Just some other info I've been asked since the release of the video. 1. Yes FPV-Power are an Australian Company - They are non for profit, they make batteries and sell them - this is why they are affordable. 2. Mercury have confirmed they used the term 'lithium ion' to cover all lithium type batteries with a BMS - LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 included

As someone who is an electrician and also in the RC Helicopter Hobby. I totally understand lithium batteries. FPV power cut their teeth in the RC hobbies. I run their batteries in my Yak and absolutely love them. Once again another great review Mate.

Cracking info well done. The hybrid battery is particularly interesting. I've been running a 24V LiFePO4 battery for my MG (brushed) trolling motor for the past 4 years and never had any issues. I tend to think that the whole "don't use Li with a brushed motor" is an urban myth. One big positive of going Lithium that no one seems to address, is that your battery capacity will also last longer by virtue of the fact that the voltage is higher for longer (P=IV) so the current draw is actually less - as well as the ability to draw deeper.

On Mercury and their discomfort with Lithium: another issue is that alternators cannot handle the low resistance of a Lithium battery (or for that matter a Lithium / capacitor battery). Alternators typically don't even cope with large loads from several lead acid (typically AGM) batteries in a boat. But at least lead acid will gain resistance as their charge level increases. Which puts less load on the alternator. Hence the solution to all that, is a DC-DC charger, in between the alternator and the lower resistance batteries. Or a more expensive solution, is an external regulator, which lowers alternator load when the alternator is working very hard, My main concern with Lithium though, is what happens if the BMS fails.

A great review mate. I want all of the batteries for different purposes. The 12v 75Ah battery would be great for the general electronics in the boat, including my 12v bow mount. The cranking battery with capacitor just sounds like a good idea (and I'm an ex electronics engineer so it just sounds cool to me). The 24v battery would be a god-send on Googong where electric motor only rules mean I'm currently running a 24v transom mount motor backed by two very heavy 120Ah 12v AGMs. If I had to choose one, I'd probably settle on the 24v for the transom mount. It'd take most of the weight out of the back of the boat while running on the low powered electric.

Great info! Admit I had to watch more than once for it all to sink in. One question someone may be able to answer - the electronics Lithium battery connected to the VSR with the crank battery in this setup is being charged by the outboard. This FPV battery I think comes with it's own charger. I thought that was because these batteries need special chargers (which are often expensive). Is it OK for the health of the battery to just be charged from the outboards alternator?
@ByronTeaHill
@ByronTeaHill 2 года назад
You do need to look at the alternator and check the amps and make sure that is sufficient to charge the battery. If it’s not you may need to add a dc-dc, but it wasn’t an issue for me.

Thank you for the great review. Can you please explain the Isolator 50a on the +12 line to the boat electronics please? Trying to understand what it isolates on a single circuit. Thank you!
@ByronTeaHill
@ByronTeaHill 2 года назад
it isolates the power from the system, like a big on off switch for the batteries so they aren't live

@@ByronTeaHill thank you that makes sense. So I purchased the same DVSR as you. It shows the common post to go to motor + and then to boat electronics. Did you not run the dvsr common to the electronics and just use the house battery + to the electronics with the shut off? Thank you!

I would be keen to see how much lighter the 24 bolt would be than my current 2x12 volt 100 ah batteries.

Such a good review. Really helps demystify Lithium. Thanks Mate. The 24v 80Ah would be brilliant in my little boat to replace the 2 12v chunky monkey lead acids located under the front deck driving the Garmin Force.

Great review and information i would love to replace my aging lead acid batteries with a nice new 24 volt system and rid the boat of the 60 plus kilos of weight and replace with less than half of that
