A gift of wood sent to me by viewer Tuffy Marginez. He found this on one of his hikes, knew what I like to turn and sent it to me! A pleasure to turn, the end result is spectacular!

WOW plus WOW !!!..Thank You Phil... I truly thought that piece was too far gone...so glad you proved me wrong !!!...Phil just beautiful !!!...I will be sending you the other half of this piece...will see what you think...You surprise me Phil, I thought with all the bark inclusions that it might not be stable enough to turn and you turned at 1000 rpm...Phil you are on a roll..Please keep them coming...This has been very entertaining !!! ....( I will keep my eyes pealed on my hikes )...tm
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
It's the wood really, Jeff. Just looking at it inspires me. Such beautiful bark and you can just see the endless possibilities in the mix of bark, wood grain and bark inclusions. This piece had it all going on! Thank you sooo much for sending it to me at just the right time. Very much appreciated! Phil

Hi Phil. Was wondering what make your chuck is? Also, do you ever have to reapply Howard's wood conditioner? Thanks. Tom

It's the SuperNova2 chuck, Tom. Most of my stuff just sets around, unused. I have never reapplied the Howard's Feed & Wax but it would be easy enough to do if necessary.

Fabulous piece of wood Phil & you were definitely the right person to create something from it. I liked it when you held it up vertically with the wide flat edge at the bottom. Why ? I hear you asking. Would make a lovely wall hanging imho. Much enjoyed seeing it evolve and as always thanks for sharing. Best regards from the U.K. Geof

Why don't you like using the scraper? Can you be specific about the Zinnzer sealer. There seem to be many different ones. What is the exact name of the sanding sealer that you use. If I can't find it, are there other brands that you recommend? Are some sealers shiny and others flat? I just started my interest in turning, but have only done it once so far. I loved it. I feel lucky that I found you in the videos. You are a great educator. Please keep your videos coming.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Pat, the scraper just doesn't cut like a gouge, can. Therefore, it doesn't leave as smooth of a finish. Still, I will use it when I'm in a situation that doesn't allow me the angle needed to get a smooth cut. I use two Zinsser products. Seal Coat is the sanding sealer and the other I use is Zinsser Shellac. Both are pre-mixed and ready to use out of the can. Seal Coat is the only sealer I've used and it leaves a shiny finish, as does the shellac. Thank you so much, Pat, for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated! Phil

@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Ya know, I bet you could turn a piece like this, you just think you can't. It's really not a lot different than a "normal" piece of wood. I think the main challenge to overcome is ensuring you have a good hold on the wood, however you can do that. If you are confident in the hold, the rest just comes naturally. FOG lol That sure made me laugh when you explained what it stood for. Reminds me of some SBO I turned a few bowls from. I picked up a few 14" diameter x 14" long Black Oak rounds while RVing. The RV park was trimming some trees and had the pieces in piles. I asked if it would be OK for me to take a few for bowl turning. I stepped on a Yellow jacket nest and was stung multi times. Lost count at 16. Once the attack was over I realized my glasses were no longer on my face and my cell phone was missing from my pouch on my hip. Luckily I found both in the weeds between the pile of wood and my car. Also found the nest I stepped on between the pile of wood and my car. After tending to the stings I returned a couple hours later for the rounds. I figured those rounds were worth more now because of the pain and suffering they caused. When I'm asked what kind of wood the bowls are made from I say Its Stinging Black Oak (SBO) Thank God I didn't have an allergic reaction.

Just a guess, Phil, but I think the lack of color in the wood and highly textured bark is making me think along the lines of the poplar family, maybe cottonwood. What region of the country did it grow in? Fill-able, Phil-able, not-able, knot-able, note-able?
@calmwoodcreations3709
@calmwoodcreations3709 5 лет назад
If it stinks like an open sewer, it's cottonwood. But is cottonwood 'heavy'? Never worked it. I was thinking willow, and you're right about that bark.

@@valeriehenschel1590 Haven't turned any, but was there when a couple old ones were felled and cut into rounds. Phil that is another master piece WOW! I would say you out did your self but no you just did what you do. What a lucky find that piece of wood was. When you first turned the lathe on it sounded like a C130 winding up. Then when I saw the chuck shining through the void on the edge of the bowl it looked like a timing light. Flashed back to the day when we had points and distributor caps. I am really loving using shellac after first seeing you use it. Also after seeing you use the Howard I love it. Hi Tracy, I must confess. Phil's show keeps me very active hiking around the hills looking for a possible future turning. For me it is so much fun to spot a piece of "Phil wood", send it off and perhaps in the months ahead I might just see that humble piece of wood having it's second adventure on Phil's lathe. Always surprised, I watch & I think to myself "Oh yea, I remember that piece! That was a fun day!" Thank You Tracy.......Tuffy

@@tuffymartinez At the beginning when he says it was sent by Tuffy, I always know it’s going to be a particularly stunning turn, I love his commitment to honouring the beauty and history of every piece and to doing just enough to turn it into something uniquely special. I don’t think there’s been a piece you’ve sent that hasn’t wowed me, so please keep up the hunt!

