but in a fight *he could totally use it*
Zak The Dragon I dunno, I think it has to do that Taitoki got mad at some criticism some others said about the person's game concepts in one of the Discords.
Kudos on pronouncing Olathe correctly. EDIT: The flags of the German Democratic Republic and Soviet Union can be seen in the background of the martial arts tournament which sets this flashback anywhere from 197X to 1990. Also, I don't think Alex really has what you'd call "regular eyes," he's got a thousand-yard Stanley Kubrick stare (while Joel has a Jim Croce moustache).
@@robinmattheussen2395 Martial Arts really came into the popular consciousness in the 70's with the release of Enter the Dragon in theaters and I would take it that Alex became enamored with them by watching Kung Fu movies so it's most likely that the flashback sequence where he gets DQ'd at the tournament takes place during the late 80's.
I'm not really sure about the thousand-yard stare with Alex Whenever you face forward, he's not looking directly at the camera, and it comes off as awkward rather than per say Brad's sprite, which never even shows his eyes It's just my two cents: Alex has been through some shit, goes through some shit, but in the end, he can redeem himself.
@@thestranger4894 what about the truck of bodies?, the truck of bodies, hey cobalt, Joel's asking where the bodies come from?, do you know who killed them?, no?, how about you, sociophatic wastelander that just killed this guy at random in a place full of people like you?, where did those bodies come from?, who did this?
The game is very well made and gives back the feeling of LISA games perfectly. The fact that you have to choose your battles carefully also makes sense, neither Alex nor Joel are joy addicts (?) so it would make sense that they are not killing machines like Brad or Buddy. Story and gameplay integration was one of the best things LISA had to offer and this fangame follows that very well. The music also fits extremely well. I also really liked Joel's combat mechanics: original and related to the character which is also very LISA like. Obviously it requires some bug fixes and the difficulty should be tweaked so that players can explore all the content. There's a LOT of work put into this and it shows, so it would make sense to let people explore everything. I honestly think this could be made official since it doesn't interfere with the original canon (as far as I know). Great stuff I really hope this get developed further, if this was just a demo imagine what a full game would look like.
Alex and joel arent joy addicts but georgy is after getting to the desert he gets a joy withdrawl also he leaves the hotel room with the guy that gives you joy so that may sugest that he bought joy from him
Here's whats up in the bullets, I know you corected yourself in a later video, but here: Joel has the most powerful kind of gun in Olathe, and the bullets are VERY rare. with it, It's like a one-shot wonder, which is his class. He is almost garanteed a kill. Bullets for the gun are rare possibly due to the bullets being used excessively in the beginning, only to run out in a month or so and making the bullets EXTREMELY. RARE. This is why he only tried to use the gun once in the whole of chapter one.
The fact he mentioned Off and Space Funeral fan games makes me want to see him do videos on Home, Continue Stop Rise and Earthbirth. Like, I REALLY want to see those videos...
I keep hearing about LISA from everywhere now; Dunkey made a video on it, Cr1tikal's friend Andrew mentioned it on his podcast, and now there's a huge fan-game for it? Damn dude. Nice to see this game's getting the popularity it deserves.
Hey Nitro, just wanted to let you know I found your channel via youtube recommending Lisa videos, I ended up spending the next 5 hours watching your Silent Hill reviews, 3D Platformers, Rayman, Siren, and various Yume Nikki videos. I love your style, its just really calm and you like to bring up sources and try not to get too emotional, and thank you for giving Silent Hill Downpour some love. Keep it up man, I have no doubt your channel is just going to get bigger and bigger
I finally finished Lisa the Pointless after 5 years of being put off by the absurd difficulty. Accidentally fell off a plateau? Well I hope you enjoy doing the last five ball-busting fights all over again. Gameplay aside, I felt like Pointless is a very different piece stylistically when compared to Painful. The spritework is far more detailed, and that detail is used to make everything grimy as all hell. It honestly feels much more dismal and hopeless compared to Painful's frequent gags and whimsical moments. And that's another part of what makes it hard to get through, there's no break from the misery. Even the "funny" parts come across as despressing. In the end though, I'm glad to have finally finished the game. Although I nearly had a stroke from that one mutant who killed me with only 10 HP left.
I would say a boss, as i can imagine a Joy Mutant Nitro Rad, with any of the badass boss themes in the trilogy. And yes of course, Joy Mutant Nitro Rad would show his braces in a pretty messed up way!
