A small hidden note on Yi Archers and Yi Marksmen that I found out after this video that both are able to fire whilst moving, which makes them significantly better than I thought they were. Not the most important trait to have, but it means their melee stats become even more important as they almost get a flanking role of sorts.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP mine paypal account was empty. So can not pay for it. Yes creditcard i do not have. We in thr netherland use ideaal payment where this webside do not have. So buy it on steam use ideaal payment. Need to change want to buy it on that webside.
Should probably edit that into the video at the end there bud. Are there other ranged units that can fire while moving? I find them useful when chasing down fleeing enemies.
Don't even joke. China being one of the oldest and still existing civilizations, they invented a shit ton of stuff. They say football (soccer) was invented by the English but China was already kicking a ball around thousands of years ago.

MrOrdgar It is a joke , Liu bei got beaten by cao cap an left his infant son behind, zhao yunsaved the son by risking his life to dive into cao cao ‘s army 7 times and recused him, he try to throw the baby to the ground because it is the reason that caused zhao yun to risk his life.
Cao Cao: if we go through on that bridge we can capture liu bei Zhang Fei: Just through on my dead body Cao Cao: you can't just hold my entire army alone Zhang Fei: hold my wine

Hey SmartDonkey! I think I know why the archers are good in melee. The three generals you start with have very low cunning, meaning low ammo. I think the archers are expected to run out of ammo quickly, so rather than make them useless after that happens, then you can just send them into melee instead of just throwing them away for no reason. That was probably the idea behind them.
Liu Bei is nuts! I've won 3 battles on little to no forces left only because his insane morale buffs kept my guys in the fight while Zhang Fei and Guan Yu killed all of their generals and hammered/anvil-ed them LOL
One thing I've found is that Liu Bei is the character that can best get away with capturing the Emperor. Capturing the Emperor makes the Han your vassal, but annexing Han territory becomes trickier. Where Liu Bei's special annexation mechanic allows you to keep the Han as a vassal, but still annex their territory.
It’s a nice sentiment and idea, but even with multiple dread stacks there’s no nice way that I’ve found to confederate other factions in the early game with Liu Bei, which kind of nullifies the benefits of even having that ability from start.
@MrSmartDonkeyLP Great video mate - definitely one of the most cerebral total war players on a campaign map. Just a suggestion but your channel might benefit from more reviews and making use of that strong analytical mindset.
I really liked your Shogun 2 Overview videos so it's awesome to see you doing the same thing for Three Kingdoms! My vote is for Cao Cao or Sun Jian next.
This ain't Warhammer Lothern Sea Guard dude, cav still rekt em and for their price the enemy can get 1 archer and 1 melee unit. Although I think they would be great when put on wall, can shoot and repel all climbers.
Yi archers are great imo! Other archers become useless once they run out of ammo, even the more heavily armored ones. Yi archers on the otherhand can function as a flanking unit and could actually deal a good amount of damage doing so. As for the militia upkeep, it’s more of a mid/late game bonus when you have many army slots. I like having high tier units on a few “attacker” armies and the rest stay with high level militia, functioning as defensive militia armies.
Doesn't he have an attack skill that lets him deal 75K damage in one shot? I think the average general's hp maxes out at 50K and even champions have a hard time getting above 70K hp.
Liu's unique units sounded indeed pretty terrible. I see the point of melee gunners because they can't shoot overhead and it's not easy to reposition them shoot from enemy's flanks without exposing them to enemy cavalry so melee after close quarter contact with enemy frontline instead of skirmishing retreat makes sense. However, for archers on the other hand, you want them to be constantly shooting throughout the battle or until they ran out of arrows, and I doubt these increased melee stats will be enough to allow them to handle cavs on their own in melee. I don't think CA will make another obviously OP unit like Foot Samurai ever again, so I doubt these Shu archers will be that...
Honestly, I've found in my current Cao Cao campaign that my archers run out of ammo in almost every battle, so being decent in melee might be worthwhile to me just to make them still be useful.
Since in the Romance story line, Liu Bei is supposed to get help from Zhuge Liang (and maybe Pang Tong if CA added them?) who are great strategists, and maybe there might be good synergy there with the Yi Archers?
Yi archers and marksmen are great for scoring heroic victories if you're fighting a numerically superior force. Have them hide in the woods and use your legendary heroes to kite enemy units and gank enemy generals until they are exhausted with low morale. Then kite the enemy to your hidden archers and watch the enemy melt.
I don't think they've yet fixed the "confederate with Liu Biao" event. I've never seen it happen. That and there're still occasions where the Zhao Yun event doesn't trigger.
Yep, still buggy as hell. I enjoy the game but alot of the diplomatic glitches can make it a pain. I find Liu Bei's campaign always the hardest and ALWAYS turns into a goddamn slog where I have to do every battle for nearly the first 50 turns. Sun Jian or Cao is by far so goddamn easy or Emperor Liu- crushing the Yellow turbans wonders why he actually failed in real life.. oh wait nvm
Wow, this is the pre-launch content I really wanted to see! Great work man. Would love to see Cao Cao or Sun Jian next, but with quality like this I'd be happy to see anything.
As Liu Bei is not married at the start, I wonder what the best marriage options are. Are their any nearby lords with possible marriages? How soon do you want to get married so you can have a kid and a clearer heir?
Probably have the best generals at the time. Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Ma Chao, Huang Zhong, and Zhuge Liang. Fucking Guan Yu is still worshipped to this day.
