Trina Q People always told me what Jo tells Meg - I will achieve such great things, I could be famous and I wanted that at some point but now I just want to settle down and make a home.

And I love how this quote works both ways. I grew up in a conservative immigrant family and now, at the age of 25, everyone around me tells me that I SHOULD get a boyfriend and get married and have children, because that’s the tradition and what all my female cousins have done. But my dream has never involved that. I’ve always been the nerdy “academic” type that likes studying (I know! How can someone like studying? Even I don’t know what’s wrong with me lol), reading and writing, as well as singing and other artistic things. I am content on my own (with 2 cats) living in a small apartment with a busy job and a small circle of friends. Apart from wanting to get a job that pays better, I wish for nothing more from life. I’m easily satisfied this way. A lot of people from my family think this life path of living alone is bizarre and that I couldn’t possibly be happy without a man and a “real family”. What can I say? My dreams are just different than yours. If you cannot understand, then at least respect it. That’s all anyone could ask for.

Amy's romanticism over choosing a gloriously wealthy and legendary love so she'd never have to suffer poverty again and would have pretty things gave way to pragmatism when she realized that Aunt March was right. One of the girls needed to marry rich to ensure her family was taken care of. Meg was technically supposed to be the one to do this since she was the oldest and the most interested in high society early on but she fell in love with a poor man. Jo doesn't want to marry at all let alone for money, and Beth is far too fragile health wise to go courting. So Amy is the only hope for her family. That kind of pressure is crushing and she lost a lot of that mischievous spark she once had but she's damned determined to succeed. She's definitely my favorite.

Yeah, even since reading the book I`ve always prefered Amy over Jo and felt that Jo was kind of mean and unfair with her!!... I`m mean she would always compare her with Beth.. besides is being said that while Jo was closer to Beth, Meg was closer to Amy so each eldest sisters would defend her fave sister from the other one...besides I`m also the youngest of 4 sisters so I feel related to her in many ways 😅😁...

At first when I read the book for the first time, I admired Jo sooooo much and put her in a pedestal in my mind to where I wanted to be her...I realized that I’ve always been more like Amy...with some Beth. And some unconventionality like Jo...just a tad. PS: I used to hate Amy. Lol 😂 like legit. Now I see her in a new light and not because of the Greta Gerwig movie but because I’ve grown and that has changed my mentality. There’s NOTHING wrong with knowing what you want and that you know you are materialistically inclined.

I agree that Amy is a Slytherin, though she might fit into Gryffindor, too, and Beth is definitely a Hufflepuff. Meg is a Gryffindor, though she could probably fit into Slytherin. I see Jo as a Ravenclaw (as I am), though she could fit into Gryffindor, too. The March family as a whole fits into Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. The dad is a Ravenclaw, and Marmee is a Gryffindor, maybe a Hufflepuff. Aunt March is a Slytherin. Friedrich Bhaer is a Ravenclaw, but I'm not sure where to place Laurie or John Brooke. To the uninitiated, we're talking about the Hogwarts houses in the Harry Potter stories: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin.

Louisa Alcott was said to have had a close relationship with a young Polish man, I think in Paris. Though "Little Women" is set in U.S. civil wartime of the 1860's, Louisa was born in 1832. As I recall, she nursed during the Civil War, got some horrific disease and was treated with an equally dangerous drug like calomel (mercury), or arsenic. As I understand it she was not well most of her life. (I did a quick source check but was only able to verify her birth year and her age at time of Civil War.)

Completely agree. Being a nonconformist isn't always fun, and certainly doesn't lend to wealth unless you are insanely talented, smart, and lucky. I do love beautiful things like Amy as well, but certainly wouldn't marry for money. I love some comforts of home like Beth, but more as a place you know you are always welcome, and a place to create. And I have a desire to find love like Meg, but am content if I don't. But it is still lonely at times, I like that that was shown in the movie.

@@auksebarak760 Ace people totally exist! But why is Jo March seen as a lesbian icon? My interpretation (of her character in the movie) of her is based on her demeanor. Not every lesbian acts as Jo does, I get it, but not conforming to the traditional traits of the gender at that time is a sign for me. Also, the way she avoids marriage speaks to me in ways that remind me of myself (a lesbian). She doesn't love Laurie romantically, and doesn't want to. You can totally see her as you want to.

Both the Alcott the author, Jo March the character, and Saiorse Ronan, the actress give me gay vibes ( Sersh comes across as handsome not as feminine pretty as Emma Watson does).. marrying Jo was a convention of the times. Greta Gerwing version has dragged Jo gay vibes in the open... and has done justice to Amy the kind of strong heterosexual women people often calls a bitch.. I bet Greta is a Amy person in the real world. Flo Pugh was the best part of the movie for me.