Like Mr Harris I really like the bottom as a wall hanging, just shows the detail you put in to the bottom of your pieces. As a whole the top looks like a volcanic valley, I see a turkey when is long ways. As always amazing work Phil, take care. Mike

I was thinking 'wall hanging' as well. I have an air plant which would look absolutely awesome on that if it had been made into a shelf. Hmmmm, I've got a similar piece of maple that I'm considering . . . . . .
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Well, as it turns out, Mike, it might just be a wall hanging. I'm running out of horizontal surfaces around here! LOL! Thank you so much, Mike, I appreciate your comment! Phil

Wise decision on that tenon. I can envision it on a granite counter top holding an assortment of fruit and nuts. Really nice piece.

Why did you use a tenon vs a recess for your chuck? Nice work as always.. Thanks
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
I just find it easier to use a tenon, Jeff. I don't feel like I'm trying to split the wood open, important in many of the irregular pieces I turn, and it's easier to remove a tenon then it is to remove a recess. I know a lot of people leave the recess and consider it finished, but I prefer to remove them. However, I have used recesses and I have left them intact, it's just that I prefer not to. Thank you, Jeff, for watching and commenting! Phil

How do you find the center balance in something like that?
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Hi Kathy! First I determine what is going to be the top side, usually this is the bark side. Then I take a dowel, the size varies depending on how big the piece is, but for this one, 1/2". Clamp the dowel in a vise and rest the piece on top of it and just move it around until it's balanced. You'll never get it perfect but you can get close. Then take a sharpie and mark around the dowel and drill your hole in the center. Hope that helps! Phil

Looked like it was a real challenge but you pulled it off. An organic look, I like! Perhaps I'll come across some similar wood (FOG) and give it a try. Honestly though, I'm not sure I'd even attempt such a thing as you've done. Really, really nice.

Thank you so much, Robert! If you do find a similar piece, I highly recommend giving it a try. Very rewarding! Phil

Paul Moore aka 'The Crazy Canadian' did a demo at a Woodworking Show in Fredricksburg, Va a few years back where he did a demo of making a bandsaw box using a piece of wood similar to yours. He said it was Ditchwood. He said he found it in a ditch next to the hotel. Yours came out much nicer than his. Nice demo on what you can do with mystery wood, which many would call junkwood or at best firewood. Thanks.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Thank you so much for your great comment, Thomas! I have made a few live edge bandsaw boxes, too, and really enjoy the process. I try not to waste any wood, if I can help it! LOL! Phil

Beautiful work Phil. You never cease to amaze me and never let me down. You are one of the most talented turners I’ve watched. I appreciate your time and videos. You have been such an inspiration to me. So much so that I am about to purchase my first lathe and start learning to turn myself. Any advice about lathes? Brand? Size? Any help would be very much appreciated.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Wow, such kind words and a wonderful comment, Kent, thank you so much! That is a big question you ask. My opinion, if you want to turn stuff like this, is you need at least a lathe with at least a 16" swing. Mine is a Jet 1840EVS. That means it has an 18" swing and you can turn a piece 40" long. The EVS stands for Electronic Variable Speed. While I have had a few lathes in my time, I would never have another one that didn't have EVS. Sooo convenient, so controllable, such a time saver. You also need reverse turning for sanding and when the occasional need to turn in reverse comes up. Mine also has a rotating, sliding headstock. I don't use those features because of where my lathe sits but I can see they would be very helpful in certain situations. Any name brand will get you a good lathe. I've always purchased used tools when I can. You can save sooo much money that way. Just be sure to check them over and put them through their paces. But, good used lathes hardly ever become available because they are in use! Hope that helps! Phil

Howdy Phil....that is fantastic balanced good ...did you use your center to balance and pushed down for the mark ? live edge looks so nice , seal it good , don't want the bark to come off any time soon . Looks like a maple burl . THe way you shined up the bark looks great ....reminded me of lava , I don't know why but it did Yes , I see a small horse head on the right above the center , looking to the right . little more looking and on the left I see a elephants head with big ears and with trunk ...the hole that goes threw is space under his head and jaw and he looks mad When you turn it around I see a were the trunk is I see a sea horse of coarse I see a bowl !
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Thank you, Bruce! No, I forgot to use my center! Dang it! Old habits die hard, I guess. I hope I can remember for next time. Turns out the wood is Modesto Ash. Some people see that horses head as a Sea Horse. Yes, lots of votes for elephant, too! And, yeah, it's a bowl! LOL! Phil
