Fun fact: Claire Danes was not scripted to cry for this scene. She just did because she got so emotional for Beth, and everyone was stunned for a moment. Then they started weeping as well. Claire Danes is a wonderful actress!

Beth is my literary hero. As a shy and kind person myself, she is everything that I aspire to be. She had the gift of music and gave the gift of self sacrifice. The world of literature and the world at large, she is based on one of Louisa May Alcott’s sisters, is blessed to have her spirit forever and always. Claire Danes did a fantastic job at playing her in this beautiful adaptation.

I know the 2019 is such a breath of fresh air. But, this 1994 one was and still is the most iconic one. The ensemble cast and the acting was on point each single one of them. I personally prefer Claire Danes's acting out of them all. Exceptionally superb!

I say 1994 is far superior than 2019 version Some minus point for 2019 version - Relatively dragged screenplay - casting of Meg March. What was Greta upto that time..? - Beth march was shown as a kid despite being third born. Looks younger than Amy, who is actually the youngest March sister - 2019 never shown directly how Beth got infected by scarlet fever. Maybe I might have missed that part. Apart from that, Christian Bale has given us the best Laurie and best Batman in cinema history. Winona Ryder (Mama Joyce Byers), the best Jo March.

The 2019 version is like seeing Little Women in the eyes of Louisa May Alcott, but this one is like reading the book. It’s more emotional, heartwarming and poetic. Winona Ryder is also the superior Jo. Love this version ❤️❤️

I feel like Florence actually did Amy justice since the newer movie made her character way more likeable and like that they didn't change the actress halfway through the movie because I didn't connect with older Amy is the 1994 version. The 2019 version also makes Amy and Laurie's relationship more convincing, this version makes him slightly creepy (which I never realised as a child), when he's confronting Amy and saying he just wants a March sister. That being said, everything else I prefer the 1994 version, and it will always be nostalgic for me

I literally just started to watch this movie because the actresses of Jo and especially Beth fascinated me. I saw a trailer and I saw this versions Beth and something unique and peacefull was about her... I was not disappointed, this actress did an amazing job at portraying Beths highly sensitive and innocent nature. I wonder what the 2019 version is like. I cannot imagine a better Beth than her.
@Ktayjacks
@Ktayjacks 4 года назад
JasminTheDreamer In my opinion and going off of your personal experience, you might be disappointed with 2019’s portrayal of Beth. Great acting, but Beth and her intimate relationship with Jo wasn’t obvious, which is a crime. When Beth’s death came, I wasn’t particularly moved mostly because of how the story was told. In my opinion, Claire Danes’ as Beth performance in this film was perfectly nuanced and didn’t play on our emotions unfairly. The 2019 version is a good film, but in my eyes, it doesn’t compare to this version.

Jo was in love with the idea of BEING loved when she had finally accepted she was lonely, but she couldn’t say that she loved Laurie. She loved Fredrick in the end. I think it was the right choice to have Amy and Laurie together. Amy was a lot more likeable in the book and the new version.

@@LilyWaterfall According to the timeline of the novel Amy was 12 and Laurie was 15. The age gaps between Meg and John and Jo and Friedrich were much larger, however I agree with you that these scenes don't work. The trouble is Kirsten Dunst looks like a child, whilst Christian Bale looks like an adult. Although I can't imagine other actors playing these characters, this was a real casting error. I always wondered why they didn't have those scenes (Laurie holding Amy/Amy talking about being kissed) in the section of the film after Meg's wedding but before Amy went to France. I love this film so much, but those scenes just aren't appropriate.

even more so, it was during a period when there was great economic turmoil, war and scarce resources... the "Little Women" household just barely kept their home and for the time period it was set it in, families like these had taken to selling most of their belongings to survive, even down to knobs on drawers, sometimes greater bits of the house itself in a bid to keep a roof over their head. . . otherwise the options were moving rural or to the city, where in both cases you had large families living in a single rooms. also, toss in the neo trascendentalist movement and those values being tested in the extreme. This would be a frivolous yet priceless gift. Albeit for Beth and her failing health, this is the thread that keeps her alive and a direction to explore her own interests as her sisters grow up and one by one leave... an outlet as valauble as a wheelchair or a new heart. And it was no small gift for him, even if he was in a better state of finances... so, it's akin to letting go of some of his own security and besides, he associates it with the memory of his late granddaughter, whom is the large reason he gifts it to her... so, the sentimental value is immeasurable.

I hate the new Little Women. Does not come close to this one. It’s not just different. The story jumps back and forth in time so much even a long time fan who knows the story well will have a hard time following the story.

One of the best films I’ve watched in 2019. Never watched or read little woman but only heard talk surrounding the book years ago. The movie was so easy to follow and Greta made the movie feel so natural and easy to follow. The color grading of the film is easily distinguishable and makes it easy to tell where the story is in time. A true gem

I never knew much about the story and I also found Little Women 2019 to be easy to follow :)

Timothee Chalomet is insufferable. Glad this version holds up so well.

I feel as though I am the only one that did not care for Claire D. as Beth. Beth was the smallest of all of the sisters due to a weak heart and poor health and Claire towered over all of her sisters. It was also odd seeing her in pig tails acting so young when I’m seeing the tallest sister. I also thought she was a little melodramatic. In the making of the movie they did try to hide her height by keeping her on lowered stairs and seated, that just made it more obvious. My favorite Beth was Margaret O’Brien.

Beth was thirteen at the start of the story. She was fourteen when she became ill. The illness made her frail, but, that didn't mean she was necessarily short. When I was thirteen, I was already 5'8", and towered over my mother and my sister (who was eighteen.)

But, I do agree that Margaret O'Brien was the perfect Beth!

I do enjoy Margaret's performance as well, but Claire is a very special Beth as well. Both girls did phenomenal work with Beth's character, but Margaret honestly made me sob, because, she was at the time, only 12. Claire was 14, so both girls were very similar to Beth's character, which I enjoy.

I love Beth In the book but this Beth never seemed ‘real’ to me, can’t relate her to the character

I mean I definitely do, but I might be biased because I enjoy any actor who plays Beth, but I mean, she really did her best and I enjoyed it.

I'm sorry I know so many people love this movie but am I the only one who thinks Beth's expressions are weird and make me uncomfortable?

Andrea Pérez Palma while you are absolutely entitled to your opinion, i personally don’t think so.

Pip Mitchell nope. remember, she’s acting a role, showing raw emotion in the way of the character! :) it’s not supposed to look ”pretty” (tho she does look that).

Milasia completely disagree. She’s a talented actress but Saoirse Ronan is the next Meryl Streep. 26 years old and 4 Oscar nominations, you can’t beat that.

@@finaltwo Not the Jo in the spirit of the novel. Winona has these peculiar expressions that render her character better.
