Lithuania plans to purchase Main Battle Tank (MBT) from Germany with a total purchase value of 2 billion euros or the equivalent of 2.2 billion US dollars.
This was conveyed by the Senior National Security Advisor for the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys.
If implemented, it will be one of the largest military purchases Lithuania has ever made. This package includes tanks, ammunition, logistics and supplies.
But Budrys said no decision had been made on the type of tank to be purchased, whether the Leopard 2A6, 2A7, or the newest 2A8 variant.
Earlier in March 2023, Lithuania's head of defense, Lt. Gen. Valdemaras Rupšys, had announced that the country's military would acquire up to 54 new MBTs to strengthen the combat capacity of the Lithuanian ground forces.
“We propose to change the mechanized infantry battalion to a tank battalion. This new unit will be part of the division that Lithuania wants to establish in 2030,” said Rupšys, as quoted by local broadcaster TV3.
For your information, since 2007 the Lithuanian Army has been using equipment that is compatible with NATO standards.
This includes modern armor equipment such as the Oshkosh L-ATV 4×4 MRAP from the US, then the 8×8 Boxer Infantry Fighting Vehicle (locally known as Vilkas) from Germany, and the PzH 2000.SPH 155 mm field artillery system as well as the Germans.
