Not sure why so much hate. She has been a successful pro player for years and is presenting basic templates for poker in one hour. This basic information has made her alot of money from ppl who refuse to abide because they believe it's luck or they get too cute with their style trying to emulate a pro or some cool guy in their imagination. Ofcourse it takes years of experience to master so you need to play thousands of hands. It's not for everyone.

Its not a good presentation when it goes over the heads of the listeners. It doesn't even matter how smart they are, if they haven't played at a certain level(not $ level but hours spent on thinking or using solvers), they wont get this. Presentation must be much more simple, and less specific. Hand examples should have been scrapped all together, except the live reads.

The combinations shown at 4:40 are misleading. For any two cards there are 78 ways to get a pocket pair, 312 ways to get a suited hand and 936 ways to get an off-suit hand. This results in a ratio of 1-4-12 rather than 6-4-12 as shown in the video. Other than that slight caveat I have nothing but positive things to say about this presentation, keep it up!

She clearly is intelligent. There is no doubt an analytical aspect based on odds in poker. However, I find it interesting that younger players tend to dominate at the highest levels so there seems to be a factor perhaps about focus endurance that makes a difference. Most players recognized for being at the top of their games and considered world-class don't keep it up for too many years and you see many of them flame out and go broke. Like many other sports, athletes don't stay at their peak for long even with a mental game like poker.

AI is scary, but poker isn't chess. Poker is a game which combines an understanding of probabilities and the idiosyncratic tendencies of opponents with (let's be honest here) random fortune. Chess is a game of absolutes which can be calculated so that the 'right' play is not affected by variance. The world's most powerful computer can't accurately predict a fish hitting his card on the river after donk betting his rags. For this reason, AI can never truly 'solve' poker. Far more worrying than AI is collusion, super-using and the rigging of games by disreputable sites.
@jaycheng5924
@jaycheng5924 2 года назад
The key concept to understand is that poker isn’t limited to one hand. If you understand math and putting your money in when the probability of winning are in your favor, then over time and over a large enough sample size, you will be printing money like poker is your personal atm machine. It’s comparable to being the house in a casino, the house always has the edge mathematically, which is why they always win in the long run. Sure some people get lucky and win sometimes, but they always give it back and more.
@emdiar6588
@emdiar6588 2 года назад
@@jaycheng5924 I know. The game is a continuous one and no one game, much less hand, stands alone in any meaningful way. GTO bots are just playing the numbers game, and I get it. It's a sound strategy as long as you can walk the line between consistency and predictability.. I have often comforted my self, post bad beat, that occasionally getting coolered on the bubble is proof that I am making +EV plays, lifetime.

Seems like everyone here is more interested in the presenter instead of what she presented. I looked closely at those charts and they are either misinterpreted or the algorithm is completely wrong. If you take a look at the chart where it shows the flop of 9c8s3d, the pair of 8s is in YELLOW! The presentation of the graphs is not quite clear so I had to blow them up but I believe the odds for bet big should include the pair of 8s and pair of 9s but they are in yellow! If you look at the chart with the Turn and the River, the pair of Jacks is again in Yellow! I'm confused about these charts.

I stopped watching this at 10:00. At any poker table, there's really no way to assume anyone's possible hole cards unless you have seen their hole cards based on their bet /raise styles. Do they like draws? Pocket pairs? Ace with high kickers? Bets on low/mid pairs? The last thing you want to do when you are heads up with ANY player is to have the wrong "assumption" that they have a wide range of hands you know you can beat, when in reality, you are an underdog while they have the best hand waiting to take ALL your money...
@atfti
@atfti Год назад
That's not a wide range at all, in fact, that's REALLY narrow. 1300+ combos down to 57?? How is that at all wide? If you reach this point and see what their most likely holdings are, you should only continue with hands that beat that range more often than not. No one knows the hole cards till they're flipped, but the deductive process is key

I mean, this was really interesting. But the title is super misleading. Her presentation was mostly about Game Theory Optimal vs Exploitative, and then question were about her personal experiences and background. Not much science-y stuff.

What's the exact rationale for saying it's optimal to open 50% on the button? I'd intuitively expect you should open more than that.

OsefKincaid commenting years later hoping you’ll see. The rationale is that it’s a program trying to describe GTO (game theory optimal). GTO is the idea that how you’re playing is unbeatable. You can never be beaten if you play optimally against a non-optimal player. So what the program is saying is that, on the button, 50% of the ~3600 possible starting hands are playable on the button if you’re striving to achieve perfect GTO. It’s a bit more complex than that, as Boree described, because it’s assuming you’re against a non-optimal player which can be exploited. Most of the time you’re not playing GTO and you’re opponent isn’t either.

The game has changed much from when I was young, but I believe it has "peaked" in terms of theory *on the decision making end*. This is because of what I call "final outcome" or, the end result of the termination of a hand; it's binary. Therefore, theoretically, you can flip a coin to make plays. This is still much more complex than, say, chess which is pure math, or even go as Liv states. However, in games such as American football, there's not only the deep analysis on the front-end, plus in-game, but the outcomes are much more varied.

It will never be like chess because in chess GTO is always the best play.

The title suggest the science behind poker, and Liz begins with mentioning Nash equilibrium strategies and then suggests to deviate. The 'science' behind this reasoning is less mathematical and opens oneself up to theoretical exploits and massive deviations and just generally being lost from what optimal might actually look like can lead to endless loss in EV. I suggest keeping to what is known and simply trying to approximate that. You'll have enough work cut out for you just trying to do that. Also, to deviate from baseline, one would need to know what baseline looked like. Just saying. Be carful with the advice that the so called "pros" hand out. Do your own research!
