I didn't grow up with Eminem's music. I just got into hip-hop within the last two years. I have come to love all of his music that I have heard. I have come to love lyrical rap because of it
“Eminem was that guy”, brother, The Eminem Show (yes, a 20+ year old album) is the best selling hip hop album this decade. It has moved over 5m album units since 2020 - in comparison Drake’s CLB has moved 3.6m. Mockingbird, Superman, Without Me are three of the most streamed hip hop songs this week for the past several months. Eminem still _is_ that guy. His views on RU-vid alone doubles second place (Drake) each month, since 2020. His numbers are astronomical. Till I Collapse is the song is the first non-single song to go Diamond too, and his total sales _do_ put him up there as one of the best selling musicians in history next to Elvis, The Beatles, etc.
Even ignoring all the accolades and financial success, Eminem is an absolutely incredible wordsmith. He finds rhymes where nobody else does, he's got incredible speed and clarity, he drops some great references, and crafts some incredible double and triple meaning lines, his flows can be incredibly intricate, full of internal and multisyllable rhymes. Em has cemented himself as one of the greatest rappers to have ever lived. And while his most recent stuff hasn't been as successful, he's showing he's still got it in him to drop absolutely killer tracks now and then.
How much I appreciate when rap artists create their own beat, even if it's simple, than lifting a 25-year old song and rapping over it. Which, also semantics, is different than, "sampling." I think of the difference between Beastie Boys who used hundreds or thousands of samples vs Diddy whose biggest hits to me were basically well-produced cover songs.