Like you say being kind is important and I obviously 100% agree, but that is what ultimately killed her. 🤷 That she was always putting others first and never thinking about herself so I think the moral is you have to be selfish and put yourself first sometimes, 🤷 A good and nice character yes, but I don't think good and nice always nessecarily go with with how you should live your life

@@Silvercentipede I understand where you are coming from. That is definitely the impression that one gets from the movies for sure. At first reading, Beth might seem just as two-dimentional as in those movies, but you don't need to dig too deeply to find more to her. For instance, in the first chapter, she seemed to be the most caught up in the rehearsal for the play they were to put on that Christmas day. At one point Jo quoted a line from MacBeth as she saw a famous actor do, only to be told by Meg, "No, it's the toasting fork, with Mother's slipper on it instead of the bread. Beth is stagestruck!" She confessed her burden to her sister "Yes I do. Mine is dishes and dusters and envying girls with nice pianos and being afraid of people." She seemed to be forgetful. The most extreme example was during the chapter Experiments. She was(spoilers) described as constantly forgetting it was to be all play and no work, showing herself also to be a creature of habit. But the worst example of forgetfulness was (again, spoilers)when she forgot to feed her canary and he ended up dying. Much to her heartbreak. She loved animals as much as she loved her family and music. Also that chapter seemed to show something interesting about her tranquility. It seemed she couldn't keep her serenity as well when she had no work to do? Or when her surroundings was unusually chaotic? I might be off here, but maybe routine helped her keep calm? The kind where her hands are busy and her mind free to daydream? For earlier the author made it clear that she seemed to live in a world of her own, only coming out to meet the few she trusted and loved. And another time saying she was neither lonely more idle because her world was peopled with imaginary friends and she was by nature a busy bee. I could go on, having barely scratched the surface but I won't in this post. Like I said, I can relate with her and other characters like her. The quiet often strike those who are more extroverted as dull, but remember that still water runs deep.

Congratulations on being a woman. The March sisters are not 2D characters, like women in other forms of fiction and popular culture, but most women, who are also deeply complicated beings with varying different characteristics, talents, dreams and ambitions, don't fall neatly into any rigidly defined stereotype or structured personality. That's the fundamental problem with the premise of this RU-vid video. Still doesn't stop the video from being fun, just means that it doesn't even touch the surface of what real-life women are really like.

I think that she's more of a Meg when she was a girl. However, I think, when she grows older, she becomes more of an Amy but still retains some of the characteristics of Meg.

I feel Sansa always fitted into the Amy profile. She didn't really want to have a family life for its own sake like Meg - Sansa wanted to shine, to be admired as the perfect lady and wife with the perfect, loving husband and the fairytale life. She wanted to be successful while conforming to how her society measured success. She was the traditional girly girl, she loved nice clothes and other luxuries, she was a little vain, admired beauty a great deal, she was ambitious and went to some lenghts to get what she wanted (lying to King Robert about the Arya vs Joffrey fight). By the end of her time in the Eyrie, Sansa shifted somewhat from wanting love and a Prince Charming to wanting power and control over her own fate (which she succeeded at getting in the show).

I think it's because Jo has always been a favorite, so she's now considered "overrated".

It because Jo has been the ideal women archetype in popular culture for the last 30 years. But during that time, figures like Amy or Meg have been sidelined and regarded as relics of a patriarchal past. The movie just reminded everyone that there no one ideal women, but many little woman that should be understood and celebrated.

100% agree. She always seems like a side character or afterthought almost, even if she does have a huge part. As someone with chronic illnesses I look up to her bravery and perseverance that she had even when sick. I relate to her in every aspect and I think she deserves more credit.

I always related most to Amy when I read the book too, and I also felt sad when she was hated (kinda felt like they were hating me since felt so similar to her lol). I think shaming strong femininity is just another form of sexism, so I love this new take on the book because it shows there's no one way to be a woman and they all have valid life decisions. You can be traditionally masculine or traditionally feminine, sweet and quiet or independent and rowdy. True feminism is about freedom regardless if whether your male or female.

Samantha Young I agree with most of what you said except for Laurie not loving. He definitely did, and even more than that, he needed her. He was growing lazy and losing sight of his future and Amy’s realism brought him back to that. And Laurie was there when Amy needed him most, when Beth died and she wasn’t there, Laurie was her connection to home.

I have a younger sister who is like Amy, has always wanted what I have and gotten what she wanted. (Im very Jo I think.) And I feel like i used to hate her when we were younger. But as we grew up I started to understand why she did the things she did. And it softened my gaze. And we now have a better relationship than we did.

It shocks me that Amy was looked down. So many I know are like her. To me, I think they looked down on Amy because she knew how to play at society's rules. It's either to rebel or follow them in people's eyes when she followed the 3rd and hidden path. This is just me but knowing that a lot of women have had low self-esteem since the beginning of society makes me think that many disliked her from also seeing many similarities with her. Obviously, I am looking too much into it. In the end, I am a lot like Beth who can't help on admiring those who are like Amy + Beth. I am a feminist so it makes me sad to know that so many men and women think that feminism thinks we are supposed to have jobs, get rid of marriage when there is nothing wrong with wanting to carry strong feminity.

I always identified with Amy, since childhood. I paint so my childhood brain made the logical connection. After I grew up a bit I started understanding her approach even better, she believed that her talent is not what will help her succeed and I agree with that.

