I think, like the Jon Anderson album, that this is a personal farewell to the music business. He has sold the Pink Floyd rights and this is for the fans. Thank you David for being in my life.
Wow! Jim, having got this album well and truly under my skin prior to hearing your reaction, your summation is spot on and completely in tune with my own. If and only if Scattered is last ever song on a David Gilmour recording then what a way to finish! 5 stars!
David Gilmour is responsible for much of the great music which has soundtracked my life but this is very much the work of a 78 year old man (and wife) who has lived a life very unlike mine. The obvious comparison is with Jon Anderson's recent album which does show more energy and ambition. Both retain immense talent but Anderson's is the one that I'd want to hear again.
I see a lot of criticism of Polly's lyrics, so often people judging David for, "letting his wife hold his testicles in her purse." To those people, I promise you this: if Polly is exploring these themes, David is right there with her. Or quite possibly these ate themes David has been expressing and Polly understands him so well that she can put words to his emotions when he cannot. Remember, he is significantly older than her. p.s. the guitar solos (i hear three different ones back to back, esclalating) in Scattered make me weep. And it isn't sadness. It is...fulfillment?
