@ash evildead The Americans and the British don't share the same sense of humour in these types of comedy. Humour is different.
@TheDannyorrell

Agreed. His character is perfect. He plays that go getter persona who never seems to reach his goals. He self sabotages in order to fit in. He is meek, easily manipulated, so desperate for respect. Yet has this border line personality disorder where he grows on us. Dwight was an aggressive person who would tread on his mother for more respect. Garreth wouldn't do that. Deep down Garreth has a big heart. English comedy is so much better than U.S comedies that use slap stick predictable punch lines. English humour is well thought out & the skilful art of comedy during the silence between the lines. For some reason Americans can't find the humour & they have to present it in varying ways. The token black guy, the gay person, more romance, quarrels, someone to hate , the dumb guy & the over the top fool

It's strange looking at the foreign versions of The Office, because, to me, the real genius of the original British version of The Office was its understated 'realness' and the downplaying of the over-the-top trying-to-make-you-laugh type of comedy acting that normally takes place in TV comedy shows. It seems like most of the other versions missed this vital point (including the American version).

If you look at what made Seinfeld so special, it was the earlier seasons where it seemed like you were watching reality, not people trying to make you laugh. The last 2 or 3 seasons it lost its magic because the characters and their experiences became less real.

Fawlty towers was the best and funnily enough only 2 series were made of that as well. Sometimes it’s better not to keep going with something so fantastically unique in comedy because it can become stale and a caricature of itself. A lot of the best comedies didn’t have long runs with the exception being only fools and horses , but even that I’d say the earlier episodes were much better.

I think an underrated piece of this amazing creation, The Office, (which as Stiller said basically gave American TV life for another 15 years and a new way of being funny) is how good Ricky and Stephen are as a duo, almost cartoonishly perfect together, that of course anything they make together will be hysterically funny, even if it's just a conversation. It’s crazy to think that the original Office has only 14 episodes. The writer’s strike season of the US version had 14 episodes. That’s one thing I really appreciate about UK television: finish on a high note instead of dragging it out to the point you have to throw in ridiculous plot elements or bad characters. Only 14 episode and almost unanimously seen as groundbreaking.

29:23. When Karl talks about only enjoying things in hindsight, Ricky and Steve rip into him. Martin says it here, and it makes sense. (Mind you Karl was on about a packet of Munchies).

Until I watched The Office I had no idea people like David Brent existed, despite living in England all my life. Most of the people Ive known have been very normal, quiet and uninteresting, so it was a genuine surprise to realise that Ricky Gervais was basing Brent on what he thought was quite a common type of character that you find in life.

The Office was so special that German Television made their own version of it; in a similar style, but with other characters. The German `office´ wasn´t called `Büro´, but was named `Stromberg´ after the main character: Bernd Stromberg, a dastardly character who always gets his comeuppance, often falls flat on his face as a kind of higher justice; and in the end, he loses his job. I have watched most of the episodes and am a fan. watching both the English original and the German counterpart bought home to me, yet again, how far German humour has improved over the decades, but also how true Gervaises conviction is, that people are basically the same everywhere

There's no dispute about which version is best. It's like saying a cover band is better than the band they're covering, it's an almost impossible concept. The Americans are way more slapstick and less subtle but I thought the first few seasons of the remake was well acted and funny. Then you just have to stop, it becomes absolutely a mess and you can tell they had no idea where to go with it. It's like remaking faulty towers and making 120 episodes ... Why oh why?

The US version can't even get the documentary camera style right. Some scenes go back and forth between a couple of cameras which ruins the illusion. Dumbed down I guess.

@oo0Spyder0oo
@oo0Spyder0oo 8 лет назад
American or of that style of humour. A generalisation I agree but, the two cultures are vastly different in that area. Let's say, a person has an American style of humour rather than actually living or coming from there if that helps. I think you get my drift.

Every now and then it all comes together perfectly - this show was one of those times. Gervais is super talented he totally nailed it 👏 - For me, the American version isn’t even close. You need that English reserve of politeness that strains itself during the scenes THAT makes it funny.

it always amazes me how somebody so inept as David Brent managed to get that managers job in the first place
@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55
@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 2 года назад
I think the assumed backstory is essentially that he actually was not incompetent or inept when the cameras were not there in the past but he dreams of basically being an entertainer, So he is essentially playing up to the camera and forgetting his job
@Ben-xl4hp
@Ben-xl4hp Год назад
@@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 the camera has allowed him to just view the job as a vehicle to getting famous, the reactions of the office staff to his jokes show this too because it’s almost as if this hasn’t been the done thing before the camera crew arrived
@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55
@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 Год назад
@@Ben-xl4hp yeah, I think so. The whole thing is extremely well thought out, so i assumed that this part was implied this way purposely. If you think about the first season, that’s when he wins the votes to get the job that Neil ends up getting, which means he must’ve been doing a good job prior to the cameras turning up. part of his resentment towards Neil is that he knows he actually got more votes to get the job , because he probably knows deep down he was doing a good job in the past.
