I love how Charles is fighting against Laura growing up. He realizes she is not his little girl anymore. Poor Almanzo, he is so sweet and naive. This is one of my favorite episodes too.
@@Michelle-pn9xt times and people were much different then. It was not uncommon for girls to marry in their teens, especially in farming communities. The way Almanzo was written , he was sweet gentle respectful but shy. He followed the customs of the time whivh was to.ask.permission before courting. You need to.look at the series in the context of the times it was set in
Yes, that and his manliness! God, he was sooo handsome....his gorgeous hair, 💇 his beautiful smile, 😊 and when he defended his family and he'd punch those guys out!!🥊💪👊 There's something about Charles Ingalls.....very sexy! ❤❤❤
Yes, he was! 🎉🎉🎉 I watched him as Little Joe on Bonanza, too. Fun Fact: Michael's real name is Eugene Horowitz, he's Jewish. He picked his name, Michael Landon outta a phone book, for acting reasons. 👍
Carmine carmina I think Laura was a little spoiled in this episode trying to get Almonzo to notice her new dress and hairstyle yes she was excited about growing up but she didn’t have to ask Almonzo about it
That is my all time favorite episode. That and the part where he realized how he felt about her and put all that sugar in his tea, and went outside to go to bed. Hilarious
Rumors would have ruined Laura socially she’s either have to move or live her life as a outsider in that town..it’s sad how double standards have shaped the worlds societies
@@dinamule3073 had they closed the door in those times, there would’ve been a LOT of speculation about what it was they were doing and that would’ve brought on the rumors. I think some of the things they abided by back then were odd, but a majority of women were highly respected and were careful to never do anything disrespectful. Unfortunately, than as now, men aren’t held to the same standards.
I can only dream of falling for someone as charismatic, charming, and lovely as Almanzo... The chemistry these pair had on screen was infectious, my favourite couple alongside Charles and Caroline... The casting for this show was impeccable
@Nicole Jones no they didn't. Melissa Gilbert just said she thought dean butler was too old for the character & she was uncomfortable in the intimate scenes.
I hated this show when it was on t.v and I was a teenager. I fell in love with it in my 40's. I have the DVD collection and have watched it at least 6 times. The entire series. Best family show ever.
RebeccaRivera22 same! I could watch it over and over, and it enlightens me, breaks my heart, and makes me laugh, the same way it did the first time I ever saw it
RebeccaRivera22 I’ve loved this show when I was a little girl, and I raised my children watching it b/c it shows good morals and values, and my kids now let their children watch it as well! We don’t have many shows that teach children morals and values anymore, b/c of Hollywood, but the Insp Channel has some of the the good shows on there. ☺️
I love how Michael Landon spent half the episode fighting against Laura and Almanzo being together and Laura’s growing up and then towards the end of the episode he played matchmaker
I remember watching this story unfold, the first time it was in tv. All my friends at school, and I were so excited when Manly fell in love with his Beth! Nice to see this again.
Michael Landon sold his reaction to Almanzo beautifully.., He knows Almanzo is perfect match for Laura, but he also struggles with accepting the age gap..
I loved: "Your pa told me I should ask you if you would go with me to the Church Social this Saturday" Laura: "He did?! Almanzo: "I mean I asked permission to ask you" He Did!?" "Yeah. So...How about it?" "Well, I'll have to think about it, Manly" Favorite scene EVER!
Yes and no. Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls) was only 15 years old in this scene. She had her first kiss on a film set with am man which is 23. Later Melissa asked Michael Landon (Charles Ingalls, producter,...) to change the story a little bit so in the episodes after the wedding they mostly just kissed on the cheek or hugged each other.
Marisa Buchser Aw how cute! ❤️ I saw her and some of the cast including Dean Butler (Almanzo) discussing that “famous kiss” in an interview. Melissa said that it was also her first kiss ever! Her mom was on the set crying when that was filmed. Actually the word used was “wailing.” They we’re getting closer and closer to kiss and her mom was just loosing it while watching. I guess you can’t blame her.
@@huntingfashiondolls3307So is Charles & Almanzo. They have that certain "cuteness" about them, while also having that ruggedness edge to them. Soo handsome! 💙💙💙
My favorite scene was when Almanzo and Eliza Jane were having tea and he said "She's just a kid, don't you think she's just a kid?" and Eliza said "No" and he looks at her and she repeats "NO". It was such a great moment....and bittersweet because Eliza knew everything was about to change for them.
Amazing though and though. Every episode had such and hold so much in one's minds lost for words.. watching each show had something that today it's 23/9/2017. No one has ever or will try what makes little house on the perri had . A lot TV show have had more then enough time and yet they have seen the wonderful work that shows on each show. I take my hat of to you all for playing there rolls with 100% in each actor thank you .MR MICHAEL LANDON. IN My Hart for ever and ever love Donna Bush.. Australia.