Calling Liu Bei poor is a historical misconception. He was poor when compared to all of his high born or the extremely wealthy peers (the Han version of Billionaire heirs) of the time. However, he was never subjected to living standard anywhere remotely close to peasantry. His wealthy highborn uncles regularly helped out his household expenses and procured and paid his education at Han China equivalent of Harvard and Yale. His household finance was basically equivalent of a disgraced aristocrat who eloped with some commoner but still gets handouts from his principle family discreetly all the time. Again, his upbring was only poor when compared to highborn lords with significant landholdings. He might perceive himself as a commoner due to the inferiority complex developed as a downtrodden Aristocrat lack of economic security growing up. Can't imagine he get many nice things said about him and his family growing up in schools for highborn lads. He basically got the "Jon Snow" childhood and, as a result, developed a "Jon Snow" mentality. The principle house of Liu Bei is the Imperial House by the way and his great grandfather is a emperor, so how poor can he truly be really...
Haha I wish, making this video probably took about 12-15 hours from writing the script to recording and editing it all together, and that’s not including playing the game to actually learn what I need to know make an informed video. I will certainly be doing more of these, but it’ll take a few weeks/months to get them all done. I will try to do another one before release though.
Is it possible to introduce the characters who will join Liu Bei’s faction in the mid game by events? Like Zhuge Liang and Zhao Yun? Make even the Repeat crossbow units from the mid game?
You mean in a separate video? Perhaps, I'll certainly be doing unit overviews at some point so I'll be showcasing all units, in regards to the Legendary characters, I didn't include them in this video as they're not a part of your faction from the start, but I could showcase them in a separate video sometime, I have plenty of plans for videos like this, don't worry.
If I had lived back then I think I would be a cross between this guy and Cao Cao, if that makes sense. I like to be morally good and forthright but I’m not afraid to get my hands a little dirty for the greater good (or I admit in occasional lapses of selfishness)
Aaaah, gotcha, yeah, I figured I should have some Chinese music rather than Japanese music in the background for these, took me a while to find a good track but I think this one is perfect.
After a couple of playtests I found out a couple of things about liu bei 1st during the conflict with Cao Cao who I would recommend to completely destroy him there is good chance that xiahu dun , hiaxu yuan or lady bian will join you (don't bother with bian she can be a pain to deal with) 2nd after you destroy Cao Cao declare war against yuan shao (if you refuse his deals makes it quite likely that he will declare war but he will take time to come at you) 3rd if you recruit zhang yian don't put him in and administrator position (he has a trait that boosts corruption if I remember correct ) 4th after you confederate tao qian don't expect any other confederations liu bao especially can be a pain 5th marry liu bei to the daughter of liu dai she is a commander and she liu bei like each other (pretty much guarantee happened in every playthtrough) on side note 1 if you want sun ren to join adopt guan yu and zhang fei or ma Cao if you have him then marry her to any of them (both work) side note 2 if you want sun ce I got no idea other than just pray that sun jian doesn't die (it happens a lot these days) feedback appreciated and if anyone has a guide for getting the 5 tiger generals thank you in advance
So basically you tell me if i keep guan yu and zhang fei together they will cancel each others weakness fei will beat regular guys while yu keeps him safe from officers
Im dumb how do I see what units fall into the reduce upkeep and which doesnt... like everytime with these games they same a name but mot all the units can easily be identified as using that rank... for example I would have thought that the yi marksman and militia archers are literally the same type of warriors but one is an elite the other isnt.. how the heck am I suppose to know that yi doesnt make part of this but the others somehow do.. Is there a way I can see what each faction and each unit benefit from these type of bonuses without being a military hierachy genius?
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP thanks man.. great videos very informative.. funny enough that answer sounds more like im dumb.. i thought I had too look for every unit that counts as infantry or whatver.. sigh.. lol thx.. Hey btw are you going to make more faction overviews? I would love one about dong zhou :) hartelijk bedank!
Are the general stats shown in Romance mode or Records mode? And do they differ when changing mode? And would love to see Ma Teng next (not a popular vote..)
With Liu Bei not starting in control of a province, is it feasible to choose another place in the game to establish yourself or does the supply mechanic limit the distance you can go?
One thing I have to comment about Yi Archer/Marksman is that they sounds like almost the copy of Foot Samurai from Shogun 2 Rise of the Samurai. And Foot Samurai is extremely overpowered there to the point that even if you config them for archery by recruiting them in the Province with Craft instead of Blacksmith they still inflicting heavy losses in melee when compared to Bow Samurai or Bow Warrior Monk in vanilla Shogun 2 game. I'm suspecting that Yi Archer/Marksman will not be that far off from RoTS Foot Samurai in practical performance.
Nah, this is a completely different story, their melee stats are good compared to other archers but compared to actual melee units at the same cost, not so much. They only have a little over half the health too so they still die pretty fast. Foot Samurai in RotS was a melee unit with a bow, Yi Archers and Marksman are just archers with slightly better melee stats.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP I guess that's a good thing. RotS campaign eventually boils down to Foot Samurai spamfest in the end game as other units are just meh there. So this should balance things out in my opinion. Thanks for clarification.
Yeah, I thought about that too when I was recording that. Not really as big a deal in a strategy game with thousands of men compared to an RPG with only a handful though.
Unfortunately not planning on doing any until the game is fully done with no more updates or DLC because the ones I have done are already somewhat outdated due to the updates and DLC released up til now.
MrSmartDonkeyLP Thanks! Any chance you’ll do some sort of thorough campaign infrastracture guide for Three Kingdoms? I remember nailing it down in Shogun 2 took me quite a bit longer than getting good at battles and campaign movement tricks/strategy. If there was a guide like this, it could’ve saved me a lot of time with a calculator :P
