Most gamers know Sephiroth regardless of if they have played FF7 and a lot of them are hype too. Im hyped and I knew who it was after the 2nd note of the song played and ive never even played FF7.

I'm not a FF7 fan, but i am a massive fan of iconic gaming characters, and Final Fantasy in general and watched Advent children multiple times and loved it as a teenager. I knew who it was immediately as the music came in and he was floating in the sky, so your comment is completely wrong.

I mean it's so unrelatable that only japan can come up with that shit and sell it to us. Yeah definitely no problem with not knowing who he is. For me sephiroth, crash, ratchet and clank and hollow knight/hornet are my most wanted characters for smash so i got really hyped when i saw this. But yeah i both don't like the people who hate the character for the sake of hating on them or because their character didn't get in, and also don't like the ff7 fans that bash other people because they disliked sephiroth coming in. People just need to be more accepting

The age gap really shows itself when you have people who recognize his theme and the black wing, but are totally confused by his Safer Sephiroth final smash because they never played the original boss fight lol

He tries to Omnislash him, like how he beat him in the game, and Sephiroth remembers, and counters it, so Cloud has to upgrade it a bit, hence, Ver. 5. Definitely gonna be specifically against Sephiroth.
