This video explains when you might be able to return to sport after suffering a Lisfranc injury to your foot. We go into detail on what percentage of patients return to sport and what percentage return to their pre-injury level of play. We also explain what Lisfranc injuries are, which ligaments are injured and how they are treated. Lisfranc injuries can result in ongoing pain in up to 60% of cases and are missed in at least 20% of presentations. They are a major cause of ongoing pain in the foot following injury.
The information contained in this video can be found in the following article: ter Laak Bolk CS, Dahmen J, Lambers KT, Blankevoort L, Kerkhoffs GM. Adequate return to sports and sports activities after treatment of Lisfranc injury: a meta-analysis. Journal of ISAKOS. 2021 Jul 1;6(4):212-9.

The more lisfranc injury videos I see, like this one, the better it helps to understand the significance of this joint for foot stability and mobility.

Thank you very much for making this video. As you can guess I am suffering from this injury and desperate for answers. It happened die to a fall on September 13. After 6 weeks in a cast, the gap was noticed and my surgeon opted to put in a screw. After 81 days in a cast I have now been given a walker boot with the instructions to gradually try to increase the load and then I have another checkup in a months time. At this stage I can barely imagine being able to stand on it. It all seems to take so horribly long. I was relieved to see almost everyone returns to sport. I'm hoping that cycling will be possible again. I was running half marathons easily days before it happened but I imagine even thinking of running again is pretty delusional. I'm pretty certain you will not reply to my comment since you don't want to give unwarranted medical advice. But if you could confirm that people with this injury return to cycling, I would find that comforting.

I have a strong suspicion this happened to my foot yesterday playing baseball. After I swung, my back foot popped (similar feeling as when you get a chiropractor adjustment) as I pushed off to run to first. Didn’t hurt and I ran ok but the next day noticed slight swelling and tenderness when walking at the point in my foot described in the video. Hope it isn’t too bad 😅

I’m 30 about to have surgery on this Thursday 7/13/23. Would love to return to play basketball I believe I’m getting the the third. He said couple screws and fusion taking a bone from my heel. I am still able to play basketball now but my motion is limited and I can’t jump very much at all and always in constant pain. Wondering if this surgery is worth it?

Oh yeh. Some of these docs do not take a lisfranc injury seriously. My doc only treated the lisfranc fracture and neglected the lisfranc ligament that I am now looking for another doc. Some docs are just jerjs.

Sorry that happened. My husband is a physician, and when I hurt my foot he wouldn't even let me go to ER or Urgent care, INSISTED on seeing only an orthopedic surgeon (board certified) who SPECIALIZES in feet. He said there are so many quacks out there you really need to be careful.
