This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Why are there two rock songs about lithium but none about, say, beryllium? In a talk at once funny, profound, and educational, Ben Lillie weaves a tale about the origin of the mysterious element we know as lithium.
Ben Lillie is a former particle physicist and the director of The Story Collider, a live series that features true stories about science.

This is actually one of the MOST USEFUL TED Talks I have ever come across- it shows how Universe and Self are two sides of the same coin- and matter in its various forms are so biocentric. Lithium by its very nature and effects is a true epitome for that which underlines this syllogism-from the way it transforms human beings' personalities viscerally, to its Big Bang origins - everything is so fascinating about Li and he brings it out so very eloquently. I found a deeply spiritual meaning that connects modern chemistry with ancient mysticism in this talk.

Why does lithium have such an influence on our "personality"? Why do potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, etc.? Simply because we involved amid these compounds/elements. They were in the food we ate, so they became necessary for our wellbeing. That's evolution. Since we get less lithium, magnesium, potassium in our food in the 21st century than we did a long time ago, our mental and physical health suffers. So YES, of course these substances help our mental and physical health. There is no mystery about this.

Lithium is really cool in how it wants to act like sodium & potassium but can't quite do it. It will react furiously in water but mostly never explodes (sodium & potassium = different story). If you hold a match to it it'll burn the brightest red you've ever seen. Then toss it in water after it's on fire it's the only alkali metal that dances into fragments as those fragments explode into smaller and brighter red sparks it acts nothing like sodium or potassium. Just the way it reacts with water & other salts, it's unique energy being close to hydrogen, something about what it does to the brain is fundamentally balancing it needs more & better research spread across more salts. I don't know but I suspect that big pharma funds a couple lithium salts it knows are more dangerous since the safer salts people may realize both its effects but also how easy it is to make. Free lithium and acids are everywhere in all markets across all societies.

There's a drop in depression in populations with more lithium in their water supply. The effect is dose dependent which makes that fact even more relevant. Lithium is actually needed in the body for certain biological processes. You can get low dose lithium at the health food store.

He's telling a story. His science is very simplified. A basic Hydrogen atom is just a proton. But, protons can turn into neutrons in nuclear fusion. You take 1H (a hydrogen with mass 1, so 0 neutrons) and combine it with another 1H and you get 2H (a hydrogen with mass 2, so 1 neutron) Then, you can add another 1H to your 2H and get either 3He or 3H. And then your 3He might get another 1H to become 4He, or it might get combine with a 4He to form 7Li. That's lithium, some amount of it is being made in our star from Proton-proton II chain reaction. At temperatures where fusion takes place, one of the protons in lithium is going to want to decay into beryllium which if it continues on the Proton-proton II chain reaction will end up turning into two helium atoms. That's probably what he meant when he said that lithium 'melts' away in the sun. Some of that lithium will find itself out to the colder regions of the sun before anything happens to it. So, some of our lithium is indeed stardust, but enough of it is formed from the other fusion methods that he describes that he's not really wrong. He's simplifying the science to tell a story.

Seeking for help.. My bestie thinks she is suffering from bipolar...this hasn't been confirmed yet by a specialist though...but the symptoms are quite similar... She has had a major depressive phase..which lasted for more than an year... during which she took the most extreme step too but was fortunately saved...this was a few months back... But she's quite stable now.. in terms of having suicidal thoughts... Currently the thing is that her emotions aren't in her control...sometimes she just cries and cries literally for hours without any reason..and experiences severe headache too.. Also, there are a lot of mood swings...At a particular instant she will be very depressed, numb and cold..won't talk with anybody...and on the very same day after a few hours or on the next day she will be highly energetic and excited... Now the issue is that first of all we are in our teenage only....still at such a tender age too she is giving the best possible fight.... Secondly she hasn't informed her parents about her current symptoms for multiple reasons...as far as I have understood..the reason is she is a bit afraid of getting treated...and also she believes that if she will inform her parents then out of concern they'll start invading her privacy which she has been given currently... Another issue is that for some reasons neither can I inform them... I have been trying to convince her about informing her parents and seeking for professional help.. but she says she wants to wait.. Also..for some reasons I can't even meet her frequently...and worse...I will be going far away from her to another city in a few days.. So basically I stand almost helpless... one thing is for sure that professional help is absolutely necessary or else the condition might worsen... I don't know what to do and the only thing I could think of is seeking help through such platforms... I would be really very grateful if any professional or past sufferer can make me understand that how can I convince her for seeking professional help and also that how should I behave in her manic and low epsiodes so that I don't worsen the condition....

I can explain how lithium works. The reason people dont know is because they havnt learnt about orgone energy orchi. Or prana. Lithium the lightest metal on the periodic scale. When metal like lithium enters the body and the brain it attracts orgone energy.the mantle of energy or orgone repairs rebalances does lots of things to the physical. We in essence are life force. Which lithium attracts. Life force has its own knowledge. And may not be logical. Where in lies the problem to understand it. Using logical means.

Dᴏᴡʟᴘʜɪɴ Is it found in Afghanistan? I've taken it in carbonate form for bipolar disorder before - some like it.. it makes me feel very 'blah'..but less impulsive and think more about why I'm doing something or if I should. Some actually think it's a trace nutrient we're mostly missing.

@Dowlphin
@Dowlphin 8 лет назад
Frater Tenc Sounds about right I guess. Psychiatry is mostly driven by the mind's control issues anyway. Lack of heart gets insecure in the presence of unrestrained joy, but is satisfied when the subject is sedated. It's a very deep and widespread psychological issue, and from my own experiences somewhat in the direction of bipolar I can say that it might, at least in some cases, just be a symptom, a reflection, of the sickness in society. I can get immensely passionate because I allow myself to be deeply inspired by some things, and then I get miserable and depressed when I again and again receive negative reaction from insecure people who try to suppress it because it reminds them too much of their own suppressed happiness. And that response can sink in just as deeply as the joyful inspiration. Summed up: twitter.com/Dowlphin/status/665716976950620160

I am amazed. He speaks as though he saw it happen and was measuring the chemical compositions of the different parts of the universe as it was proceeding. I always tell my grandkids, "Ask yourself 'What did they actually see?' If they didn't see it then they are just making it up."

Well I hope your grandkids are smart enough to figure out that it is not only things that you can see that can be understood, hopefully will give them the impetus to look further into science to see what can be understood by using science to see into the "invisible" worlds and even back in time.

Have you tried it? I'm genuinely interested. i take orotate, but I take magnesium carbonate and that one seems to enter my brain just fine. I wonder if carbonate works the same or better in the gut (or the brain). Not trusting any studies, just experiences.

The whole idea of the Big Bang is sooooooo much hypothesis. None of it has been observed and quite frankly the highest thing you could categorize it as is philosophy of science

+Ned4Games A supernova can outshine a galaxy, but only for a short time. The brightest objects of all are gamma ray bursts but, as the name suggests, they are very brief.