I always loved Amy ! I haven’t watch the latest little women yet, but I 100% get behind Amy. I want art, but I also want confort, stability and love. I could never really get behind Joe completely because « I want to be great or nothing ». I’ve always been ridiculously ambitious but, even if I tried not to be, I’m really feminine and I don’t want to live in poverty. If playing in society’s standards is what gets me what I want, I will, and I will use it to make a positive change in said society.

Little women is my favorite book of all time and I truly relate to Amy in the book and I never understood why she was classified as the brat. Sure she burned Jo’s book but she was just a child and she grew up. When the PBS series for little women came out i was so excited because I liked that they finally included a bit more of Laurie and Amy falling in love. My friends never understood my love of Amy and they stood by Jo being the best March sister (we’re high school students) but I still loved Amy and dreamed of my own Laurie. Now that the new movie came out my friends understand why I love Amy (although I still think that they could have put in more of Amy’s own kindness and the effort she put in to better herself). My best friend, Lily, and I have become accustomed to calling one another Meg and Amy since she’s like the elder and I like the younger sister. We used to dream of finding love, a John for her and a Laurie for me. Shortly before quarantine she found her John Brooke. I still hope to find my Laurie. Anyway, I didn’t start loving Amy when Greta’s movie came out, I loved her from the first time I read Little Women when I was 14. I admired her passion for art, ambition, and realism whilst still being a romantic. Laurie and Amy are my OTP (outside of Lily and her real life John Brooke) and I will always love both of their characters. I hope to become more like Amy by trying to better myself as she did and pursue my dreams and art (i play piano, act, dance, and sing but can’t draw to save my life). Though some of my friends see me as a kind Beth or loving Meg, I’ll always be an Amy.

Lauren you’re the reason why people hate feminist today

Indeed, Jo comes across as judgemental to those women in her life who want to have a traditional family role or be traditionally feminine, both Amy and Meg and yes even Beth. On the other hand Jo's sisters are much more accepting of her ways than she is of them. Even Meg who initially tries to get Jo to behave more ladylike, gets Jo far more than Jo ever understand her sisters and that understanding comes to Meg early on in Little Women (and before Good wives). Jo, on the other hand is so busy railing against her position in life she can't put herself in other people's shoes. There is nothing wrong with Jo's non conformity it's her self absorption that is the issue. Interestingly this attitude is the case in modern society for the most part among feminists as exampled above in the comments. It is far more acceptable to be a career driven woman than one who is content with a traditional female role. Even further exampled and exemplified in the video by the way they treat Beth's character as 'too submissive'. She wasn't submissive, she was selfless. There's a difference. She had agency, she used that agency to care for others.

@@Miluielle Oh, definitely. The unjust thing is that all those weak "femenine" qualities are celebrated as good in "woke" men, but are still shamed as weak and anti-feminist in women. It is as if modern society thinks that the only "good qualities" in women are the ones associated traditionally with men. I know what you mean. While I love books and writing like Jo and have a beauty loving nature like Amy, I most relate to Beth. The only things that get me mad is when someone or something is being treated unfairly or when my environment is too chaotic and noisy/angry. I love sharing what I write and draw, but am perfectly content if they stay in my head, prefer it to be honest because when I try to capture what's in there, I only get a pale imitation of the beauty of my daydreams and that is discouraging. Plus I don't think people don't get how hard it is to be so timid and scared. I am scared of everything, it seems. Fear like that controls everything you do, and it takes so much more effort to do what others take for granted. I deal with it by my reading and daydreams, my spiritual life and focusing on making others feel loved and comfortable. That brings me peace. Also cats. Like Beth, I am a patron of cats. I bet if Beth lived today, she'll have a RU-vid channel full of videos of her kitties. Thank you.

She is a nonconformist idealist who dares to go her own way. _ Amy is a Ravenclaw with Slytherin tendency. In fact, she can be sorted into either house and still excel. Why ? Amy is ambitious just like Jo is in pursuing her dream but she also has fervent love for knowledge and fascination with history as well as tradition. Unlike Jo, Amy is a realist and proceeds life with logics. _ Meg is a total Hufflepuff because she does not seek vanity and values hardwork and loyalty. She would sometimes succumb to vanity but eventually choose to do the right thing in the end. _ Beth is a Ravenclaw with Hufflepuff personality for she values her pursuit of knowledge (evidently via her love of improving her skill in piano) above all else but she is also kind and loving. Because she possesses Hufflepuff quality, she is loyal and family-oriented. Nevertheless, the sorting hat will have a hard time deciding whether Beth should be sorted into Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw UNLESS she asks to be in Hufflepuff specifically. P/S: Please stop treating Slytherins like they are the villains. The truth is that Slytherins are complex in real life. They can become your best of friends or worst enemies depending on how you treat them. They can be the greatest heroes or the most twisted antagonists.

I remember the part when the author narrate how Beth silently cry in front of her piano coz that's the only dream that she have which is music but she understood that is impossible to reach.

I feel like I am like Amy but the only difference is that I don’t know what my passion/ambition is. Amy had a passion and achieved that with her pragmatism. I feel like I have that pragmatism it’s just I don’t know how to use it. Like chandler in friends who says that he doesn’t have a passion, yet he wants to be passionate about something but doesn’t know what. Same with me.
