Take a journey with me into the world of incubation and hatching birds of prey.
Today we look at the wonderful world of Little Owls (Athene noctua).
Adults weigh around 180g.
These chicks hatched at weights between 10g and 12g. They are just tiny. In six weeks they will be fully grown and ready to start trying to fly!
The incubators I use are:
Brinsea Raptor Contact Incubator
Grumbach S84
Brinsea Mini II

Aww. This is lovely. Since the parents are Sage and Olive, the chicks should be named after other spices. Saffron, Thyme, Basil, Cinnamon, Coriander. If you want to keep the theme going, but I know Owldemort is already named. And I had posted a list of names on the Fable video.

Sometimes I forget how wonderful humans can be. It’s easy to be angry at the world and humans when it seems like all we do is hurt and destroy, even without meaning to. But then I see things like this. And I thinks it’s so beautiful, that particularly kind humans can build relationships of trust with animals, and feed them, care for them, and help with their babies. It makes me really happy, to see that goodness. Especially here, where it’s done with such respect and kindness and love. Thank you for sharing, it made me smile lots. ❤️

And even more, those like you that can recognize and voice something, that to some may be stating the obvious that people either turn a blind eye to, are unaware of, or simply unable to understand what it is, what it could mean, and how to simple not take it for granted. Thank you for your thoughts. I wish Amy could read your comment. (sorry if i got their name wrong. I am going by the comments. I haven't caught up with past videos.)

Met a falconer recently who does pest control. I work at a hospital and the falconer uses a Harris hawk to scare off blackbirds and pigeons from the buildings. saw the bird but did not get too near as it was all flappy. Probably eats hospital staff in its spare time ;)

We can't afford to lose our precious hospital staff to hawks right now! 😋 I 😍 that the Trust allow natural control methods on the pigeon population. I remember 20 years ago a falconer friend lost contracts in city centres using peregrine as a deterrent (sometimes it would act on its amazing abilities) as some local people complained about having their children exposed to natural hunting behaviours. *sigh*

I have question, after viewing this extraordinary production for the fourth time. As I am not familiar with the UK’s history of power outages, but, do you have access to a back-up electrical source, (generator or car power inverter), in the event there should be an outage, while you are in an incubation process.? That’s pretty much the only time you would require a generator, cause the equipment you use is kinda similar to ICU and/or prenatal care.! Anyway,...you are certainly a jewel to our human race for such heart felt dedication and duty to our feathered companions...! Keep on, keep on, young lady.

@@harmon1286 I remember from the livestream she did recently she mentionned that she would sleep in short periods of time (like 4hrs or something) during the whole incubation process to go check up on the incubators, see if everything is still properly functionning. I assume these things are well insulated so they can retain heat for an amount of time at least, but I'm not sure about what she has in case of a full power outage. I assume she has a backup power source give the importance of keeping this equipment running at all times but I don't remember anyone asking about that.
