Dis-Cover Episode 70. Music as comfortable as my most comfortable sweater. Mac Demarco, you are making me smile and I can't ask for more than that! :-)
I have no idea why I am so obsessed with watching a random, English man listen and lose himself to an artist whose fans are mostly rabid teenagers, but I'm sticking around.
Mac's father was actually absent for most of Mac's life (he was kicked out of the house when Mac was 5 yo due to drinking, drugs and abusive behavior), and just prior to this album they ended up getting more contact because his father had been diagnosed with cancer, so some of the songs on the album ("My Old Man", "On the Level", "Moonlight on the River" and "Watching Him Fade Away" I think) deal with his feelings about his dad and this situation
And also macs relationship with his dad isn’t really one at all, mac has said. This album is him trying to figure out what that relationship should mean
This video is awesome🔥. Keep that energy 6:30 My old man 9:54 this old dog 12:21 Baby you’re out 14:58 For the first time 18:00 One another 20:42 Still beating 23:47 Sister 25:37 Dreams for yesterday 29:01 A Wolf who wears sheep clothes 31:48 One more love song 35:47 On the level 39:32 Moonlight on the river 46:28 watching him fade away
The maturity and restraint Mac shows in this album is what makes this album for me. He also shows some confidence and comfortability in all the songs here. Gone are the demo-sounding days. This was the first album Mac recorded with digital equipment. He previously recorded on tape on all his albums before This Old Dog. Overall, it's just a step-up from his first 2 albums and mini-LP Another One. Listening to Moonlight on the River out loud on speakers is quite the experience! The whole album really.
Moonlight on the River is the song I listened to when I realized my dog was about to die. So it was a beautiful sad song before, but now it just holds a different place in my heart. And the lyrics just hold so much significance to losing a loved one
Any chance you could do the usual and just drop me a quick comment to give me an idea of where this video is (or isn't) blocked? I don't trust my RU-vid stats.
This is probably his best album. It’s such a warm, inviting and at times depressing record- definitely Mac’s deepest and most personal album so far and easily my favorite. Pretty much every track is wonderful, and the fact that it all “sounds the same” works here because everything feels part of a whole, and the album just unified as a whole.
It really is weirdly wholesome, watching the most optimistic man, listen to my current favourite artist and especially really enjoying him at that too. It strangely means a lot watching a dude appreciate an album that holds a lot of personal meaning to me. Thank you!
Thanks yet again! There's this raw emotion to this album. That I haven't heard in his previous work. That I find really beautiful. I'm glad you enjoyed!
Mac didn't really have a relationship with his father, there's a video of him meeting his dad after a show. You can see the tension. This album was made at a point where macs dad was on the verge of dying. His dad survived
Seeing you join in on Dreams from yesterday with that big smile on your face was so wonderful, couldn’t help but smile too. I love your stuff man, thanks for the laughs and smiles
Feel like I’ve been listening to Mac with you because I “discovered” 2 at the beginning of March right around when you listened to it. Listened to all the other albums since then and I’ve been loving all of his music but 2 is my favorite. I’m glad you’re enjoying the music just as much as I am.
Great video, dude. This is my favorite mac album. Really solid, and I prefer the better production and more organized playing, and the emotion really powers the album. All you've got left is another one for straight up mac demarco. That one's 100% heart break. That's pretty much every song, but they're really good. Once again you're freakishly funny. Don't know why I keep saying that but I genuinely laugh multiple times every video (which is hard to do). Keep it up, dude!
your videos make me remember of a friend, we used to spend some time hearing to a lot of different music and discovering some good stuff, there is quite some time that we don't see each other and spend some time doing that, i miss those days
What a chill album that one! All of his albums are great for a warm summers eve listen, reminds me of my military service. And yeah, the album is basically him figuring out his relationship with his dying father(whom actually pulled through suprisingly). Waiting for your listen of the "Another One"! Thanks as always man. One of these videos always makes my day!