It's too late to tell you, but i'm leaving this there for anyone else who stops by. It tries for emotion, but so far feels a lot less meaningful then painful or joyful.
i know i'm three years too late but it's definitely less emotionally investing and the stakes are considerably lower. in painful you're trying to protect the last chance humanity has, sacrificing everything you have just to do that for example, but in pointless you're just some guy trying to find somewhere that's not as terrible as everywhere else and sometimes you risk your life. the only really tragic thing that happens to alex is the martial arts tourney. while definitely relatable, it's not as crushing to the player as say brad's death in painful or the fight with brad in joyful, and i feel this is a very good example as to how emotional pointless's story so far is
If anyone is curious about getting the soundtrack, look up Taitoki on soundcloud. He's got songs from the Pointless spread out across multiple soundtracks. Most of the songs are from the multiple soundtracks he made for fangames that failed due to developer issues, so I'm really glad to see his talents get put to good use in this game.
or maybe he just accidentaly deleted the entire code for his new game and then went on a pointless rampage destroying everyone of his fans hopes for him
+Boxcar Boy From what I can tell, in the space of about 3 twitter threads, he : 1. Felt the notion of white guilt wasn't entirely unjustified. 2. Wouldn't identify himself being for white pride because he felt the idea itself was based in racism. 3. Justified those views in that he felt individualism was a very idealist worldview and that race unfortunately have defined social implications that people should take care to acknowledge. It was hardly what I'd call a meltdown, he actually delivered it and handled the arguments that came after all pretty lax. Even still let it serve as a reminder to us all posting your personal opinions on race or religion online is no way to make friends.
Eh. That seems a little lax. He hasn't played the game himself yet. There is a scene where Rick from the last game gets fucked up. Although it has little bearing on this games story. Things like that might not be accepted by Austin.
You should do a video on the chapter 2 when it comes out. If you watch the new intro you'll see Ed almost remade the whole thing, it looks like a thousand times better...
Lisa is by far one if my favorite rpg maker game, and i'll be honest, the ending to lisa had me shaking and numb, I just wanted the ending to be anything else then what happened, but it kept going with the ending. It felt like a slap in the face, and that is not a bad thing. If anything it's a good thing, it made me remember the game even more then I expected. Thank god extra credits does the "Games you may not of tried" series, otherwise I might not of heard of Lisa the painful rpg.
There was this abominably powerful combo that made the game super easy for me. Anaconda Virtue was a pushover in my experience, and if I remember correctly, it's Goat Kick + Hoof.
got good news for you there's a big ass update coming that revamps most if not all the sprites, new areas, parallaxes, music, assets, etc. etc. not much changes plot-wise, but it'll focus on polishing the shit out of ch1 so it can hold up to the upcoming ch2. the deadline is SUPPOSED to be september, tho i'd generally expect it sometime this year.
holy shit dude your acting during that bit about Joel's one unusable bullet is fuckin incredible. I can't stop thinking about Joel acting just like that.
I hope he finds out the expansion mod of this this game called Scholar of Wilbur Sin it adds more party members, secrets, and more save options to ease the difficulty
Thanks so much for making this video! Without it, I'd never know that there was a game to fill the empty hole in my life that was left after I played both LISA games! Keep making vids!
Man, thanks for telling me about this fan game. After LISA: The Hintful fell through, I just abandoned the hope for a LISA fan game to come out, but this looks great. I just hope they're able to get a Mac version out eventually.
I disagree but whatever, perhaps it's a worthless discussion because all of the people I've spoken to largely just whine about how popular Undertale is and never give any reason why they prefer LISA over it. Oh and memes, despite there being 2 memes in the game, and a bunch spawned from the game which makes sense since the internet loves it and likes to make memes. I'd be willing to have a proper discussion, but I've played both and you're not changing my mind.
Hey man, just discovered your channel today. I need to say i am impressed with the amount of effort and care you put in all the videos ive seen so far. It is rare for a small channel to put this much work into their videos and it is very refreshing and inspiring to see for other aspiring creators. You just earned a sub, i wish you the best of luck!
Hey nitro, a bit of fun fact, but I have the full ost of Lisa, and the song at 7:25 was actually composed by austin, before being scrapped in the final product. If you want specifics on the song, it's: Hernandez Ocean
Ive been saying it for years, fans should make direct sequels, especially if they care this much about em. I'm still waiting on an amazing fanmade MMX9
Currently it is unknown what will happen to the game. They announced the monster update to update the textures of the game. This was 2 years ago. It's unknown if chapter 2 and 3 will ever release. It's probably dead in the water.
Judge Artyom fun Fact: this game has an active discord server and no, it’s not dead, do further research before making claims. The monster update is not a retexture, it’s a remake with much high production value and nearly twice the content.
The difficulty is incredible, not (only)because I'm a masochist. The pointless finally made me see value in damageless debuffs that HAVE to be used in order to defeat some of the unforgiving enemies. Gives a dark souls satisfaction of hard to grasp but with great fair flow once you find the method.
This is the first time I've seen a LISA fan game reach this far in development. A lot of the other fangames were cancelled, left unfinished, or not even started. To see a real LISA fan game be able to bloom like this is just... amazing.
Considering Buckets, Ollie Nickels, and Fly Minetti in Painful and Lardy Hernandez in Joyful AND all the bullets that get wasted on Russian Roulette, there being a scarcity of bullets doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
I've always loved the idea of dark comedy in video games. You don't really get it that much in games that are actually trying to be funny. You're more likely to find it in horror games or games with a darker tone that just happen to put humor in as an aside.
honestly, i really like the design of your intro. Its quick and snappy, showcases most of your personality (exageration, but still) And has colors that, intentionally dont go well together... that sounds bad, but if you know anything about the meryland flag you know what im talking about
