Below are profiles of friends and fellow Americans, who understand the feeling of being expats and singing of home, and translated the song lyrics to 한글, Tiếng Việt, 日本語, 中文, Yoruba, עברית, Hrvatski, русский язык, Français, Português, and Español. To view the subtitles, select a language from "Subtitles/CC" under settings⚙️, near the lower right-hand corner of the video.
- Korean translation: Paul and Sarah moved to the Southern part of the US with their two young daughters, including Joyce on this song, from Korea in the ‘90s and made their way to New Jersey before finally settling in Pasadena, California and welcoming a third daughter. Now long-time Angelenos, Sarah is a Koreatown fixture and both are integral members of the local Korean American community.
- Vietnamese translation: Ngoc Bich is an immigrant from Vietnam who came to the U.S. in the ‘80s at age 17. A refugee who fled her homeland by boat following the end of the Vietnam war, she has called San Jose home since and proudly calls two granddaughters and three daughters her own, including Cecilia, who worked on this translation with her and is passionate about telling refugee and immigrant stories. One of Cecilia’s proudest moments was bringing her parents back to visit Vietnam thirty years after their escape.
- Japanese translation: Hitomi is a second-generation American and Nisei from Berkeley who has made Los Angeles home since 2002. When not composing for and playing with various ensembles or spending time with her family, she can be found watering her plants and enjoying food. She played saxophone on this song. (hitomioba.com)
- Chinese translation: Lily was born in Taiwan and moved to the US with her husband to study in New York. A retired pharmacist and loving Ahma to four grandchildren, she enjoys traveling and resides with her husband in her long-time home among friends in the Bay Area.
- Yoruba translation: Adeyemi moved from Nigeria in 2013 for grad school in NYC and currently works as a software engineer in Seattle, a city that's more overcast and gloomy than he'd like. But he's able to brighten up any room with his big smile and warm personality, bringing the Lagos sunshine wherever he goes. Ade likes to sing and play soccer, and dreams of being a basketball player.
- Hebrew translation: Shaya is a third-generation American and a community advocate, writer, and photographer born and raised in Berkeley, California, who learned Hebrew during her 10 years in Jerusalem. She now lives and drifts in her floating home on the docks of Seattle, where you will find several shelves of books she hasn't read, as well as a copy of her grandmother’s book-which she has read-a Holocaust memoir titled "Mommy, What's that Number on Your Arm?" (shayalyon.com)
- Croatian translation: Astrid is a New York based musician from Croatia who has been organizing the Crescendo Music Festival on the island of Cres for more than a decade and now also hosts house concerts at her Brooklyn home. In addition to singing, composing, and playing hand percussion and kazoo, she makes plastic art, drawing from her former life as a student of chemical engineering and environmental science. (astrid-music.com)
- Russian translation: Lolita was born in Russia and immigrated to the US with her husband and two children in 1992, settling in Brooklyn, New York. Now residing in Staten Island, she loves to travel and enjoys spending time with her four grandchildren. Lolita’s coworker Kira, a Brooklyn girl through and through who emigrated from Ukraine at a young age, collaborated on the translation.
- French translation: Julian was born in Nashville to an Italian American father and a Vietnamese American mother, who came to study in the US in 1968. The rest of his family in Vietnam fled to France after the fall of Saigon, and Julian grew up speaking French with his extended family. He enjoys the great outdoors from his new home base of Portland and has recorded two albums of songs illuminating Asian American histories for his project "No-No Boy." (nonoboyproject.com)
- Portuguese translation: Sun was born in Seoul, moved to Vienna, and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. At age 19, she moved to study design in New York City and now lives and works in Los Angeles, illustrating whimsical characters inspired by human connection, spirituality, dreams, and nature. (sunyeoart.com)
- Spanish translation: Fernando emigrated from Argentina with his family as a child and shares a historical house with his teenage daughter in their home state of Texas. When not working on his film script, he is helping others make the US their home as an immigration attorney. His bilingual law office team provided the translation.
If you’d like to add your language, that would be most welcome! Just let me know.