The art of telling a story through a show like this is past but I was so glad to have lived in a era where these and others were not considered too old fashion or cheesy like in today's crowd that would think so... Thanks for all those memories from watching classic TV reruns.
I think men were men, no matter the year. There were some that were brought up respectful and others who were not. Women dated less back then, esp casually, and were more particular with ‘courting’ as they called it and fathers generally were more protective of their daughters. Girls got married young because there was less opportunity for single women.
I wonder if almanzo was starting to figure out that Laura had a "thing" for him before this episode ? She looked adorable in her grown up dress and heels. I do wonder why she isnt wearing the bun in her hair at the social dance? If she is considered grown and women wore their hair up at adulthood why is her hair in half a ponytail??
@@dinamule1119 She was a teenager, She was not a grown woman, but he was an adult. That is the reason Almanzo was talking to her parents about their age difference.
Thanks so much for sharing this! I am a HUGE fan of LHOTP...Laura and Almanzo were and still are my FAV couple on the show...that is, besides Ma and Pa Ingalls...lol
@@thatguy2372 they were probably going on historical context, in that fact that the real Mary never married, so Almanzo and Laura's children were Ma and Pa's first grandchildren.
@@thatguy2372 I think it was more so just an expression and they meant they wanted to call each other grandma and grandpa regarding Laura’s baby, since they probably weren’t called it a lot after the baby died, I don’t think it was done in a disrespectful way.
I watched the show off and on but I read all the books. I loved them so much! I love the innocence of their relationship. Believe it or not I know many Christian couples who’s courtships were like this today. Pure, godly and wholesome! That’s real romance!
"I got jealous that time Almonzo was going with that snippy Christy." "You know why?" "Ofcourse I do. Because I love Almonzo..." *Laura stops dead ass in her tracks** Charles: :))
Just like ma told her to. I used to watch this with my mom in the 70s. This and family feud was our favorite. I enjoyed watching my mother enjoy more than anything. Not much made her seem happy in those days
@@kellymcfalls1458 it had nothing to do with being spoiled. She was fighting with Almanzo and her father all season long being treated like a woman instead of a little girl. In this episode she finally 1. became a teacher (her father earlier said that she is a woman when she is a teacher)... and 2. she asked Almanzo about all her look just to check if he finally gets it that she is NOT tgat "qute little girl" but a grown up possible love interest. :-D ;-)
I get goosebumps every time I see the scene where Almanzo and Laura first kiss. Melissa Gilbert was 15 and she’d never been kissed, so she was really nervous.
I feel like an alien in a foreign world in 2018. I grew up with this show and cherish it to this day. Do not the values and sentiments expressed in this show have any meaning in todays dichotomous world?
Well, to be fair, I rediscovered this show. I'm 26 years old and my mom used to watch this series as a kid. She's the same age as Melissa Gilbert and she learned how to speak English because of this TV series. It's one of those gems of a show that wasn't redubbed in Tagalog language here in the Philippines back in the 70's and they would show it almost weekly at that time on the local TV channel. She's more than happy to know that my generation highly appreciates and still watches this show. It's a perfect way for a millenial and a 50+ baby boomer to bond this pandemic and I have to thank Michael Landon for that.
I wish we still lived in days like that. Wholesome, decent, Godly people who loved their neighbor and they all went to church together. That was the good ole days!
The good ole days... When people of certain races were not treated well and were not paid the same wages even with the same level of education, intelligence, and experience.
I dont know how much time passed between this final episode and the new season but Laura looks so much more grown up in the first episode of the new season
Laura and Charles' conversation on the way home on Laura's birthday always reminds me of my Dad and I. I don't always talk about it right away, but I can tell him anything. I've always talked to him about the guys in my life or even the guys I hoped to ultimately be a part of my life. I can relate, and it always makes me smile.
When the real-life Laura and Almanzo were courting, it was not unusual for there to be a large age gap; Almanzo was 6 days less than 10 years older than Laura (February 13, 1857; Laura was born February 7, 1867). By the late-1970s, it was a much bigger deal. Melissa Gilbert was 16 when this episode first aired; Dean Butler was 23. When they had their first on-screen kiss, Melissa's mother was off-stage, apparently very upset and had to be consoled.
@@jennywaldrop9864 which is understandable. it's weird that ppl think everyone must be comfortable w/ everything but if you're young usually you're new at it
@@oooh19 Yeah. I am sure that this teenager had never kissed a grown man. That would not be a good thing if she had done that. Hopefully, he was not involved with teenagers in real life.
