I don’t think that’s true. Amy is more developed in the new version, yes, but to me that just makes her more cold and calculating. We know her intentions. She’s more of a cynic, while this Amy, while always knowing she’d marry rich, isn’t doing it because she’s thinking about how men are superior to women and blah blah blah. Plus I think in this version they do a better job of Amy putting Laurie in his place and he has to come back and repent.

Akeno Chu not true. I don’t think he would have promised to kiss her before she died if he didn’t love her in some way, even if she was a child. And even if you look at it like ‘they had to get married for Amy to come home and see her sisters’, that is still love. He loved Amy enough to do her that favor, if you want to think about it that way.

The ONE flaw i see in this movie is the way they handled Laurie's and Amy's relationship...making it seem so creepy and i don't know...wrong. But in the book they develop feelings for each other in such a natural way, they grow and mature and in the process become so perfect for one another. So props to the new version cause i feel they nailed it on that.

It's been about two decades since I read the book, but the 2019 version made me feel like I finally understood it. It made Amy almost my favorite (if I don't count Meg, she would have been my absolute favorite) March girl. And I loved the portrayal of Laurie too. Beautiful characters both.

I hope I can write this properly . This isn't my language. For me it's funny, because I find the new version a bit unbalanced and disrespectful. I mean, it is good that they painted Amy in a better way, but it had to be done by putting the other sisters on the background like props? The magic of this book for me is that it shows different women issues at that time. Not just the one that looks more like and has the ideology of whats expected of modern women. And the problems are still relevant. There are women that are juged for wanting to be housewifes or women that sacrifice having a family to focus on their dreams and at some point end up feeling worried and lonely about it, there are the ones that don't find their place in the world. Not that there isn't improvements in acting, scenery, etc. But... I don't know. Something is missing. And Emma Watson had mayor issues with her accent. That being said, I never liked Laurie with Jo. But I don't see how the man who loved you to alcoholism marring your sister could have been healthy for the sisters relationship when it already was adversarial.
@gee2541
@gee2541 4 года назад
Luis Martinez Interesting because I found the directing in the new one very disorienting and unorganized as a whole. I felt like it made the story disjointed and we didn’t properly get to become attached to the characters or watch them have arcs because of the weird directing style that went back and forth. Personally was not a fan of the choices Gerwig made.

Exactly the new movie makes it look like she had a Scarlett O’Hara moment of realizing she was in love with him too late. Which is absurd because she NEVER has romantic feelings for Laurie in the book and is immediately happy and approving of him & Amy.
@Silverznight
@Silverznight 4 месяца назад
@@12classics39 I interpreted her unhappiness with the marriage between Laurie and Amy, not because of a "Scarlett O'Hara" moment, but because she was seeing that the last person that she thought would always be with her, as a friend, also was getting married - and to her sister nonetheless. The scene prior to this, she had her monologue about how she was sick of women being told that love is all that they were fit for, HOWEVER, she was so lonely. Therefore, it wasn't meant as sad because she had romantic feelings for him, but similar to her being sad when Meg was getting married. Another person was essentially leaving her.

The issue for me was that Kirsten Dunst played a point perfect Amy and the 4 girls indeed FELT like sisters. By switching the actresses later on, Samantha Mathis feels like a total stranger. Samantha was so reserved, for me, there was nothing that connected the 2 performances. And the only way we know who she is is because of the name. There is no chemistry between her and the sisters. So when they come home and Laurie’s like, here’s my wife, it’s like he’s introducing somebody new, as oppose to someone they should know.

I completely agree. The first time watching I was so confused but maybe they were going for the interpretation that she matured and they hadn’t seen her in so long so it was as if she was a completely different person coming home. They could justify it that way but nonetheless I didn’t like it. Kirsten Dunst is so talented so it just felt like a waste with the new Amy actress.

