Inspiring my friend! I’ve gone back and watched this for a second time. I can tell you’ve put a ton of thought into your set up and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. I honestly believe that dawless isn’t just a trend because it makes more intentional and honest performers and performances. And I for one think that the model 12 is totally kosher, because at the end of the day it’s how a piece of gear is used. You have to be just as intentional in you decision making.
@424Recording

Your music and recordings are a testament to what you've said here, Desmond. Thanks for rewatching the video. Yeah, the Model 12 is great and a perfect hybrid mixer for analog/digital recording. It keeps you honest and makes you use your ears, but you can also go deeper if you want. Committing to what you're working on and moving on from there is where it's at and a skill I think is severely lacking among creative people nowadays! 100%!

Excellent set up. I have a Tascam 464 as well as a Yamaha MT8X, they were the first multi tracks I ever bought. I don't use them as much now as I mainly use a DAW but I still love cassette based recording and it's refreshing to see people still using these machines. Too much emphasis is put on computer based recording and using VST's and and sample packs these days.

True but if you’re 15 not best way to start! Possibly never know, that said it’s totally possible that you can do it but learning piano and lessons not a lot but enough. Can’t sight read but slowly coming along. Learned how to overlap vocals and old fashioned way of music. Point editing and mastering and some stuff would be very good for DAW but young kids end up not mastering anything and then they don’t know what to do everything I have is digital they can call it analog but it is a digital signal . So unless you’re a DJ but if you’re a true musician get great while you’re young because once you’re old all the stuff is gonna do is break your heart when you figure out he can’t play or sing or do anything just a l 2:40 esson I learned a long time ago

Great rig Mike! I'm almost DAWless, but havent let go of the Drummer plugin inside Garageband which for me is the best drum machine, particularly as I can send the midi clock to my Arturia step sequencer and keep my Minitaur in synch with Drummer. Otherwise our rigs are very similar and I am loving the tactile knob-twiddling joy of the Model 12 at the heart of the rig!

Get the DP, I bought the M12 last year but it just wasn’t right for me. It has only basic recording functions, no routing and the number of tracks quickly became limiting as I started recording couple of guitars, synths and then drums. It was a choice between the Model16 and the DP24sd. The Model16 won because the simple fact that all your value settings for the mixer channel on the DP24 (eq,pan and routings) are not visible at first glance, you would have to check the tiny screen with the jog wheel and somehow roughly remember the settings you done with your multifunctional faders in some way as you progressing on your recording, or flip through the screen for lots of check ups. It also has only 8 analogue preamps with only one dedictaed HiZ,and limited options to hook your precious outboard gear to the console. The advantage for the DP is that you theoretically have a fair chance of recalling a song and their mix position if you want to get on with another project and return to continue working of the unfinished song before, something that is near impossible without taking pictures of the Model 16 consoles fader and knob position...but... to finish a song before you start on another is not always bad. And oh....The Model 16 is MUCH prettier LOL.

@424Recording
@424Recording 3 года назад
Hi Boone, due to the limited amount of tracks, if you have two mixers, you can make a stereo mix of multiple channels to be recorded on one of the Tascams. In this setup, I've got Digitakt, Minitaur, and Nord 3p hooked up to the 424. I can send a stereo mix out from the 424 to the 12, effectively summing 5 channels to 2. You can squeeze more channels onto less by submixing like this

I remember buying a magazine called computermusic long ago. It had a free vst synth called atom. I had no idea what I was doing so I dug in. I purchased a program called micro logic and I was on my way with a digital computer set up. Never thought I would ever think of taking all my analog gear out again. I have a question I have been wondering about. Could an old laptop for guitar amp sims and ez drummer be mixed with analog and use an iPad with other apps all be used together?a hybrid set up analog,windows,Apple all living together. 🧐🤷‍♂️
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 года назад
Yeah, I think that is the way to go, Timothy. I saw an interview with Spoon in which they talked about using some digital plugins because they thought they sounded cool. I'm not sure if they record strictly analog but it seemed like a great idea, running sounds out to a computer, with the availability of digital plugins and effects, especially for gear that might be hard to get a hold of otherwise. How is the sound quality of the model 12 vs the 424? I’ve been conjurings way to expand tracks on the 424 Bc I enjoy the tape sound so much. Currently looking at acquiring an analog sub mixer(like an M-208/216/308) to hook up to the 424 and bouncing tracks into a DAW. (freeing up more tape tracks to be later bounced into a DAW for syncing) I haven’t fully acquired all the gear just yet. Is the tape sound still worth the effort? Or should I cut and just go for the model 12? Thanks!
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 года назад
That's a tough question. The sound of the 424 is definitely a unique sound but the machines have gotten out of control in terms of the price. I'd be tempted to recommend going with a 12/16/24 tbh. Unless the sound of the cassette is what you're looking for, it'd be easier to grab and use a 12 and see if you like it. You could always try one out and see if it works for you. It might be harder to do that with the 424 depending on the seller

I went from 424 cassette recording, to mixing into a 2 channel zoom recorder, then to ableton and a focusrite 18i20. Just to end up trading it in today for a tascam model 12. I miss the on the fly capturing. Are you going to miss the ableton/daw features and will you still master inside a daw? What do you think of the model 12 bit rate and Hertz? Is it of any noticable lesser quality?
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 года назад
It sounds like you've gone full circle. Tbh, I think the main features I'll miss are more composition based; the DAW has always been a great tool for that. Also, some of the plugins, perhaps, but I could always run some tracks outboard. I have a feeling by 2022, I'll have some sort of hybrid setup, but I'm also hoping to get away from the computer and screens a bit. I think that the bit rate/bit depth sounds great but I've never recorded beyond the max of the Model 12 (24/48) in a DAW. I think the biggest difference is the sound of the preamps but coming from a UA unit, which have the best out there, it's to be expected I guess. Good luck on your DAWless adventures!

@@424Recording I'm glad I won't be losing audio quality. Weird going from high biased good cassettes to an h8 zoom blew me away sound wise and now I'm worrying about tiny sound detail. I won't be completely dawless. I'll still probably buy a cheaper multi audio interface just so I have it. It's nice to have many ways to record. @@WAZA___ it's a completely different work flow. If u use a DAW chances are you know very little about sound design in production, a lot of what this guy does is colouring sounds, resynthesis, and all the old school ways of processing, but most importantly monitoring. Hey, I am working my set up around my tascam 488 and wondering if placing my monitors on each side of it (about 6-8 inches apart from the unit on each side) could potentially mess up the the tape heads somehow (magnetically?). I see your 424 up there in this video is fairly close to your monitors too. Do you know anything about this? Maybe I’m trippin’.. if you got any info I would appreciate it!!
@424Recording
@424Recording 3 года назад
I've actually stood the monitors up upright since this video thanks to people commenting about it. I guess these weren't designed to be placed sideways, so that might be something to keep in mind about yours. In terms of the magnetism, that thought has crossed my mind. So far, I can't report any changes or issues and everything has been sounding great. I think it's a good thing to consider. I'm sure it could effect the magnetism but I guess it depends how close everything is

@424Recording

I'm not sure. It actually is a drum synth and dynamically creates the sounds as opposed to playing back prerecorded samples. So I would think that any drum machine that uses synthesized sounds could be synthesized on the Nord. Anything hotter will burn it up, so I’ve always mic’d my amp and run the microphone into the inputs. I’d like to record direct.
