What’s the Little Women movie about?
Four middle-class girls, Meg (Trini Alvarado), Jo (Winona Ryder from Heathers and Beetlejuice), Beth (Claire Danes from Romeo + Juliet and The Rainmaker) and Amy (Kirsten Dunst from Jumanji and The Virgin Suicides) live in Concord, Massachusetts with their mother and a faithful maid named Hannah. Their father, a Northerner, is himself on the front lines of the Civil War. It was while growing up together that Jo discovered a talent for writing, encouraging her sisters to act in plays and bickering with her little sister Amy. Meg falls in love with a man she marries, much to Jo's chagrin and her fear that the siblings will be separated. Beth, the third and most discreet, always concerns about the good of others, ends up getting sick with rubella and barely survives. Jo struggles to become a novelist. Amy lives in a world of socializing thanks to a great-aunt who has made a point of taking care of her. Meg becomes a mother. Beth's fate is more tragic.

That moment when Jo is looking out the window, and she knows that when she turns around, Beth will be gone. You can see it in her eyes. Superb acting by Winona Ryder and Claire Danes both.

When I first read the Little Women series, I HATED Louisa (the author) for Beth's death. I mean, I was like...how could she do such a thing to her? But then, as I grew older and learned more of life, family, and reality, I understood why Louisa did it - loss is a fundamental part of life, something that each and every family had to deal with sooner or later, and things can never be 100% perfect, and I think that was what Louisa was trying to tell everyone through Beth's death. Also, as heartbreaking and even unspeakable as it was, Beth's death was a major part of what helped her sisters - especially Jo - to grow and mature even further, an evolution as well as an understanding that they could not have achieved without this tragedy. Rest in peace, Elizabeth March. Gone but never forgotten.

This is actually real life inspiration Alcott and her sisters Elizabeth March is inspired by Lizzie Alcott who died at the age of 23

Claire Danes portrays Beth perfectly in this film; the awkward, introverted shyness but the deep and loving affection she has for her family and others. Even the timbre of her voice in this scene is so well performed; with the wavering sadness but sure acceptance of her impending death, with just that raspy hint of wheeze and breathlessness to hint at the congestive heart failure brought on by the scarlet fever.

I think that she showed how under all the shyness Beth was fiercely brave, brave enough to conquer a real life battle which was different from the one's in Jo's stories.

Confusion on Beth dying: Originally Little Women was published as two volumes: Little Women (1868) and Good Wives (1869). Usually they are combined these days. Beth gets sick and recovers somewhat in Little Women, but eventually dies in Good Wives.