Honestly I don’t get people who ship Jo and Laurie. Maybe it’s because in every adaptation they emphasize the fact that their bond is solely based around friendship and I never see romantic chemistry between the leads but also.....she just doesn’t love that man? Like why would anyone root for them to be together romantically when Jo is always appalled at the idea of them being more than friends in every single film. She doesn’t love him. No one could change that. I still think it’s weird he ended up marrying her little sister but their marriage would have been a disaster and would have tainted their relationship forever. You can’t just force someone to have feelings for you.

This will forever be my favourite version. As much as I ADORE the casting for the new version...Florence Pugh did such an amazing job as Amy and Timothee Chamelet was soo good as Laurie. They really brought amazing chemistry to their characters. And that was probably the highlight of the new version for me. But I honestly felt the relationship between Amy and Jo suffered in the new version. It wasn't nearly as warm as it was in this version. In this version, Jo and Amy clashed a lot but ultimately loved one another so dearly that nothing could ever break them apart and I far prefer Jo's reaction of being surprised and happy at Laurie and Amy getting married. Now he truly is part of the family...and it was exactly how it should be. There was no confusion on Jo's part about whether she should have accepted Laurie's proposal. She knew her own mind and heart that she didn't feel romantically towards him and therefore could be happy that he'd found love and could be happy whilst still being a part of their family. It just felt warmer and more...right. What's more, as dearly as Laurie loved Jo, he didn't and couldn't understand her passion, her NEED to be a writer and to write, for it to be her work...he saw it only as her 'hobby'. Something that she wouldn't need to do, only if she wanted. But that's not how it was for Jo. Whereas Frederick understood Jo completely and their chemistry was wonderful. They were perfect. Here, Jo's loneliness is clear but it's her sister, her family, she wants and needs.

Double casting rarely ever works on film, Kirsten was such a wonderful young Amy but old Amy feels so stilted, and has no chemistry with any of the cast. I just don’t thing that’s double casting Amy is ever believable, the actresses never feel like they are the same person. I rather them age Amy up a bit (like in the 1933,2017,2019 versions) or them to just switch Amy and Beth’s ages (like in the 1949 version). I don’t care that it’s not book accurate, I just know that this is not it, and it really is my only issue with this version.
@laurend9829
@laurend9829 3 года назад
Double casting never works? For certain roles, it is required, even if challenging. Any role where you follow the lifetime of a character, you can't effectively have 1 person playing the exact same role at wildly different ages - except in very rare circumstances. I understand not liking the actress switch, however. I'm in agreement that Kirsten was so personable and fiery that to have her replaced by a more sombre take on Amy as a grown up feels slightly weird. However, the weakness in this film highlights the weakness of the 2019 film: I do not believe Florence Puege (sp?) as a 12 year child, played by a 24 year old actress! Having adults play children isn't really effective. The golden scenario would be that both actors play their roles perfectly and are a great fit.
@susanalopez5052
@susanalopez5052 3 года назад
@@laurend9829 the thing is it’s way easier for me to suspend my disbelief and believe that Florence’s Amy is around the same age as her sisters (let’s say 14), or he’ll maybe Older than Beth, because that’s already what most little women adaptations do. I enjoy Florence’s performance as both a bratty teen and a refined adult, but I really dislike older Amy’s performance in the 90s adaptation. And I certainly feel like specifically in film double casting rarely works unless it’s like a 5 minute scene of the character as a child, but double casting to tell two complete narratives?? It’s a no from me. It lends itself way better for TV but it’s still very hard to achieve, and not every show is good at it

I noticed that and was disappointed with the 2019 version...I guess they didnt care or know enough about history to include that....No singing or references to the Unitarian hymns they all would have sung or listened to during that time...Unitarianism is closely aligned with Transcendentialism of that time and a decent producer would have known that...Gerwig was pretty ignorant of that., I guess...During Meg's wedding in the 94 version , they sing a UU hymn that is exackly what they would have sung during that time..There was so many correct details of this film which made it so great and a timeless classic..The dumbing down of history in the 2019 version and none of the fans care either..