Lovvveeeee this album probably my fav mac album bc its so personal and raw kinda like lennons palstic ono band album which is one of macs favs. His pops split when he was really young so they never had a close relationship with him and while writing this new album his dad became really sick but then later in an interview he stated that his dad was actually getting better and was kinda nervous for him to listen to the album lool. U should really do a review on his ep another one its really good and since its not as long as the others u can even react to his new single nobody on it as well!! Also like i said last time another artist who has a really unique sound is Homeshake his albums are fantastic!! Keep up the great vids!
My favourite Mac album by far, I have this on vinyl myself. If it hasn't been suggested, I'd recommend listening to Neutral Milk Hotel's album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Great video and I look forward to your future content
@@mercurialno6 tbf, you are a goofy at times, but overall, loveable and charming dude to watch, I wouldn't want anyone else to react to some of my fave albums
Since you’re the currents little dark age droney guitar man , I’d suggest to you the works of Beach Fossils , Diiv , Wild Nothing , Real estate , The Drums ( Portamento album) , Hockey Dad , Acid Ghost , Lotus Plaza , or Deerhunter ( Microcastle album) .
Great video mate, loving all the Demarco reactions, even though i kind of know all of the songs, its nice to see other people reacting to him!! Also try listening or even making a video reacting to "Wild Nothing - Indigo", i think you'll like it, it gives me Duran Duran vibes sometimes ! Anyways keep up the good work !
Glad to see that you joined the fandom and the waiting for a new Mac DeMarco LP. There's already a single out there if you look forward to listen the new sound. Also, I have a recommendation for you, give a listen to the One More Love Song version that was on the Jimmy Fallon Show, to my ears it's by far better than the album one. Cheers.
You have probably heard “The Stone Roses” by the The Stone roses. But if you haven’t, I would love you to do a discover episode with that album. It’s just simply the best album ever.
Hey Merc, I've been watching your channel for a while now, and I think a certain band called Death Grips would be awesome for Dis-cover. I'd recommend either The Money Store or Bottomless Pit since they're their most accessible records. It'd be awesome if you could do even a little bit of a reaction.
Listen to the album of invitation of her’s - her’s They’re a Liverpool British indie duo with gems of music I promise you won’t hate it and they’re great humble people too but sadly they passed couple days back on tour but it would be a recommendation to listen to them!
Love it mate. You should definitely check out an Australian band called ‘DMAs’. Their sound fuses brit-pop and classic Aussie pub-rock in a really interesting way. Would love to hear your thoughts on them. Keep up the good work !
Haha the pre-order of this album was great because everyone got a random color for their vinyl. But let's be honest here, blue is the color of the demarco man himself! #blueboi
I think this is easily Mac’s best album. Loved his new song Nobody as well, should do a snip-it video reviewing it. Tame Impala has a beautiful new song too✌️
this old dog is probably my favorite song of this album, i dont know somehow, the lowered tune slightly felt warmer and it did affect my emotion. great content except you made me jump out of my seat when u scream that oooo's. haha, good job m8.
I know! 70 (actually 71 right now) albums! Unbelievable!!!! Truly unbelievable. Who would have thought it when I originally played that King Gizz album just to stick it to the copyright police!
DEFINITELY! Ying Yang is still my favorite album by Mac Demarco. Not to say his newer work isn't great, but his Makeout Videotape work is so distinct to the point that I can't find any other music like it. Especially Ying Yang. Island Groovies has been a go-to song for years for me. BOSSA YEYE is also an amazing short release
I came to see ur reaction on one more love song...instead I heard a cover of it and I now I dont know how to react to that 😂😂. Actually it was great mac would approve it ❤️
Can I drop a recommendation? Sticky Fingers(not the stones albums) - Caress Your Soul. Great Neo-Reggae, indie, and a ska punkish. Sublimeesque band from Sydney. Great record, loved every song.
Wil you be listening to the new Tame Impala album when it drops? :) He already released one of the songs Patience, and played it live at SNL as well as an other new song.
I've watched a few reaction channels, I like #6 bc he's got a lot of music history and perspective, comparing my favs to other of my faves. like i wouldn't necessarily think of George harrison or Lennon when listening to Mac but it makes sense!
