To me the best thing about this series is that in the process of portraying David Brent trying and failing miserably to adapt to the new politically correct world, it became one of the very last politically incorrect comedies. The rapid change regarding what is 'allowed' is something everyone over a certain age can relate to. And as the western world becomes more and more insanely censored, the appreciation for his character grows. It really is timeless.

David Brent is such a perfect character. Apparently one piece of advice that Ricky Gervais gave the American show was to make Michael more competent and more likable than David because they wanted the American show to last for a longer time, and if Michael was as bad as David nobody would want to root for him.
