Great and interesting setup. I bought the 45000 years ago because it was the perfect piece of gear for me. I used it for pre-recorded loops as well, which I stored in the stereo track and still had four tracks free to record to. I also did the mono setting as you are doing in the video, with the right channel as kind of fx send. Thanks a lot sharing!

Oh my God! I finally found a channel that talks about the stuff I want to do!!!!! It made me scream like a little girl and my wife literally told me what the hell is wrong with me. Hahahahaha! I also started making my own beats after leaving church a few years ago and use a Roland Fantom G7, Korg 03R/W for my 80s/90s sounds and a Roland Integra 7. All I'm missing is a Tascam DP-24SD l, I also pre ordered a Roland SP-404MKII and hope to learn how to use it to make better beats with chopping music. I honestly tried out ableton live 11 lite with a midi controller and a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 but I just couldn't for the life of me figure out how to properly use it and stop the very bad latency issues I was experiencing. So I took that stuff back to Guitar Center and now looking at a Tascam DP-24SD. Hope to see more of your cool videos. Forgive me for the long comment. I'm just so freaking excited I found a channel that resonates with me.

8:05 thanks for talking about the FX routing. I looked up the 1604 VLZ3 and it seems very flexible. I've got a question, if you don't mind: say I have a stereo out from a synthesizer, and I want to put it through a stereo FX pedal, but I want to record the dry synth and the wet signal from the pedal, so 2 stereo channels. (I also want to be able to bring the FX in later via a fader, if you can imagine something like the Chase Bliss Habit needing about 3 minutes worth of input to "warm up".) Would it be possible to do that with this mixer? Or would I need something like a distribution amplifier which splits my synth stereo signal into 2 stereo signals, one of which goes into the FX, and then ending up using 2 stereo or 4 mono channels on the mixer? Or perhaps there's some other way, using inserts. Kind of hard to visualise and figure out without having the unit in front of me.
@MilesEllis
@MilesEllis 20 дней назад
I think you need a splitter to give you two stereo signals if you want to do dry and wet at the same time essentially But I know the fx routes on the back are pretty great

Hi Miles, Love your video. I have a dawless setup with sequencer going out to a number of synths and I am think of incorporating a looper to help build layers. It looks like the Boss 505 or the Electro Harmonix 45000 would be the 2 main ones. I wondered how you had found the 45000 in practice please? Would you recommend? Thanks very much.
@MilesEllis
@MilesEllis Год назад
Yes I would recommend the 45000 , it’s extremely easy to learn and it will work with any setup. The foot pedal that comes with it isn’t necessary unless you really want it. What kind of sequencer do you have ? I use the key step to enter notes.
@breakingwavespictures9553
@breakingwavespictures9553 Год назад
@@MilesEllis hi Miles, thanks so much. I am currently using a korg electribe 2 sampler which accesses channels 1 to 5 on MIDI of the Jupiter xm , also a tetra ( however this plays across all the channels for some reason and I haven't figured out how to get it to play on just one channel). I do have an Octatrack which can loop I know but I was thinking a separate looper would be better. I am sending clock from either electribe or Octatrack but I really like the midi clock hub that you use. Maybe this would help also? Boss 505 is the other option but I do like what you are doing with the 45000, sounds great. Thanks,
@MilesEllis
@MilesEllis Год назад
@@breakingwavespictures9553 so I was using the TR8s to send midi clock to the 45000 pedal and it would also send notes from the sequencer on the TR8s. So getting the midihub from (sixty four pixels ) is just a clock. Only sending clock data so everything would be in sync. What i do is play the key step into my rack mount synths which feed back into the 45000 pedal / I have midi in on the 45000 and TR8s. I have never had a chance to use the electribe or octatrack so I cant help much with either of those. However, if you essentially just have a dedicated clock, a dedicated step sequencer (imo) you will be able to do what you want in real time always. Hope I helped or explained a little better.
@breakingwavespictures9553
@breakingwavespictures9553 Год назад
@@MilesEllis Hi Miles, thanks for your reply. So with using a dedicated sequencer which sends out clock real time this can still be linked to the 45000? It looks like the looper would really help to layer tracks. It looks very effective the way you use it. Sorry I am just figuring this out. I think the Beatstep looks straightforward in sequencing other devices via midi. And so then wouldn’t necessarily need the extra 64p midi hub if using a dedicated sequencer? Thanks for your help.
@MilesEllis
@MilesEllis Год назад
@@breakingwavespictures9553 no worries , I like helping :) 45000 would receive both the clock and notes from said sequencer. So you need to have something solely dedicated to clock if you end up using the 45000 pedal. I have never used the boss 505 as it's just not my thing but that device is very usable too just don't know how it works with my gear setup.

