Because it's free and has to be funded properly. In most developed countrys around the world it is funded in a very level-playing-field sort of way. It functions perfectly, but like every system, it has it's problems. Now let's say I'm poor and I have to go to the hospital for cancer treatment. And I have to take medicines for it on a daily base. And visit a doctor weekly. How much healthcare would I get in the US? Or do you think poor people don't deserve healthcare? You think it's not a right of a citizen of a country to be offered help by it's own government (who you have to pay taxes to) when he/she is sick or wounded? Btw, we have private healthcare as well in Europe. Ofcourse it's faster and more comfortable than a public institution. Nevertheless public healthcare maintains the highest standards. I really love the US, but the healthcare being denied to sick people is absurd for the richest country in the world. You can measure a society by how it treats it's poorest citizens. Nobody deserves to be denied healthcare as a citizen of a nation.