What's interesting to see is how the "new" Little Women adaptation always seems to portray Laurie and Amy a little bit better than the past one. The 50s adaptation barely put any effort into Laurie and Amy, to the point that it's awkward. This one took it a step further and did a much better job, but now that the 2019 is here, it pales in comparison to Florence and Timothy's interpretation.

I'm not sure if they meant it this way but the way Laurie looks at Jo...I think he's still in love with her and it makes me so uncomfortable for Amy. I'm gonna add some stuff here: I really think they could've done this sequence differently and gotten the point the book is trying to get across more efficiently. The awkward dialogue and the terrible stilted acting by adult Amy (and lack of chemistry) here was what convinced me that Laurie and Jo should have given romance a try. I'm older now and I went to see the 2019 version...much more satisfying. My point is you can't be mad at the people who still are rooting for Jo and Laurie when a scene like this exists. This is what they were given to work with. The look Amy gives Laurie at 1:38 to me reeks of INSECURITY. It's almost like she's still not sure if he loves Jo in a schoolboy crush way. Trying to reconcile this version of the movie to the book...is conflicting

The actress who plays adult Amy is awful. You're nuts for thinking this one is better
@inkkvibe
@inkkvibe 3 года назад
@@yespls4184 She has much less screen time than the rest, the new one is more focused on the sisters' adult lives while this one is more focused on their childhood. Amy's character changes/develops when she gets older, so she isn't the same spoiled brat Dunst was playing.

I think Laurie still loves Jo like most of us still love our lost lovers. It will be there. And Amy knows it and she accept him along with his love for Jo. Teddy deserves to be loved just like all of us. Its complicated I know. But lets leave him like he is. A small portion of him will still love Jo. Its alright.

I like this opinion. He may love Amy tremendously but there's always a small part of him that still have some feeling for Jo. I'm not saying that it'll grow or that he'll cheat on Amy. It is what it is.

@suebob16
@suebob16 11 месяцев назад
In fairness to Amy, in this scene she is still wearing dark colors when she comes home. She wore black and was grieving for Beth while sitting at a bench earlier when she was still overseas. As described in the book, she and Laurie married in a quiet civil ceremony, not a fancy wedding to be respectful to Beth's passing. I'm not sure where you felt that Adult Amy looked happy after Beth's death except for when she is reunited here with her family which is an appropriate reaction.
@user-sq4bh8kd1p
@user-sq4bh8kd1p 2 года назад
I still think it was selfish of Amy to go after Laurie. Although Jo does have a happy ending, there will always be a conenction between herself and Laurie. Though it took her time to figure that she was in love with him.

I hate this until today. Makes me feel so uncomfortable. I mean, Jo reaction is really the one you have when you don't have a romantic interest in another person? Like, really? I'm sorry, but Little woman has so many mistakes to me. Makes me so mad.

@millaray9912

Kari Ola That’s not the story, though. Jo was right when she said she and Laurie weren’t suited, and Jo does not love Laurie as a wife should. She talks about accepting his proposal because she is lonely and lost after Beth’s death. Laurie sees Amy as a little girl until they are in Europe together, at which point he falls in love with her. He even says that he feels something different for Amy than he ever did for Jo. Amy is who helps Laurie to grow up, and Jo also needs someone who is less like her.

They never would have worked. Laurie hated books, didn’t care much for Jo’s literature. They both were also too headstrong. Jo needed needed someone quiet, and Laurie needed someone to put him in his place one and a while.

This resentment girls have about Amy marrying Laurie is nothing more than jealousy, because anyone with half a brain can see Jo and Laurie were NOT suited to each other, I mean come ON!! I've been hearing girls whine about this forever , did you even read the book? (Probably not, since you just called Amy "Beth".) Jo herself said it would never work. Stop being so shallow and petty!

I truly believe Amy is the TRUE antagonist in this novel. I understand she was always 2nd best to Jo, but to go after her in such a manner. After burning her book, always wanting the spotlight and marrying Laurie. She KNEW how hard it was for Jo to reject Laurie, nevertheless, persists to marry him and 'show him off' in this scene.
