InterCity was making a profit as a sector in BR days. It was a recognisable brand across the UK. That could be replicated today. It was responsible for its track and signalling too.
The truth is, we don't appreciate what we have until it's gone. This video made me nostalgic, even though I'm from Spain, because we've also lost a lot in our railways.
The problem is separation of infrastructure & operator. The German railways were once they envy of Europe, now that the EU Commission has broken up DB they're a national embarrassment.
Has to be either virgin or ideally a return of the LMS/BR Intercity type TOC, we’ve sold the bottom out of this country the last 50 years and now we the public are paying the price of letting them do it.
The same have been obvious for govia since 2009 and they got themslink. Removing virgin was the worst disaster in British rail history since giving Arriva northern in 2016
@@welsh_Witch Every other operator First runs is awful, and GWR is far from good. All of their stopper trains are in abysmal condition, with absurd levels of dirtiness both inside and out, seats and interior panels literally falling apart, and they cost just as much as an intercity service along the same route of track.
What I wouldn't give for br to come back. it was flawed but nowhere near as f*cked as the nonsense system of price gouging middlemen and careless franchises of today.