I hope you are still active with this because I got a couple of questions. Is it possible to get in touch with you? One general question is: You do not use this setup to play out, correct? Like, when you say "live dawless" you mean that you record and stream live from your studio, right? I am an old G wanting to get back into playing dawless live. I really love that you use the JV-880, it is one of three old racks I use and a mainstay. You have a TR-8 so you may not appreciate the drums on the JV-880 as much as me. I use Alesis MMT-8s as my sequencer and am looking to set up a pedal combo to give my stuff some life.

yes, my email is milesellismgmt@gmail.com , i have actually played with this setup live twice at a radio station called "RecordBar Radio", you can look them up and check out my performance if you'd like. I actually love the JV-880 drums! i've sampled them many times. Shoot me over an email about which pedals and more info :) Cheers!

Hi , would you recommend behringer mixer for a synth setup? If yes what model . Thank you .
@MilesEllis
@MilesEllis 2 года назад
It depends how many channels you need. If you need 4 , get a 4 channel. However I’m not really a fan of behringer. I’ve had mixers and speakers and they were not the best. I would recommend a mackie or Yamaha mixer over behringer. Yamaha mg10xu has - 10 channels. Mackie profx 12v3 - 12 channels. Those models both come in smaller versions. I hope I am giving you a direction you can explore. :)

I have a question, which is a little off-topic...however, in relation to music. I own analog synths, use them in my own music production--and, I'm relatively aware of some very well-known instrumental electronic artists (obviously Moby, Aphex etc), but I'm always really interested in the environment for indie artists looking to break into purely instrumental electronic genres. For example, in your video you said that you make Detroit style Techno music--this is not an insult, but I'm wondering do you simply just make this for your own listening pleasure? For all I know, a lot of people know who you are and you have a big fanbase...but, I often wonder with the purely instrumental electronic genres, it would seem insanely difficult to market yourself and be known by anyone really. Firstly, off the bat, techno and others are subcultures and not really well known outside of those circles. I use a lot of synth and electronic elements in my music ideas, but there is always guitar, vocals...probably more similar to something like MGMT. Now, with that I can totally understand being able to actually get your music out to a wide audience with enough consistent work and some creativity. How does one market themselves or get their music out there when it's purely instrumental electronic music? Is there room for artists to actually sell their music/products/gain fanbase? Here's an example of why I get a bit confused with this question: let's take a look at Moby. A lot of people outside of electronic music know who Moby is (I realize he's not as inaccessible as someone like Aphex...or even just typical Detroit techno or even house music). For his time, maybe he did some cool stuff...I personally like his music...but, it's not breathtaking OMG stuff to me. He was basically doing what everyone in Hip Hop has always done--sampling things and fitting those into his own melodies and beats. Yet, his albums like Play are HUGELY successful. Nowadays, I simply cannot see someone releasing something like that and blowing up. Additionally, I have always wondered why there's only one Moby--the type of music he made is really not too difficult ESPECIALLY considering the accessbility and ease of sampling with newer digital technology...the skill level to do what he did is lower now, for sure. Yet, no Moby clones that I have ever heard. Seems odd. Further than that, it would seem much, much harder to distinguish yourself from others, especially if you're making X style of electronic (e.g., Detroit techno), because it is formulaic...very much formulaic. More formulaic than guitar-based genres in many ways. So, out of curiosity...would you be able to maybe give me some education or insight on what it's like for an indie artist making music in a genre like yours? Do you just release music for yourself entirely? Do you find it's a very difficult world to break into? How do my thoughts line up with the reality?
@MilesEllis
@MilesEllis 2 года назад
well, looking back at this video, different mindset entirely and that really will determine your outcome of music you make. Being myself is a sound alchemist at this point, don't have the full set up i would like yet but am determined to finish it so i can obtain knowledge. just play music for myself for hours. the whole idea of being famous is not what you think , don't care for it. i have my own record label, self release and promote everything myself. you make money playing shows. takes money to make money. throwing label parties is something ive been planning. just do it for the music. if people like it , then cool. some people know how to make more pleasing things for the masses. others not so much but they still have dedicated fanbases. if the music is good then it's gonna get listened too.

sidechaining?
@MilesEllis
@MilesEllis 2 года назад
I would recommend any type of compression on the main output , such as electro harmonix platform stereo compressor pedal. Sidechaining live would be critiqued by your ears , everyone’s will sound different. But if you want to sidechain specific channels I would recommend routing the compressor pedal or device to the mixers effects channel so that it can be sent to any channel.

@@MilesEllis I currently use a yamaha modx as a sidechaining device with its A/D Input and internal compressors which is overkill 🙂
