Little Harbour and Tilloo Sandbank, Abaco, Bahamas
On May 17, 2023 we left Hope Town, Elbow Cay and cruised to Little Harbour on the east side of Great Abaco.
We arrived at Little Harbour at low tide so we anchored off the beach for a few hours. The entrance to the harbour can be as low as 3’ so we waited for higher tide before making our way in. It wasn’t very busy so we were able to get one of the mooring balls and stayed for four nights.
Tucked away in the secluded location of Little Harbour, Pete’s Pub and Gallery is an Abaco landmark, and a MUST VISIT! It is very popular with both locals and visitors.
We loved the open air, pet friendly, restaurant and bar with a sand floor. The scenery is beautiful and the food and drinks were great. We went for lunch twice with boating friends and then had to return for a sushi dinner. We also took the ‘walk-over’ to see the Atlantic Ocean side.
Pete’s father Randolph Johnston, was a well known American educator and sculptor. He relocated here with his family in the mid 1950’s. Once here they started to create the Little Harbour that you see today. Randolph built the original buildings and foundry. His son Pete Johnston started Pete’s Pub and has also become a well known artist internationally especially renowned for his large scale oceanic inspired works and his Old Man and The Sea sculptures. His work is in museums and collections worldwide.
We visited the gallery and enjoyed looking at the incredible sculptures. A third generation of Johnstons’ are now making their mark.
On our way back to Hope Town we spent a night at Tilloo Sandbank.
The locals have constructed a “camp” out of junk that washed up on the shore. After a walk on the beach we swam on the sandbar and enjoyed a nice afternoon with some of the other boaters anchored there. A larger charter yacht dropped anchor near by. It was interesting to watch the crew deploy all the water toys from the stern “garage”. The anchorage was a bit wavy overnight but we will definitely go back. @BeyondGeorgianBay
