Christian Bale was 19 or maybe 20 when they filmed this, and he looks so grown up. Timotheé Chalamet was like 22 when they filmed the new version of Little Women and he looks so young and small! I loved both versions but it’s incredible how this cast looked so mature when in reality they were in their early 20s

Now here's the funny thing about this version of the story. They highlighted Laurie's loneliness and that his love to the March family was stemmed from that idea of how they filled that void. He longed for family, as he was raised as the only living heir to his name without siblings nor parents. His love for Meg was her beauty and grace. His love for Joe was purely that of fondness at the fact that he could be himself with her and all their silliness. Marrying Amy was perhaps questionable, not because she was literally a left-over, but at the idea that he only wanted to be part of the March family as they are the only significance in his life. But as an adult, I see why, in retrospect, Laurie needed a level-headed girl like Amy because she was a little more practical and realistic. Opportunistic might be pushing that statement about her, but her sense and sensibilities are more understandable given the context of her time. I never quite understand why people hated Amy. I think that despite her childishness of the first half, her character development is actually one of the most satisfying things I've seen in stories like these.

Exactly thank you the 1994 version made me feel like he was a pedo vibes, but the new movie Amy was younger but she wasn’t super young like in the 1994 movie compared to her older sisters. I honestly like timothee as lurie a lot better and how he was more involved with the marches but not obsessed to be in the family like the 1994 one. Bale is supposed to be a bit bitter and dark here, folks. Laurie is a little older, more jaded and bitter about Jo's rejection of him. He does see the March family as his own. Laurie has his own small redemption arc to complete, and Bale actually does this more convincingly than Timothee Chalamet. What you're not seeing yet is Laurie going to London, working for his grandfather but then coming to take care of Amy when she hears of Beth's death. I agree that the 2019 version gave greater weight to the Amy-Laurie love story and developed it better. But I was surprised that Timothee, an actor I love, wasn't able to get the emotional stakes across as well as Christian.

Gelatin Man So did the ‘94 version. In fact the ‘94 goes deeper with Laurie promising little Amy to kiss her and then keeping that promise when they grew up. Then there was anger/bitterness (in this clip), forgiveness (through their letters, reconciliation (aunt march’s death in europe), and finally love. It’s a complete arc.

I kind of wish Christian and Samantha had the 2019 version of their time in Europe because it is a more fleshed out scene. That is one of the few weaknesses of the 1994 film. However, what I really wish both versions had were actual scenes of them falling in love after Amy's initial lectures. Like in the novel when Laurie escorts Amy to a party and sees what an attractive, accomplished, and kind young lady she had become. Or when they continue their travels separately and become frequent pen pals who are falling in love. They could have had a montage of them writing to each other to show their growing feelings. Adult Amy is no longer the selfish bratty girl she once was, and the finer details always tends to get lost when trying to balance Amy's story and Jo's story in a movie. Moviegoers who haven't read the book don't realize how much she does change, and that she does develop into the perfect partner for Laurie.
@jenniferflores2567

For those who like to rewatch movies, believe me that the version of the nineties is better. For me it was a surprise to see that child in Europe but after pay attention to her ways and how she relates to each character I understood well what she became. As well as the change in Laurie's feelings.

She felt chastised when Laurie called her out on marrying for money and didn't go into angry 'don't mansplain to me' rant that would've been very distasteful back in the day. I don’t understand why everyone is hating on Christian Bale. This is the superb version of little woman and Christian Bale will always be the superior Laurie. Timothee looks like a little boy PERIOD. Sure Christian Bale might’ve been younger than him when he originally shot this but I cannot take Timothee seriously at all especially when he’s trying to act like a grown adult in the later years when Amy is grown and same with Florence Pugh, I think she’s a great actress but her deep voice just doesn’t suit young little Amy and I can hardly tell from when she’s pretending to be younger Amy to “grown “Amy it just doesn’t work for me the 1994 version is perfect. The cast is absolutely amazing. The scenes are done so much better too. Greta Gerwig’s version is like the happy go lucky fairytale version of little woman.

I mainly dislike going through the comments under any scene of this movie cuz I will see Timothee's stans spamming about how Christian wasn't that good and the new ver is way better than the old ver. They're both fine! They can co-exist! you think the new ver is much better, and I think the old ver is way more timeless. Have your pick..

I personally feel Christian had a better balance of handling the young Laurie and the mature Laurie. I didn't care for this particular scene, but in other parts of the movie he comes across more believable. I like Timothee as the younger Laurie, but he still seems too young in his drunk scene. I think they should have left that scene out.

Back in that time period, it was the style and fashion to not tan, it showed that you were wealthy, since back in the day people who tan were usually farmers and people who did outdoor labor work.

I disagree! Each film brings something special to the screen; even though I loved Winona’s Jo and Christian’s Laurie (before he became a jealous, indolent creep) and even though the 1994 version, which I grew up with, will always have a special place in my heart, the 2019 film is a fresh take, much more like actual people living their lives before your eyes instead of actors reading lines, and makes an interesting reference to Alcott’s own experiences while publishing the novel. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve read the screenplay and I have very high hopes for the new film. Please don’t avoid it for fear of spoiling your image of the story. You don’t know what you’re missing out on!

I almost missed it for that reason but changed my mind when I found out it would be playing on my birthday and might be my only chance to share the story with my husband haha, and I’m so glad I did! I loved the 2019 version just as much as the 1994 version, which I would not have thought possible. Seeing some scenes from the book that weren’t included in the 1994 version was like seeing some old friends from childhood.

But in the newer one I can’t even tell the age difference between Laurie and Amy with Florence pugh staying the same character. I think they could’ve done a better job to differentiate when she is a “child” to older adult. I personally think it’s her semideeper voice it just doesn’t come off as being the youngest in the family and her behavior hardly changes from acting like a child to an adult. Much prefer the character change from young Kirsten Dunst to the woman that played the older Amy

It's because he could be himself with them. He felt like a natural member of the family. He belonged with their whimsical, loving group as people, not necessarily as a love interest to one of the girls, but as a brother and protector. Him and Jo being closest in age and spirit made him think he was in love. Amy was but a little girl, it never occured to him she is a much better match. Plus Amy had a lot of growing up to do emotionally as well to become a well balanced young lady instead of the ignorant child we meet in the beginning.
@gee2541
@gee2541 4 года назад
Maria Gara I can see that part of it and get that aspect of why he loved their family. But it’s just a strange and awkward way to phrase that affection. The dialogue doesn’t really emphasize what you elaborated on but makes it seem like he just wants to be a part of the family at any cost, despite his actual feelings for any of the girls. He mentions that he would be envious of any of the men the girls marry which is...weird. Maybe it’s different in the book but the movie makes his character more so creepy rather than naive and romantic.

@@gee2541: I think the film portrays him perfect, this is but one line from the film. Laurie is drunk, angry, feeling all frustrated with his failed attempt at being a musician, burned out by living the bohemian life. He needs to come down to Earth and connect. Amy rightly points this out. She has feelings for him, but no respect for how he wastes his life. I think this scene is perfect and very human.
