February 24, 2021: For Cast iron Wednesday this evening, we're presenting the next part of our series on vintage cast iron pans. This time we're looking at the longest lasting and probably most famous cast iron manufacturer of all: Lodge Cast Iron. Lodge has produced a lot of cast iron cookware in its 124 year history, and there's a good chance you probably have at least one Lodge pan your kitchen right now. In addition to the many new pans being produced by Lodge these days, we'll be looking at some of the older vintage pans they produced over time. This is a live chat, and comments are encouraged. Come on over to RU-vid live and have some fun talking about cast iron!

I've collected a number of older Birmingham Stove & Range pans over the past several years, but unfortunately I do not have many specimens of older Lodge. So, here are some photos of the earliest Lodge skillets:

I have one piece of cast iron. A 12" Lodge skillet that I bought new in 2017. I use it nearly every day, and it has become one of my most beloved possessions. I can't consider myself a collector, seeing as I only have one piece. However, I am certainly a cast iron enthusiast. I don't know if I'll ever buy another skillet, because I feel unfaithful when I use anything other than "my Lodge". I look forward to cooking with, and enjoying it for decades to come.

Those Lodge woks are the greatest idea they ever made. I use mine all the time. And they are the easiest to season. I just make popcorn!

Thanks to what I learned in the chat last night, I looked up the MacDonald touch oven. There are pictures of it on Google. And from the shape of the lid, it certainly is suggests the MacDonald Dutch oven was made during Lodge's earliest days, likely around the same time as their arc logo days. That would mean anywhere between 1910 and the 1920s. For the record, Jamie is doing much better this morning, and she says so herself. She did have a fever last night, but it broke and she is fine today.

I recently purchased Lodge Camp Style Dutch Ovens in size #'s 8, 10, 12 & 14. Using a camp cook table with appropriate amount of charcoal briquettes under Dutch Ovens & on top of lids, I successfully cooked & baked roasted chicken, peach cobbler, & two dutch ovens of homemade wheat bread. Excellent Lodge products to own. It's also important to learn how to cook in alternative ways in case of emergency when electric, & NG or propane gas is not available.

My son's fiance's father worked for Carrier and did a big HVAC install/upgrade at the lodge factory and they gave him one of the combo units with a big chicken frier on the bottom and a pan on top that could serve as a lid or as a cooking pan.......he passed it on to my son's fiance so they could start furnishing their kitchen. .

They make awesome pieces for baking rustic bread loaves too, use the chicken fryer as a lid and the skillet "top" as the bottom. I have 2 sets for myself just for bread lol

My favorite lodge product is probably my square grill pan. It's a modern pan with rough surface. I love using it to get grill lines on sandwiches, and french toast, and Fried bologna doesn't dome up because it can't trap steam.

I keep a lot of my cast iron hanging on my garage wall. I’m in FL and since it’s quite humid, I give them a very light coat of pure mineral oil to prevent rust. Helps with storage problems inside the house tremendously!

Hello sir! Thank you for all of your great information on cast iron!! Is so helpful! I have a one notch pan that I’m not sure about as it doesn’t fit into any criteria I’ve heard you say. No number anywhere. Only an uppercase, raised M on the back 6 o’ clock position. Because it doesn’t have a number, I’m confuse. Thanks!
@castironchaos
@castironchaos 10 месяцев назад
Lodge made "single notch" pans with the notch ih the 12 o'clock position, from the 1910s through the 1920s. Some of them did not have size numbers.

Thanks for video! I have a question I can't seem to find the answer to, maybe you can help. I'm wondering what years Lodge used the "BM" mark and what the "BM" stands for? I've recently seen a few of them, and with those being my initials, I wanted to find out all I could about the pieces. THANKS!

@castironchaos
@castironchaos Год назад
Some collectorrs and antique vendors have suggested that this (U.S.) was made for the minitary, or (for some reason) for the U.S. Forestry Service. However, Lodge representatives have said that was not the case. For a few years I thought this was a 1950sot-1960s Lodge, based on the SK markings. However, several Lodge "experts" (i.e. cast iron collectors with encyclopedic knowledge of obscure vintage cast iron) have said this is actually from thje 1960s, and may be one of the first examples of Lodge putting a Made In USA mark on its pans.

I believe you will eventually reach the status of expert when it comes to cast iron. I have been learning some but don't come close to having your vast knowledge. I did help an Ebay seller more than double his profit, he had a skillet 5i made by Favorite. I had him look it up, suggested he change the description and change it from buy it now for $19.99 to auction, it sold for $46.00.

That's a Lodge three-notch #14 sized skillet. For a long time I thought it was from the 1940s to 1950s because it didn't have an SK (skillet) mark on it. I've been informed by Lodge collectors that this is likely from the 1960s, possibly one of Lodge's first examples of putting a Made In USA mark on one of their pans. There have been rumors that this pan was used by the US military, and it's even seen in eBay listings for this pan; but Lodge says no, they did not produce any special pans for the military.