I just loved these two together up until their wedding. I guess my issue with how they were written afterwards was the idea that they both had such tempers and would argue so often, BUT they loved each other. The concept that a loving relationship would have so much anger and fighting wasn't quite healthy. There were a few times in Ma and Pa's relationship where they disagreed, but they were usually civil and respectful. I would like to see more of that with Almanzo and Laura. There was a ton of this in shows and movies, where fighting equals passion equals love. Not sure I like it in order to teach kids about adult relationships.
I liked that they didn't have the stereotypical cookie-cutter relationship. They argued, had fights, behaved childishly at times but ultimately loved each other more than anything. I think their relationship was more realistic than Charles' and Caroline's
It was a happy marriage for them till their death. Laid rest side by side... I started to write my life.jounals after I knew LTHOP was Laura"s diaries made into books.. how wonderful
Hmm "I don't believe a girl should be married until she's 18"...? I seem to remember the exact same character telling a love struck Mary she couldn't marry until she was 15... XD lol I love this show...
I watch it all the time when iam home want to get the tapes when I can find them and have the money it's one of the best shows on TV besides the Waltons etc have a Jesus filled day
What a beautiful scene of Lara and Almanzo together for their first kiss. Good dialogue and talented actors. What a treat to be able to see this episode again.
Oh my goodness! This was one of my favorite episodes. I am sitting at my kitchen table watching this with a big Kool- Aid grin on my face. Oh no, I am telling my age for real... Lol.
Almamzo will be her future husband And I love Charles has a relationship with his Laura She will be marrying almamzo I like Charles he is a good father
The writers kept her a kid for too long. She looked alot younger than him. Height difference and she was tiny in shape. She was not developing quickly (no insult). We all develop at own pace. Her hair shouldve been up in the traditional bun to mark her maturity at this social not just when teaching. Lol i know if i had to wear an ankle length skirt all the time i would go nuts.
Tavullia Bella yes they were a decade apart I agree. However all the girl characters around her age were allowed to be grown up sooner: dressing mature, hair pulled up and wearing heels. The writers kept her looking juvenile for far too long. Nellie wasn't too much older and dressing womanly much sooner. Mary was only a few yrs younger yet Pa had no problem with her marrying at age 15 to John Sanderson. Mary wore heels at 15 and a mature dress. Almanzo couldnt see her as his equal when she dresses and looks like she can pass for his kid sister. I can see his hesitation in being careful not too seem like he is preying on her bec she looks SO much younger than him in looks and height. Even in heels she is still alot shorter than him. That was my point in my previous comment. He asked Eliza Jane in a roundabout manner if he was being inappropriate by liking her. "She's just a kid right" Eliza Jane said "no she's not".
@@tavulliabella8458 Not only in the book but in real life too. The real Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 and Almanzo in 1857. They married in 1885 when she was 18. They remained married for 64 years until his death in 1949 at 92. Laura died in 1957 at 90 years old. Their daughter Rose was born in 1886 and died in 1968.
Michael Landon’s acting in these Almanzo scenes was beyond words. How he managed the most perfectly hysterical facial expressions every time… it adds so much to the scene. I miss this show.
When Wilder was 25 years old and Ingalls was age 15, the two began courting. Wilder would drive Ingalls back and forth between De Smet and a new settlement 12 miles (19 km) outside town where she was teaching school and boarding. Then, when spring came, they would go for long buggy rides. Three years later, on August 25, 1885, Wilder and Ingalls were married
I loved their romance when I was in my teens and twenties but now that i am in my late forties and watching it again with their age gap makes my skin crawl!
Charles: A girl shouldn't get married until she's 18 . How come in "I'll Ride The Wind" ,he was going to let Mary get married to John Sanderson Jr. when she turned 15. In "The Wedding " Mary was around 16 she married Adam . (I guess this second one is a special circumstance) Either way, I LOVE this episode!!
I agree. Why was everything Mary did a younger age ok and when Laura wanted to she was too young. 1 theory I had is that Mary had her heart broken by john Sanderson when he was cheating on her at college. Maybe Charles didnt want Laura to experience the same anguish at 15 that Mary did so he figured let Laura wait a few yrs
During the filming the sweet sixteen episode it was Laura and almonzo first kiss. Well during filming of the first kiss scene Melissa's mother was having crying episodes seeing her daughter kiss for the first time. They had to make her leave the area so they can get the shot done. If you wanted to know how I knew about that info. It was Melissa or maybe it was Dean who gave an interview. Talking about what happened during shooting of that scene.
Was Dean Butler who said it on an interview with the cast years later 😊 I swear, I was just turned 16 and I was so excited my family thought I was silly. All those Harlequin novels made me a romantic 😊 or was it the Barbara Cartland novels, lol?
This is a sweet love story between laura and almanzo. They stick together especially when almanzo had a stroke and was bitter not excited about the birth of baby rose. He had to learn how to walk again. He made a full recovery and laura and almanzo grew even closer.
